Festivals/Events: Parade of Lights

The Mesquite annual Parade of Lights is a jolly night of giving, sharing and caring. The parade, created in 2015, celebrates the Christmas holiday season twofold: bringing the community together to enjoy the lights and giving to those who are less fortunate.

The parade begins on December 5 at 5:30 p.m. on Mesquite Blvd, southside lanes, heading east from Arrowhead Lane.

The event has grown to become Mesquite’s largest canned-food drive each year. Starting with just 1,000 pounds in 2015, the efforts of the community and businesses have increased that to 7,010 pounds of food in 2018 to split between the Virgin Valley Food Bank and the Salvation Army.

This year, the goal is to exceed 10,000 pounds of food. In addition to collecting food along the parade route, donation boxes are set up at Mesquite Fire Station 3 located at 3 John Deere Drive, the Mesquite Recreation Center at 100 W. Old Mill Rd, Mesquite Senior Center at 102 W. Old Mill Rd, Sun City Mesquite Recreation Center at 1300 Flat Top Mesa, Mesquite Police Department at 695 Mayan Circle, and Mesquite City Hall at 10 E. Mesquite Blvd., during normal business hours.

Local groups, schools, organizations and businesses are encouraged to participate in this event. The entry fee is 15 pounds of food.

Many changes have been made for this year’s theme, Parade of Music. In addition to competing for Best Theme, Best Lights and Most Participants, there will also be awards for Mayor’s Choice, People’s Choice, and for most canned foods collected. Winners will be announced at the awards dinner on December 12, and will be available via the Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/mesquiteparadeoflights.

Recipe Corner: Classic Eggnog

INGREDIENTS

2 c. milk1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon, plus more for garnish1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg1/2 tsp. vanilla extract6 large egg yolks1/2 c. granulated sugar1 c. heavy cream1/3 c. bourbon or rum (optional)Whipped cream, for serving

DIRECTIONS

In a small saucepan over low heat, com-bine milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and va-nilla and slowly bring mixture to a low boil.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, whisk egg yolks with sugar until yolks are pale in color. Slowly add hot milk mixture to egg yolks in batches to temper the eggs and whisk until combined.

Return mixture to saucepan and cook over medium heat until slightly thick (and coats the back of a spoon) but does not boil. (If using a candy thermometer, mixture should reach 160º.)

Remove from heat and stir in heavy cream and, if using, alcohol.

Refrigerate until chilled.

When ready to serve, garnish with whipped cream and cinnamon.

In the Spotlight: Mary Tillman

A Sun City resident since 2018, Mary Tillman moved from her na-tive state of Ohio where she worked at the Ohio Department of Taxation for 33 years. For the first part of her career, she was a tax auditor and later ran the Offer and Compromise Program for the department. As Mary explains it, that’s the program for people who owe taxes but can’t afford to pay everything, so the de-partment and the taxpayer “nego-tiate” and compromise on the total due.

Although she was born in Toledo, OH, she moved around Ohio a bit and included Springfield and Columbus in her residences. She graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in Business Administration. As might be expected, she’s a Buckeye fan, belongs to the Sun City Buckeye Club and attended the Rose Bowl game last year because the Buckeyes were playing. Mark off one item on her “bucket list.” She’s also a member of the Euchre Club and enjoys Mexican Train (dominoes). She can be often seen around the Pioneer Center, volunteering with the many activities be-ing organized by Shawn and Deborah. If you play Bingo, you’ve probably seen her. In the future, she would like to be guardian ad litem in Mesquite like she was in Ohio but having to go to Las Vegas with its traffic and other problems has been a deterrent to her. The location for the training is in a “bad” area where homelessness and drug users are in abundance. For those who don’t know, a court-appointed guardian ad litem helps children who have been removed from their home and finds a suitable placement for the child. Sometimes that placement is returning the child to his/her home if it’s safe to do so.

For a relative newcomer to Sun City, Mary has become an active support-er of the community. Look for her at the Pioneer Center.

Pyracantha’s white flowers delight gardeners in spring, and its thick clusters of pea-size, orange-red berries light up the garden in the fall and winter. Polli-nators are attracted to the dense clusters of white spring flowers, and birds love the edible berries.

This evergreen has oval, glossy dark green leaves that cover the stiff, thorny stems, hence the common name, firethorn. Pyracantha (“from Greek pyr fire and akanthos thorn” hence firethorn) is a genus of large, thorny evergreen shrubs in the family Rosaceae. Roses are also a member of this family.

These fast growers can be used as shrubs, hedges or trained on a trellis. Once established, pyracantha is tough, able to withstand drought, hot winds, poor soil and full sun.

Pyracantha can be planted anytime. Dig a hole three to five times the root ball’s diameter, but only to the depth of the root ball. Incorporate organic matter in the backfill soil and refill the hole using water to settle the soil. Build a water basin and soak the root ball and surrounding area. Use mulch to conserve water and cool the soil during the heat of summer.

