Background: The Nobel prize winner John Maynard Keynes was one of the most influential economists during the twentieth century. His theories were based on the idea that the natural market forces should not operate by themselves; the government needs to stabilize the economy by regulating demand. According to Keynes, in an economic downturn this could be done by, for example, decreasing income tax, lower the interest rate (so that it is cheaper to loan money) and invest in infrastructure.
