6 Long-Range Goals, Short-Term Obstacles
COVID Hashtag #inittogether Says It All
Like all of Houston, CCSC was more accustomed to
hurricanes than public health emergencies, but our skills
rapidly transferred to COVID-19 and our supporters
were right there with us—#inittogether.
Here are some of the many
ways, with your help,
that CCSC is meeting the
challenge of COVID-19 and
its subsequent three-fold
increase in those seeking
aid from our Emergency
Services programs.
CCSC’s suppliers cannot
provide all the food that
CCSC needs, but our
supporters have come
through time and again with
donations to keep our pantry
shelves stocked. Churches
are having drive-thru food
drives; Trader Joe’s donated grocery bags; H-E-B brought
fresh bread to the pantries; and many, many individuals are
dropping off food, diapers and hygiene items.
“We are receiving some products from our distributors, but it
is our churches and supporters who are the heroes,” said Karen
Holloman, program director – Basic Needs/Children. “They
are the ones that are keeping us going.”
In the early days of the
COVID crisis, food
wasn’t CCSC’s only
need. To maintain safety
standards we needed
sanitizers—items that
were near impossible
to obtain. In stepped
our Finance Director
Judie Kochenower,
who somehow found
the ingredients to
make hand sanitizer.
Her ingenuity kept us going until Texas Tail Distillery turned
its operations to sanitizers and donated gallons to CCSC.
Then it was up to CCSC’s ever flexible volunteers. When the
call was made to minimize risk by having JobNet go online and
Martha’s way suspend classes, volunteers and staff got creative
using Zoom to hold virtual coaching and workshop sessions
while also offering clients one-
on-one phone help.
In the food pantries, to minimize
risk for everyone, food packers
started coming in early to
load groceries into bags before
leaving it to a smaller group
to hand out the food (while
maintaining safe distance),
conduct financial interviews,
and answer the phones.
Our volunteer teams are truly making it happen, and they
are doing so, as always, with smiling faces, kind words and
respect. Everyone pulling together means that clients like Dora
Perez, a mother of three, can come to CCSC and get food for
their families.
“I’m happy and thankful that CCSC is here to help us out at
this time,” Perez said. “It’s a blessing that CCSC’s programs are
here and available to me.”
It is a blessing for CCSC to be able to help Dora Perez and
thousands of others. We are able to do so through the grace
and generosity of all our friends, supporters and volunteers.
Thank you for being #inittogether with CCSC.
Dora Perez practices social distancing as she waits to be served outside CCSC’s Emergency Services–Southwest food pantry.

Capital Campaign UpdateCCSC appreciates your support of the A Time To Build Capital Campaign. We are edging closer to our goal of $14 million.
For more information about the campaign, or information about ways you can contribute, please visit our website
www.ccschouston.org or contact Sharon Current at [email protected].
Due to COVID-19, CCSC had to cancel its
annual Azalea Gala. We are disappointed
to not be able to celebrate the passion and
commitment Reverend Larry Hall has had for
CCSC. For 39 of our 40 years, he has worked
and advocated for our Christ-based mission.
I want to lift up the Chairs of the event,
Candy and Tom Knudson and Dana and Don
Miller. Their dedication and commitment to
excellence has been inspiring, and their legacy to CCSC has been to introduce more people to our mission and help
us to take the event to the next level. We at CCSC love Larry, Candy, Tom, Dana and Don!

MISSION STATEMENTThe mission of Christian Community Service Center (CCSC) is to serve the poor,
hungry, disabled and otherwise needy while respecting their religious, ethnic or
cultural differences. CCSC was created out of faith and founded in the belief that
we are called to help all God’s children heart to heart and hand in hand.
Michelle ShonbeckMichelle Shonbeck
Dear CCSC Friend,
As I write this column, we are in the midst of global chaos with
COVID-19 and its ripple effects impacting the economy. Here
in Houston, we are being hit especially hard with the decline in
the price of oil. It all looks bad.
My column, though, is about hope. Mr. Rogers famously said
that when things look bad, look for the helpers. We, the CCSC
Community, are the helpers.
We are living in a time when the demand for our help is
increasing exponentially. We have people calling because
their hours have been cut or they are facing a layoff.
If you’re a family of four living on $45,000/year, you
most likely don’t have assets to wait this out. You need
income now.
Today, a single mother of two children, who has been impacted
by COVID, called on CCSC for the first time. She simply
needed food for her children. Yesterday, a job seeker called
JobNet. We had helped him to find a job 15 years ago, and he
remembered the personalized care we gave him then. He needs
our help again.
Please help us to do our part to strengthen the Houston
economy by feeding the hungry, helping people to find jobs,
and providing a bridge through this time. We need your
financial support to increase our services and hope we are at
the top of your list for charitable giving.
Finally, I said in the first paragraph that things look bad. They
do. But God is bigger than this moment in history. In my time
at CCSC, we have persevered through many disasters: Tropical
Storm Allison, the fall of Enron, September 11, Hurricanes
Katrina, Rita and Ike, the Great Recession and others. All of it
was difficult, but I see God’s hand in all the great work done for
people who suffered and found relief within our doors.
May we see God’s hand again as we navigate through this crisis.
In Christ,
Michelle Shonbeck, Executive Director
Azalea 2020 Canceled
It absolutely takes a village, a community—and CCSC is
fortunate to have all of you in its community.
From all the folks who donate food, funds, paper bags
and hand sanitizer, to the volunteers who pack those
items up and hand them (and smiles) out to our clients;
to all who interview, answer phones and questions, and
help clients find jobs; to those who share our Facebook
and Twitter posts and cheer us on—THANK YOU.
Each of you is making it possible for CCSC to keep
helping those who need help, and will continue to
need help, in the months to come. YOU are Christian
Community Service Center, and every day YOU are
making a difference.

