Humane Society Business Hours:
Presidents Messageby George Vandenberg
Now that the sun has chased the snow away for another year, the Sarnia & District Humane Society is experiencing what all of nature is currently experiencing: growth, renewal and change.
Our staff and volunteers continue to grow to meet the challenges set out before them under the guidance of our new Shelter Manager Donna Pyette. Donna has demonstrated a continued ability to go above and beyond the call of duty as does all of our shelter staff. Working at the shelter is not just a job to these wonderful people; it is a way of life and a difficult one at that. The Board of Directors continues to be forever grateful for the hard work these dedicated individuals demonstrate every day.
Speaking of the Board, as the new President I am happy to report that our new Board of Directors is moving forward and learning from the areas smartest advisers who have generously donated their time to help us be the best BOD we can be, and the the governing body that our shelter deserves. Currently the Board consists of myself, George Vandenberg (President), Cheryl Edwards (Vice President), Kim Rumble (Treasurer), Sara MacDonald (Secretary), Jen Arsenault, Jackie Conlon, Ron Denning, Shane Goodfellow, Brian Postma and Judy McKeegan (Past President). These people come from many different walks of life and lend a lot of diverse points of view which is exactly what you want to make the best possible decisions.
As I draw this to a close, I want to remind you how important it is to keep your pets spayed and neutered and take precautions to keep them safe. We are doing what we can to spread the message and we need your help to do this as well. Please take a moment to tell friends and neighbours about these important issues. All we want is to preserve life and keep animals healthy, happy and loved.Until they all find a home
Sincerely,George VandenbergPresident

Managers Messageby Donna Pyette
Wow, 6 months sure has flown by, so much has happened and so much more is in the works!
I have to say a big thanks to the staff who has endured my transition into the wonderful world of animal welfare, as well as to the many members and volunteers, both new and old alike who have welcomed me so warmly. We are humbled each and everyday by the generosity and support of this great community.
We have so much to celebrate in this 1st quarter of 2013, the biggest news of course is the final approval we have now received from the City of Sarnia to precede with our long anticipated Dog Run. As most of you will remember this project was started in the fall of 2012 by our past Executive Director Dylan Powell in which our Letter Carriers, local businesses and community alike participated in a very successful “Dollar a Door Campaign” raising the needed funds to get this project off the ground. Many city meetings, designs and quotes later the Official Dog Run Plan was approved and we are now moving forward with the project, which should reach completion by late June. I would like to personally thank the City of Sarnia and Dale Engineering for all their help and expertise in seeing this long awaited dream come to fruitation.
I cannot close without mentioning our beloved cat room; it is purr-fect! To see our feline friends basking in front of the bright bay window, soaking in all that sun is such a happy sight for all of us. The fresh bright colour and mural in the room and the added “perch and go’s” in the cat cages…enrich the lives of our feline friends as they await their chance of becoming a part of a family of their own.
I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the shelter on Sunday, July 21st 2013 from 12pm–4pm for our Open House Celebrating two anniversaries, the Sarnia Humane Society’s’ 60th Anniversary and our 30th Anniversary of the shelter at its present location.

Dog’s PrayerTreat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more
grateful for kindness than the lovingheart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, forthough I might lick your hand
betweenblows, your patience and
understandingwill more quickly teach me the
things you would have me learn.
Speak to me often, for your voice isthe world’s sweetest music, as you
must know by the fierce wagging ofmy tail when the sound of your
footstepfalls upon my waiting ear.
Please take me inside when it is coldand wet, for I am a domesticatedanimal, no longer accustomed to
bitter elements. I ask no greater glorythan the privilege of sitting at your
feet beside the hearth.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I sufferthirst. Feed me clean food that I
might stay well, to romp and play anddo your bidding, to walk by your sideand stand ready, willing and able toprotect you with my life, should your
life be in danger.
And, my friend, when I am very oldand I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make a
heroic effort to keep me going. I amnot having any fun. Please see that
my trusting life is taken gently. I shallleave this Earth knowing with the lastbreath I draw that my fate was always
safest in your hands.
How Hot is Hot“A hot car is not a place for a dog. Leave me at home where it’s cool”
Many pets die each year as a result of being left in parked
cars during warm weather.
Temperatures inside a parked car even with the windows
open and in the shade, can rapidly reach very dangerous
levels even on a relatively mild summer day.
A dogs normal body temperature is about 39 degrees C (102
F). Because of a limited ability to sweat, even a short time
in a hot environment can be life threatening.
A dog can withstand a body temperature of 41 degrees C
(106 F) for only a very short time before suffering irreparable
brain damage or even death.
Please TAKE ACTION if you find a dog that you think may
be suffering from heat exhaustion, and the owner cannot
be quickly located; please call the Sarnia Humane Society,
Animal Control or the Police.
Animal Crueltyby Becky Knight –
SDHS/OSPCA Investigations Officer
The Animal Cruelty and Investigations Unit is an integral
part of the SDHS and though it is mandated by the OSPCA,
we are completely funded through the generous donations
of our community. We have two agents that cover the entire
Lambton County area.
We urge you to please call 519-344-7064 if you suspect
animal neglect or cruelty in your neighborhood. It is the
right of ALL animals to be provided food, water, shelter and
adequate care, which includes Veterinarian attention if they
are sick or injured. It is YOUR responsibility to provide this for
an animal you take into your home or if you suspect animal
abuse or cruelty. We are their voice; please help us to make
this a caring, animal loving and responsible community.
Dog Day Afternoon a HUGE SuccessThe Sarnia & District Humane Society is excited to declare
the recent Dog Day Afternoon at Degroot’s Nurseries was
an unparalleled success. An estimated 1100 people and
400 dogs (that’s a total of 3800 feet) took in the show.
The event raised approximately $6000.00 which will go
directly to the Animal Welfare fund which covers the
medical costs, food and the care of the animals in the
Humane Societies care.
“The generosity of the Degroot’s staff was amazing” “They provided the space, some great direction, and
John Degroot himself spent the day directing traffic” 24 volunteers and 44 vendors helped make the day fun
and exciting for all. The event featured demonstrations,
contests and vendor booths all catered to dogs and dog
owners. The stage was donated by Aluma Systems and
Carpenters Local 1256. It serves as the centerpiece
for many of the demonstrations, announcements and
contests which included “Pet Look- Alike”, “Biggest and
Smallest Dog” and many more. While no official date
has been selected, it is hopeful Dog Day Afternoon will
take place next year and become an annual tradition.
-The event was a success, but we learned a lot and
are confident that next years show will be even bigger
and better!”

