ØIn some instances for individual awards where there were limited entries, judges combined across divisions or categories, or across the two contests: Previously Published or On Deadline.

ØAdvisers: OSM will email you ready-to-print copies of all award certificates for your students, along with your scorebooks and judges’ letters for critical service.

OSM’s mission is to advocate for and provide education, training and assistance to scholastic media advisers and students across Oklahoma. ON DEADLINE CONTESTContest description: This individual category contest requires students to quickly turn around entries based on prompts OSM sends a few weeks before

Spring Media Monday. For this contest, all divisions are judged together.

Special Note: This year, students, and the teachers who guided them, deserve an extra shout out, as On Deadline work was accomplished under quarantine,

via distance learning. OSM and our judges were impressed at what students accomplished under extraordinary circumstances.

“OF THE YEAR” AWARDS—STILL TO BE ANNOUNCED*

”Of the Year” student awards consider a student’s body of work for the academic year in one of four categories: Writer of the Year, the Laura Schaub Designer of the Year,

Photographer of the Year, and the Karen Beavers Editor of the Year. All divisions and publication types are judged together

Additionally, we award the Lois A. Thomas Newspaper Adviser of the Year, named for Thomas, a retired journalism teacher and publications adviser at Putnam City High School in Oklahoma City. This

award recognizes excellence in scholastic media advising and service to the field.

*Important Note: Due likely to the COVID-19 situation and the closing down of schools during our entry-process, we did not receive enough entries to proceed with this section of the contest. We will

be contacting teachers to solicit more entries and plan to announce winners as soon as possible.

SPECIAL AWARDSSTILL TO BE ANNOUNCED*

Based on donations of $1,000 or more from OSM’s 2017 or 2018 fundraiser, additional awards were added. Descriptions for two of these awards follow:

The Oklahoma-based nonprofit organization Visionary Oklahoma Women has a mission to “foster creativity that enhances global prosperity.” Collectively, the women of VOW sponsor the Visionary Oklahoma Women Award of Journalistic &

Creative Excellence for the student journalist who best showcased coverage of women’s issues and/or empowerment of women through creative journalistic work.

Dr. Michael Cookson is the chairman of and a professor for the Department of Urology at the University of Oklahoma Heath Science Center. Before going to medical school, Cookson earned a journalism degree at OU. He sponsors the Michael

Cookson Award for Journalism Coverage of Healthcare & Medicine.