THANK YOU TO IN-KIND DONORSA donation of goods or services is an excellent way to help Christian Community Service Center achieve its mission. Here is a list of CCSC’s recent in-kind contributors. (If we missed your group, please let us know so we can recognize you in the next newsletter.)
A special thank you to all churches and organizations that provide CCSC with gifts from organized food or hygiene drives on a regular basis.

During the first quarter of
2020, Emergency Services–
Central volunteers met the
challenge of an anonymous
donor who pledged a dollar-
for-dollar matching gift
if the volunteers achieved
100% participation for the
A Time To Build Capital
Campaign. The volunteers’
contributions combined with the matching gift totaled nearly
$100,000. Many thanks to our most generous donor, and
congratulations to ES-C volunteers for their service and
fundraising achievement.
Does Your Company or Former Company Match Volunteer Hour Donations?
Many companies offer employees, retirees, and sometimes employee or retiree spouses, a matching-gift benefit that can double or even triple your donation to a qualifying charitable organization like CCSC. Some will even make a matching contribution for your volunteer hours! Each company has its own method for you to submit a matching-gift request. Check with the Human Resources department to find out how you can maximize your donations to CCSC.
ES–Central volunteers hit 100% participation for challenge grant.

“Carol” is a registered nurse who first visited CCSC in
November 2018. She asked for help from Emergency Services
for the second time this year. Like many of our clients, Carol
balances responsibilities and is typically self-sufficient, but she
had no back-up savings for when her transportation to work
fell through and she lost her job at a senior care facility. Carol
was unable to pay her light bill and CCSC helped. The great
EMERGENCY SERVICES–SOUTHWESTnews is that Carol has secured a new position.
The Emergency Services program is grateful to have the
resources to invest in people like Carol when they experience
the unforeseen. By offering financial assistance, nutritious
grocery packages, and referrals to resources that can help
stretch budgets, CCSC increases a client’s chance for stability.
In the midst of COVID-19, JobNet is offering virtual coaching
and workshops online and emailing job postings to clients.
JobNet is supporting job seekers as they continue to look
JOBNETfor work, build their skills, and find ways to meet their
needs. Individuals are encouraged to call 713-626-8390 for
assistance.
MARTHA’S WAYMartha’s Way continues to stay in contact with its clients
providing resources to help cope with reduced hours and
income in the midst of COVID-19. We are eager to restart
classes as soon as possible, including a new class at St. Paul’s
United Methodist Church and a new advanced seminar for
graduates. Those interested in hiring a Martha’s Way graduate
can contact Ana Tappan at [email protected].
Volunteer Rebekah Rivera stocks ES–Central shelves.
Change—there’s been more than enough of it for everyone
lately. Thankfully, Emergency Services–Central volunteers are
incredibly adept at being adaptable. They just keep smiling,
laughing, and rolling with whatever comes their way. CCSC
needs you to come in early to pack groceries before your
normal shift. No worries. You need to wash hands, wear gloves
and sanitize everything. No problem. You need to meet the
needs of three times the normal number of clients. Got it. Yup,
you’ve got it, and we, THANKFULLY, have you.

Atherton Elementary School students receive Back To School supplies.
YOUTH SERVICES–BACK TO SCHOOL Every year, CCSC’s Back To School program provides brand
new school supplies and uniform vouchers to 6,500 low-
income Prekindergarten through 12th grade students. CCSC’s
Board of Directors approved increasing the supply packet for
the students so the program can provide more academic
items. Our new “adopt a student” sponsorship amount will
now be $50.
If you would like to help a student in need, please visit www.

With the ongoing support of generous donors, including
individuals, churches and foundations, CCSC continues to
meet the greatest needs for Houstonians affected by the
economic impact of COVID-19. Staff and volunteers work
diligently and tirelessly to put the donations to work—helping
to feed families with nutritious food, providing critically
needed financial assistance, and raising the hopes and skills of
job seekers.
In the middle of a crisis it’s often hard to focus on the long-
term, but CCSC has been reassured by two key lessons learned
over the course of the last few months: CCSC is needed now
more than ever, and CCSC is poised for the future with its
new building that will enable us to serve more and serve better.
Knowing that the countdown has begun for the completion of
the new building, and knowing the expanded capabilities and
Generosity for the Greatest Need
CCSC WISH LISTS
space of the new building, provides a positive outlook as CCSC
faces the current challenges of the COVID-19 crisis.
As entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker Jim Rohn
said, “We all need lots of powerful long-range goals to help us
past the short-term obstacles.”
CCSC is looking ahead while serving on the frontline. Critically
important are food donations and monetary contributions to
help meet the greatest needs for our clients and also to help
finish the A Time to Build Capital Campaign. We are $1.3
million away from reaching our goal of $14 million and
securing CCSC’s future as the church’s response to poverty for
the long term.
