A Field for All Seasons WCUSC CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Reliable Space for a Growing Program On traditional grass fields the effects of bad weather go beyond not playing that day. Heavy rain can leave standing water that shuts down activities for days. With the time sensitive nature and size of our program, we can only reschedule so much. In the past year, we were unable to schedule 25 percent of our events. This adds up to a significant amount of lost time. The develop- ment of an all-weather turf field that leverages the existing lighting and parking, gives us a year-round, extended-day facility. It began in the fall of 1976 with one field, four teams and a few people with a love for soccer. The teams played each other that fall on a field at Hillsdale Elementary School, and from this unassuming action West Chester United Soccer Club was born. Eventually, the number of teams grew and before long games involved teams from outside West Chester. As WCUSC’s popularity grew, boys and girls teams were added across all age groups in both the recreation and travel (instructional) leagues. Expan- sion saw the creation of fields at Thornbury Soccer Park, Delacy Soccer Complex, Oakbourne Park and Westtown Road. Today, WCUSC fields 56 travel teams, 180 recre- ation teams and more than a dozen adult league teams. Along the way, WCUSC has enjoyed seeing a number of its former players have successful college soccer careers; several teams win state champion- ships; and a few of its coaches and volunteers earn awards at the state, regional or national level. On the strength of both membership and achievement, WCUSC has emerged as one of the premier soccer clubs in Eastern Pennsylvania. A Quiet Birth to anImpressive Evolution

Making the Most of All Our Fields

Between its recreation, travel and adult league teams, we have 3,600

athletes in addition to those involved in camps and community-group activities. With a

year round program, we put an incredible amount of punishment on a limited number of fields. Even

with the most attentive care at least one field must be rotated out of activity for a season’s worth of

restoration — which only increases the wear and tear on the remaining nine playing fields.

If you think about all those cleats running, cut-ting and kicking across a suburban lawn, you can

appreciate the level of care and training that is required to keep our fields playable. Nothing will

benefit our grass fields more than the develop-ment of an all-weather turf field. With its durable

surface added to the mix, we can reduce the volume on our grass fields.

WCUSC, through its stated mission and the mentoring opportunities it creates, seeks to promote life lessons that can far exceed the mastery of a soccer skill:

l the responsibility that comes with being part of a team l the respect due coaches, teammates and opponentsl the graciousness of good sportsmanshipl the rewards that improvement can bring through work,

will and determination l the good fellowship that comes from belonging to a

positive groupl and the art and importance of teamwork.

The continuing growth and success of West Chester United Soccer Club (WCUSC) is beneficial to the community. Our growing membership attests to the positive experience of our soccer programs that benefit everyone from youth to adults — for those playing for exercise to those playing for a State Cup. In addition, we are proud of our as-sociation with the Special Olympics and excited about the development of an after-school program designed to bring an enriching soccer-based experience to West Chester’s diverse population.

More Soccer for More People

As an alternative to a sedentary lifestyle that leads too many of us to diabetes and obesity, we actively promote the pursuit of a life-long, healthy lifestyle.

Being involved with soccer dedicates time to fitness — practicing skills at home, team practices, camps, clinics, playing games and tournaments. Everyone can play soccer. Beyond shin guards, there is little or no cost for equipment. At the heart of the game is a ball and one or more players.

With its free-flowing style, soccer allows for more cre-ativity than perhaps any other sport. It stimulates the mind, strengthens the heart and other muscles, pro-motes greater bone density and improves respiratory function. Soccer promotes balance and coordination, agility, flexibility, physical fitness and confidence.

The newly signed, 25-year lease on our Westtown Road field combined with our need for reliable space has given rise to the most ambitious project we have ever under-taken. Appropriately named A Field For All Seasons, our $800,000 capital campaign will renovate a modest grass field into a large, state-of-the-art, all-weather turf field.

Because of this year-round training and playing facility, with a surface that drains quickly and is resistant to harsh weather and wear from heavy traffic, we can reliably bring the benefits of our soccer program to more people and our grass fields can be properly rotated and maintained.

An All-the-Time, All-Weather

Turf Field

As one of the largest and most advanced soccer clubs in Eastern Pennsylvania, we are an ambassador of the Greater West Chester area. We lead the way with innovative programs in coaching, player development and in promoting a healthier lifestyle. The reputation of our fields and programs is recognized by clubs that visit us from across the country and extends as far as the English Premier League clubs who set up clinics at WCUSC.