Two serious problems are a bacterial disease called fireblight, which can kill the plant, and pyracantha scab, caused by the fungus Spilocaea pyracanthae. It affects the brilliantly-colored orange-red fruits as well as the leaves and stems. Both diseases are most likely to occur when spring and summer weather is cool and moist. The only effective treat-ment for plants already infected is to prune off the affected branches, clear all fallen leaves from around the plants and remove them from the area. Consult with your local nursery for preventative measures or, for best success, choose disease-resistant varieties.

Hi everyone!

Covenant Corner: Children, Plants, Lights and Speeding As the holiday season approaches there may be visits by your extended family. Often this includes children of all ages. Sun City welcomes these children but has several rules. First, there is a charge for any child under 19 years old and their accompanying parent/adult for two dollars each. Pool hours for the children are from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and they must be at least 42 inches tall to use the pool. Children thirteen years or older are permitted to use the sports courts, bocce, table tennis, billiards and the putting green. They must be accompanied at all times by the homeowner. No one under 19 years of age is allowed to use the spas, fitness room or movement studio.

Due to our current view fence painting project, it has been noted that some homeowners have allowed plant/tree growth not only through the view fence but into their neighbors’ yards. Be a good neighbor and trim these plants/trees back.

The ARC does require that additional lighting, such as under or around your patio, be submitted and approved by the committee. Remember, lighting must be limited to your yard only. Do not forget that lights must be off by 10 p.m. or be placed on a motion sensor. Holiday/Christmas lights may be displayed one month before the holiday and must be removed no later than one month after that holiday.

Our neighborhood streets are limited to 25 mph and stop signs do mean STOP. The only streets with the 35 mph limit are Falcon Ridge and Flat Top Mesa. The Mesquite Police Department has been asked to assist with this problem so be aware of your speed and please make a full stop!

Happy Holidays!

Did you know that there is a place in Mesquite (and other places in Clark County) whose main goal is to end domestic violence homicide in Clark County? SafeNest (safenest.org) is located at 450 Hillside Drive Building A, in Mesquite (adjacent to Smith’s Grocery). SafeNest mission statement is to end domestic violence in Clark County by providing comprehensive services designed to break the cycle of violence – from Prevention to Protection and Empowerment. According to SafeNest Mesquite Coun-selor Glen Horlacher (MS, MFT), Domestic Violence is defined as a pattern of abusive behaviors used by one partner to maintain POWER and CONTROL over another partner. Unlike other violent crimes, the perpetrator and victim are not strangers. They are usually intimate partners, family members or parents of common children. The SafeNest office in Mesquite is a satellite location for a large agency in Las Vegas. SafeNest has been in operation since 1977 and the Mesquite office since 1997.

As the sole counselor for the Mesquite SafeNest, Mr. Horlacher provides counseling services for persons with depression, alcohol issues, persons with drug addiction, troubled youth, and anyone who needs help with mental issues. Mr. Horlacher conducts group counseling sessions on various topics

The Front Porch Flowers & Gifts Shop opened as a unique floral design and one-of-a-kind gifts service in Overton, Nevada in 2012. Frequent visits and calls from Mesquite residents prompted a much-desired expansion of their business to Mesquite on February 1, 2019. This creative shop is staffed with a team of talented designers who provide traditional floral arrange-ments or can design your own request for any special occasion. Ninety percent of this dedicated staff has been with Charlene, the owner, from the shop’s opening day in Overton in 2012. Their unique gift items are selected specifically for this shop. Charlene advises if you see something you like, grab it and make it your own, because you may not find it elsewhere. In addition to flowers and gifts, the shop offers a variety of rental items to help in planning and set up for special occasions. Classes are offered in floral design and can accommodate up to ten participants. With Christmas ap-proaching, you can call and order that special floral arrangement for your home or reserve a spot in class and create your own. The holidays will soon be upon us in full force, with decorations and goodies on display to celebrate with our friends and family. Let’s keep in mind all members of the household, as some holiday tradi-tions may be hazardous to our pets.

While poinsettias and holly berries are not poisonous, these plants are toxic enough to make your pet sick. To be on the safe side, make sure these yuletide plants are kept out of reach. However, mistletoe is a different story: if a large amount is ingested, your animal could experience seizures and possibly even death. Better to use the fake stuff if you absolutely need assistance in getting kissed.

If you’re putting up a Christmas tree, make sure it’s on a flat, wide base to keep it solid. Secure it to the wall if you have a cat, as they see a tree as a personal invitation to climb. Breakables, tinsel, ornament hooks, and electrical cords should be well out of paw’s reach. If it’s a live tree, keep your pet away from its stand as drinking the water will make them sick. Whether it’s a live or artificial tree, the needles are indigestible.

It is so tempting to give treats to our pets from off our plates because we love them like family. Many foods, however, are harmful or may even be fatal to your pet. These include: alcoholic beverages, choc-olate, coffee, yeast dough, raisins, currants, grapes, Macadamia nuts, onions, chives, garlic, and large amounts of poultry. Also, be sure the turkey carcass is well out of reach, as animals can easily choke on

these bones.

Tis the season to be jolly, so let’s keep it that way! With some proper planning, you can prevent unnecessary pet medical emergencies during the holidays
