Those In Need of Prayer & Healing Wishing Oscar continued healingafter his fractured pelvis. We need to keep Gus in our prayers. He had a growth removed from his

bladder. In three weeks he is to return to have itrechecked and if it hasn’t returned, he is “out ofthe woods.” Gus is anxious about the return. Rachel had a scan and was found to becancer clear, but she still has some treatmentsremaining. At the conclusion of those treat-ments, they will do another scan with hopes itstill shows no cancer. A Rachel is the onlypatient on this experimental chemo trial and itseems to be working for this type of cancer.

Volunteer EXPO Zach and Vern had represented the club

at the Volunteer EXPO on October 1

at the Dahl Art Center. We distrib-

uted 29 of our broc-hures and explained about the volunteer projectsthat the Kiwanis club does in the communityusing the photographs on the display board. Wemight get one new member from our contacts. Regardless, a number of visitors did learn moreabout us and what we do.

For the children that came with theirparents, they were able to fill a paper pot withpotting soil and some grass seed. Taking ithome, they can grow and trim their own person-al grass this winter and then plant it outside inthe Spring. A personal green spot of their own!

Healthy Eyes What Should You Do?

(Continued from the September Issue)

Wear Protective Goggles – Planning to doyard work or do house cleaning with causticchemicals? Protective eyeware can keep rocks, branches, chemicals and more away from youreyes. But the best protection is ANSI Z87.1rated wrap around polycarbonate snug lenseswhich will protect your eyes from branch pokes, high velocity flying stones, and chemicalsplatters.

Make An Eye Appointment – Everyoneshould make an appointment for a compre-hensive eye exam around the age of 40. Thisincludes an eye dilation by an optometrist, oreven better an ophthalmologist, who will lookfor eye problems or disease such as age relatedmacular degeneration and glaucoma (a loss ofperipheral vision caused by pressure-relatednerve damage. These are the leading causes ofblindness and both can be slowed if caughtearly. Healthy adults should get an exam everytwo to three years, and a diabetic or a personwith high blood pressure should have an annual exam by an ophthalmologist.

Look Away From the Light – Lookingaway from ultrabright objects, like the sun or

laser pointers, can permanently damage yoursight. Damage can occur even if you arelooking through sunglasses. Looking at a sunsetat the end of the day isn’t as dangerous becausethe light is reflected, but limit your exposuretime that you are staring off into the sunset.

Keep Your Glasses On Standby – Considerwearing glasses while you are in places wherebacteria are harbored such as hot tubs and golfcourses. Contact lenses act like sponges and cantrap infection causing bacteria. One in every500 contact lens wearers get a serious infectioneach year.

What You Could Do Reduce Your Eye-Rubbing – Vigorous

rubbing can cause more damage than relief. Itwill stretch the very delicate skin around youreyes, but it could also cause abrasion of yourcornea, increase the eye’s pressure, and causedistorted vision. Instead of rubbing your eyes, avoid the triggers (a scented candle, a cat, etc.).

Go Easy on the Yoga Headstands – Stand-ing on your head can cause eye pressures to sky-rocket. If your eyes can’t tolerate the pressure, itcan speed optic nerve damage. For those witheven early stages of glaucoma, inversions shouldbe avoided. These poses in yoga class should beskipped for more gentle poses such as legs-up-the-wall.

Follow The 20-20-20 Rule – Staring atyour computer screen or phone screen zaps youreye’s moisture because you doesn’t blink asmuch because of these near-task activities. Dryeyes can be painful and can lead to scars or evenulcers on the cornea or loss of vision. Lower thescreen below your normal sight level and followthe 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, take a 20second break and take a 20 feet look into thedistance. Your eyes can rest, refocus, andrehydrate with some much needed blinks.

Listen To Your Eyes – Do not ignore yourwatering eyes when you chop onions, peppers,or wood burning fires. What may seem like atemporary irritation can lead to an inflammation. Keep your distance, open windows for ventila-tion, or grab those goggles for chopping onions.

This is also an exciting time for ourfoundation, which has grown dramaticallyduring the past three years thanks to the strongsupport of our members. In fact, we awardedgrants to support 19 Kiwanis-family programsduring the past fiscal year. The generous supportof the Kiwanis family helped improve the livesof children in more than 14 districts.

Who Is It Going To Be?

The mystery is building! Who are the Active Kiwanians for2015-2016? No one, except Vern, will know until the Christmas Partywhen the certificates are awarded.

But the second question is “Who is goingto be the Active Kiwanians for 2016-2017?” Asof October 1st, all records are “expunged” andeveryone has a new chance to be a winner. Allyou need to do is attend a combination of about50 club meeting and equivalent volunteer hours. So get started this coming Tuesday!

Board Meeting Summary The Board of Directorsmet at the VFW on September21st with nine memberspresent. Convened at 11:42.

The financials werereviewed for August. The budget was to give$150 to Dear Ones but it was decided to giveonly the amount which was donated this year($67 currently). Lonnie reported that as ofSeptember 14, 523 pairs of shoes have beendistributed for a total value of $12,917.51. Looking at anticipated expenses for the nextmonth, it was projected that the year will end inthe red by between $2000 to $3000. We haveCDs to cover the overage, but it isn’t somethingthat we continue to do

The Board is still looking for a potentialnew location for club meetings. The Boys Clubwon’t be available until October. The LaCrosseStreet Perkins was suggested and being checked.

The majority of the time was spent puttingtogether a proposed balanced budget for 2016-17 to present to the membership on October 4th.
