Under fair skies,
our Spring Puppy Match was
a great success. Our Match Chair, Mark
LaBonte and his fabulous line-up of
volunteers had every base covered. There was a lovely entry of very good
youngsters and all should do quite well in
the conformation ring. Thanks to Bill
McGinnis who was our Conformation
Judge and to Leslie Kelly for judging
Costume Parade. Hats off to Ken Britton for organizing the
Lure Coursing event. The dogs that ran the
course had a blast and spectators enjoyed
watching our Scotties displaying one of
their natural instincts.
We welcomed "Fergus" the STCC's new
mascot to the match and thank Chloe
Britton for bringing him along. Raffles
and booth seemingly did very well. Food
was delicious and everyone had a fabulous

L. to R.: Judge William McGinnis, Al Jennings and Mark LaBonte
The STCC held its bi-annual AKC
sanctioned “B” match on Sunday, March
20, 2016 at Palm View Park in West
Covina and we had a beautiful spring day.
Temperatures were moderate so puppies
were out there having a blast!
We had a great turnout with 15 puppies
entered in conformation competition, 3
entries in the Parade of Champions and
Rupert (owned by Dennis and Pamela
Pesek), our one entry in the Costume
Parade.
William McGinnis, the Judge for the
competition, did a spectacular job going
over the puppies, offering some guidance
to those having some presentation
challenges and overall making sure the
dogs were having fun. By the sound of his
laughter, I think he may have enjoyed
himself as well.
Leslie Kelly, our Costume Judge did a
great job and we really appreciated her
accepting the volunteer assignment and
helping the club.
Rod Ott was in charge of the Handling
Class and did a superb job guiding the wee
ones in their first go rounds the ring.
We offered Lure Coursing as an added
activity for the match and it was a
smashing success. Big thank you to Chloe
and Ken Britton for bringing the
equipment, and coordinating and handling
the activity. Exhibitors, members and
anyone towing a Scotty seemed to be
participating and many were going back to
the entry table for multiple entries. It was
fun to watch and great to see the dogs
expending energy and having a good time
along with their owners.

Colton, CA To Consider
Mandatory Spay/Neuter
April 19
The AKC has just learned that the Colton
City Council will consider an ordinance
(p. 315-353) to require the sterilization of
all dogs and cats within the city limits
with only vague, limited exemptions and
establish a limit of ten (10) dogs per
single family dwelling unit.

You've been reading about our sweet little
two-year-old, Kylie, for the last few
months.
She was bailed out of a San Bernardino
County shelter right before Christmas to be
the Scottie companion to a long-time
Scottie owner
and her resident
Scottie Alistair.
The first four or
five days went
well between the
two, then Kylie
started
a seemingly
unprovoked
fight when
Alistair walked
by her as she lay
in her dog bed.
Kylie's new
mom called me immediately and we
agreed to take her, however, she wanted to
wait awhile and see if things could be
worked out. "I really like her," she
said. Two days later Kylie again picked a
fight so I drove to Apple Valley to pick her
up in January.
I decided to adopt her as an "only
dog," however it became quickly apparent
during our first neighborhood walk that
Kylie had very serious leash-aggression
issues. Some trainers refer to this as leash-
reactive aggression.
The minute Kylie would spot another dog
being walked, or a cat sitting on a porch,
she would go ballistic with barking and
thrashing around while I would as quickly
as possible turn and head in the opposite
direction, and usually it ended with me
picking her up. One real positive about
Kylie though, is that she absolutely loves
people and wants everyone she meets to
pet her on our daily walks.
Kylie has spent several weeks with a very
knowledgeable aggression-issues trainer
with several follow-ups in socialization
classes.
One day soon Kylie will become some
lucky families' great Scottie
companion. She already is fun to live with
as a happy, very playful, housebroken, lap-
I asked her if Ruby was good on a leash
when she encountered other dogs on walks
and she said "yes, but she won't do well if
another dog comes in her yard or her home
for a visit," she emphasized.
We were able to take Ruby in late March,
soon after we heard her tragic story, and
she now lives in Orange County with her
semi-retired new dad, who works part time
at nearby Disneyland. This is his first
Scottie, however he is terrier-experienced,
having recently lost a 13-year-old Irish
Terrier, who had gone through many
months of working with a trainer in her
early years, as she was also dog-
aggressive, as is Ruby.
I thought it was interesting when I asked if
Ruby was a purebred Scottie, as I always
do, to be told ...no. "Nine
years ago their daughter
was a teenager still living
at home. She found an ad
online for puppies who
had a Scottie mother and a
Westie father in the
Bakersfield area, and the
ad included photos of the
puppies. They called the breeder who said
there were only two left and they were off
to get Ruby the very next day," she
laughed as she told me. Ruby could have
fooled me if she'd have been in a shelter. I
would have bailed her out. She looks very
Scottie to me. See what you think! "Ruby
is settling in very well and really likes her
walks and meals," was the good news in a
recent phone call from her new dad. "She
doesn't seem to mind other dogs when we
see them but I still cross the street when I
spot one," he laughed, adding, "just to be
safe!"

sitting little girl, who is well on her way to
normal peaceful daily walks The trainer
did say that she strongly agreed with my
plan to adopt her as an "only dog,"
remarking that "she is a 'hoot' and really
fun to be around ... even if she thinks she is
an 80 pound Rottweiler."
We were scheduled to get two females in
this past month and, oddly, they are both
middle-aged and have the same name ...
Ruby ... not really a common Scottie name.
Last month we mentioned "Ruby #1,"
whose owner's work schedule now
requires a lot of travel that consequently
ends up with Ruby "sitting lonely in a
boarding kennel," her owner sadly
explained in a phone call. We had an
adoptive home arranged but at the eleventh
hour, when we were scheduled to pick her
up that very day, Ruby's mom called and
said she wanted to see if she could figure
out a way to have a friend or relative
babysit her during some if not all of her
work travels. "I really love Ruby and want
to see if there is any way I can work things
out to keep her."
Ruby #2 is a very sweet nine-year-old
whose life took a sudden tragic turn in late
February when her life-long owner was
killed in a horrific freeway accident. You
may remember reading about it or seeing it
on TV, as the story got a lot of coverage
for a week or more and still occasionally
gets mentioned,
as several police
departments and
the California
Highway Patrol
are still very
actively
searching for
one of the two
alleged street
racers that
caused this
tragic
accident. The
other, a now former cameraman for
TV's Dancing With The Stars, is in jail
facing three murder charges.
