A Publication of the Thomas M. Wernert Center For Mental Health Recovery and Support March—April 2015 This Year’s Heart & Soul event had over 300 people in attendance. The Heart & Soul Planning Committee were pleased to have Patrick and Sharon Czarny serve as Honorary Co-Chairs. Patrick and Sharon have a son who lives with mental illness. Patrick shared a heart felt story about his son and how well the family are doing now, as a result of the treatment and support received within the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Lucas County (MHRSBLC) system of care. It was very gratifying to hear a success story like this. That is what the mission of Heart and Soul is all about; to raise awareness for mental illness and help erase the stigma associated with it, while raising funds to help ensure recovery successes in our com- munity continue. Thank you to the generous sponsors, including MHRSBLC providers the Zepf Center, Unison Be- havioral Health Group, and Rescue Inc., those who donated items for the silent & live auctions, the enthu- siastic volunteers, community friends who attended and purchased items from the auctions, Patrick and Sharon Czarny, and Co-Founders of Heart and Soul, Tony Rasczyk and Sally Binard. This event would not have been the success it was, if it wasn’t for everyone’s support. Net proceeds of nearly $30,000 will bene- fit the Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital and the Wernert Center. 11th Annual Caring for Our Community Honorary Co-Chairs, Sharon and Patrick Czarny, whose ongoing support throughout the year is much appreciated by TMWC members and staff. Mental Health and Wernert Center Community Lose Long Time Friend and Advocate by Katie Phillips
Sadly, Thomas M. Wernert Center Board of Trustee, and 15 year member, Wayne Coleman, age 66, passed away on January 8, 2015. Wayne had been an active participant in peer support and peer leadership in our community for over a decade. Wayne was a great advocate for people living with mental illness, and served on the Recovery Council of the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Lu- cas County. He most recently held the position of vice president of the Thomas M. Wernert Center, but was also past president. Wayne was a charter member and past president of New Horizons, and was a member of NPI Tenant Association. Thoughts shared on Wayne:
“[When] I went to the funeral home I was impressed with the number of people in attendance. You could tell he touched a lot of people. His son Jeff, too, was impressed with all of the things Wayne had accom- plished.” Scott Sylack, Executive Director, MHRSB of Lucas County
“I’ve known Wayne since at least 2000. He was a very kind man, passionate advocate, relentless volun- teer, and true leader of his peers. He will be missed.” Kelly Skinner, Executive Director TMWC
“I have known Wayne for many years and he always had a smile on his face and a joke to tell. He was just as at home with his peers as he was with his fellow advocates.” Katie Phillips, PEP Coordinator.
No one ever really dies as long as they took the time to leave us with fond memories.

This is one of three tables of items creat- ed by TMWC staff & members. Julie Foley designed and packed these lovely gift bas- kets—great job, Julie!
This year we intro- duced jewelry de- signs. The multi- piece at left was all made by Nancy Fox & display design by Katie Phillips. Nancy also donated crocheted items— she’s crafty!
A very special thanks to our gifted artists and creators. We sold abso- lutely everything on all of our tables!
What a blast we had designing and creating items for the Wernert Center’s silent auction table at the 11th Annual Heart
& Soul event. It was a wonderful evening and as always well attended and well supported. Thank you Toledo!

National Nutrition Month by Lisa Stewart, TMWC Wellness Specialist
March is recognized as National Nutrition month. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics created this campaign to educate the public on eating well and making healthy lifestyle choices. This year’s theme is named “Bite Into a Healthy Life- style”, with the focus being on eating fewer calories, making educated food choices, and increasing physical activity to promote healthier lives. To learn more about how to make informed food choices and how to increase exercise, please join me on Tuesdays at 12pm for the Get Fit Club, Wednesdays for
Let’s Move at 12pm and Fridays at 10:30am for Yoga. Don’t forget to see Katie on Thursdays for Dia- betes Support.
