Lesson Text:Luke 20:1-2
Heritage Addition church of ChristBy Jim Bradshaw
Sunday Morning, February 15, 2015
Mark 11:12-13 NKJV Now the next day,
when they had come out from Bethany, He
was hungry. (13) And seeing from afar a fig
tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps
He would find something on it. When He
came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it
was not the season for figs.
Mark 11:14 NKJV In response Jesus said
to it, "Let no one eat fruit from you ever
again." And His disciples heard it.
Mark 11:20-21 NKJV Now in the morning, as
they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up
from the roots. (21) And Peter, remembering,
said to Him, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree which
You cursed has withered away.”
Matthew 7:17-19 NKJV Even so, every good
tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad
fruit. (18) A good tree cannot bear bad fruit,
nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. (19) Every
tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down
and thrown into the fire.
2 Corinthians 5:10 NKJV (10) For we must
all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,
that each one may receive the things done in
the body, according to what he has done,
whether good or bad.
Mark 11:15-19 NKJV So they came to
Jerusalem. Then Jesus went into the temple and
began to drive out those who bought and sold
in the temple, and overturned the tables of the
money changers and the seats of those who
sold doves. (16) And He would not allow
anyone to carry wares through the temple.
Mark 11:15-19 continued (17) Then He taught,
saying to them, "Is it not written, 'MY HOUSE
SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER
FOR ALL NATIONS' ? But you have made it a
'DEN OF THIEVES.‘” (18) And the scribes and
chief priests heard it and sought how they might
destroy Him; for they feared Him, because all the
people were astonished at His teaching. (19)
When evening had come, He went out of the city.
Eph. 2:19-22 Now, therefore, you are no longer
strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the
saints and members of the household of God, (20)
having been built on the foundation of the apostles
and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief
cornerstone, (21) in whom the whole building,
being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the
Lord, (22) in whom you also are being built
together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
Eph.1:20-23 which He worked in Christ when He
raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His
right hand in the heavenly places, (21) far above all
principality and power and might and dominion,
and every name that is named, not only in this age
but also in that which is to come. (22) And He put
all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head
over all things to the church, (23) which is His
body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
Luke 20:1-2 NKJV Now it happened on one
of those days, as He taught the people in the
temple and preached the gospel, that the chief
priests and the scribes, together with the
elders, confronted Him (2) and spoke to Him,
saying, "Tell us, by what authority are You
doing these things? Or who is he who gave
You this authority?”
Luke 20:3-6 NKJV But He answered and said
to them, "I also will ask you one thing, and
answer Me: (4) The baptism of John—was it
from heaven or from men?" (5) And they
reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we
say, 'From heaven,' He will say, 'Why then did
you not believe him?' (6) But if we say,
'From men,' all the people will stone us, for
they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”
Luke 20:7-8 NKJV So they answered that
they did not know where it was from. (8)
And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell
you by what authority I do these things.”
This is a great
question.
Authority –(exousia)
literally the right
(authority) and the might
(power).
We should always ask
by what authority
are we doing
anything?
Romans 13:1 NKJV Let every soul be subject
to the governing authorities. For there is no
authority except from God, and the authorities
that exist are appointed by God.
Matthew 7:28-29 NKJV And so it was, when
Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people
were astonished at His teaching, (29) for He
taught them as one having authority, and not
as the scribes.
Matt. 9:2-6 NKJV Then behold, they brought
to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus
saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, "Son,
be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you."
(3) And at once some of the scribes said
within themselves, "This Man blasphemes!"
(4) But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said,
"Why do you think evil in your hearts?
Matt. 9:2-6 continued (5) For which is easier, to
say, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say,
'Arise and walk'? (6) But that you may know
that the Son of Man has power on earth to
forgive sins"--then He said to the paralytic,
"Arise, take up your bed, and go to your
house.”
Matthew 12:28 NKJV But if I cast out
demons by the Spirit of God, surely the
kingdom of God has come upon you.
Matthew 12:32 NKJV Anyone who speaks a
word against the Son of Man, it will be
forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the
Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either
in this age or in the age to come.
John 14:9-11 NKJV Jesus said to him, "Have I
been with you so long, and yet you have not
known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen
the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the
Father'? (10) Do you not believe that I am in the
Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I
speak to you I do not speak on My own authority;
but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.
(11) Believe Me that I am in the Father and the
Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of
the works themselves.
Philippians 2:6-11 who, being in the form of
God, did not consider it robbery to be equal
with God, (7) but made Himself of no
reputation, taking the form of a bondservant,
and coming in the likeness of men. (8) And
being found in appearance as a man, He
humbled Himself and became obedient to the
point of death, even the death of the cross.
Philippians 2:6-11 continued (9) Therefore God
also has highly exalted Him and given Him
the name which is above every name, (10)
that at the name of Jesus every knee should
bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth,
and of those under the earth, (11) and that
every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ
is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV And Jesus came
and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has
been given to Me in heaven and on earth. (19)
Go therefore and make disciples of all the
nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
(20) teaching them to observe all things that I
have commanded you; and lo, I am with you
always, even to the end of the age." Amen.