FIV FACTSby Sherman
Did you know that most FIV+ cats live just as long as a healthy
indoor cat?
The FIV virus is quite similar to the HIV virus that people get, it
can only be transmitted cat to cat and is a milder illness then HIV.
Which is a good reason why FIV cats make the purrfect indoor
cat as it reduces their chances of getting ill if they go outside
or spreading the disease.
FIV cats do have a lower immune system and may be more prone
to catching colds or other infections from other animals so extra
care is needed. However, the number one killer of FIV+ cats shown
in a recent American study was euthanasia, not any condition of
the disease. As a matter of fact cats that are FIV+ usually show
no signs or symptoms of the disease until they are well into their
teens, some never show signs at all.
Outdoor male unneutered cats do seem to be the most susceptible
as the virus is transmitted through deep bite wounds. FIV+ cannot
be transferred through normal play, sharing of food or water dishes
and it is quite normal for a FIV+ cat and a FIV- cat to co-habitat
with each other, as long as they get along.
FIV+ cats are often passed by in our shelter; most spend months
here waiting for that special home. Please give these wonderful
cats a chance, it is your opportunity to save a life and they make
wonderful indoor companions.
The Cats Meowby Resident Cats Sherman & Mac
This spring has been an especially exciting one as our front cat
room has undergone a much needed and purrfect transformation!
Roland Deroy of Roland Window & Doors began the transformation
with the installation of an 8x5 Bay Window to allow in the
beautiful warm sun, and oh how our feline friends love it! Many
times throughout the day you can usually find one, if not a few
of us sprawled out along the wide bay soaking up the rays…it is
purr heaven. Jim, our in house animal care taker and maintenance
man extraordinaire added a brilliant splash of sunshine yellow
to our dull dreary walls to spiff it up and lift our spirits while
awaiting our new families to come and meet us.
After some discussion it was decided that the room still needed
a feline touch, so we sought out feline fanatic Lizz Hubert from
Utopian Lullabies Murals & Designs to come in and work her
magic! You must come in and see the beautiful cat mural we
now have…it is tailtalizing to say the least!
Our flat screen tv/dvd player we have decided to generously
donate to our intake room at the back of the shelter to keep our
furry friends entertained with all the sights and sounds we love-
birds, fish, and bees buzzing until they can come up and join us.
We are now awaiting our new “Cats Meow” Cat Garden which
will be happily done by Degroot Nurseries in June in front of
our Bay Window. This garden will feature a bird bath, feeders,
butterfly and bird attracting plants and is sure to offer us hours
of stimulating viewing from our bay window.
On behalf of Sherman, Mac, and all our happy cat community
here at the shelter as well as the staff, management and Board
of Directors we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and
appreciation to the family of Renata Walker for making this room
and garden possible. Renata Walker was a much loved volunteer,
Trust Committee Chair and is best known for her knitted “catnip
mice” as well as her loving dedication to all our feline friends and
Spay/Neuter Program here at the shelter. A dedication service
in memory of Renata Walker will be held at the Sarnia Humane
Society at a later date.
Heartworm Season Has ArrivedThough we all love the warm weather when it arrives, here at
the shelter we are all very aware that warm weather also brings
mosquitoes…which brings the dreaded Heartworm to many
untreated dogs.
Heartworm is easily prevented which makes it a disease that is a
no-brainer! Immature worms, called larvae circulate in the blood
and live in the heart and lungs of animals, mostly dogs. The larvae
in the bloodstream are spread from dog to dog by mosquitoes. An
affected animal with heartworm will become severely ill and death
may occur, treatment is normally expensive and lengthy as well
as very unpleasant for your pet.
The Sarnia Humane Society is aware of the importance of
Heartworm prevention and has now teamed up with Merial “Heart
Guard” to help your new family member get off to a good start.
Beginning this month the shelter will begin treating dogs, which
test negative for heartworm, with Heart Guard. Merial, the makers
of Heart Guard will then donate a $20.00 off coupon to all new
adoptees for the purchase of Heart Guard so they may continue
this important treatment. That’s not all, for your 1st purchase of
Heart Guard and the submission of your receipt to Merial, you will
receive another $20. off coupon towards your second purchase!
If you have not had your dog tested for heartworm please do
so without delay. Preventative treatment is needed as long as
mosquitoes are out, usually 5-6 months.
