In January of 2019, California became the 23rd state to enact a “Slow Down to Get Around” law. This law became effective January 1st, 2020. Slow Down to Get Around laws save lives by requiring drivers to exercise caution and avoid distractions when they approach a waste and recycling collection truck. Solid waste collection is the 5th deadliest job in the United States according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Most incidents are due to drivers failing to yield to collection trucks, but with proper awareness, these incidents are completely preventable. Everyone deserves to go home from their job safe at the end of the day. Slow down when approaching a garbage truck making its rounds. Stop if necessary to allow workers to do their jobs. Look for workers before attempting to pass the truck. Check for traffic approaching from the opposite direction before proceeding around the truck. Avoid distractions like texting, talking on the cell phone, changing the radio station or programming a GPS while driving near a garbage truck. New Year, New UNiformsOver the next few months, you may notice that your neighborhood MarBorg driver is sporting a new outfit. Many of our employees work in hazardous environments around moving vehicles and equipment, and the safety of our employees is a top priority. In accordance with our strong commitment to safety, the former tan and orange uniforms will now be replaced with high visibility fluorescent yellow shirts and jackets.

The need to be seen is critical for our employees’ safety, especially for those who work around moving vehicles or equipment. In an effort to prevent injuries and fatalities from “struck-by” hazards, workers wearing high-visibility garments help alert vehicle operators of their presence, especially in low-light environments. The new and improved uniforms will comply with the latest Federal and State standards regarding safety in the work environment.

As we roll out our fluorescent new uniforms, be sure to pay close attention to the sleeves. We are excited to recognize our team for their continued dedication and service with a “years of service” patch. These patches, to be displayed on employees’ sleeves, will be provided to team members in 5-year increments. For example, once an employee has worked for MarBorg for 5 consecutive years, they will receive a “5 Years of Service” patch in recognition; once an employee has worked for MarBorg for 10 consecutive years they will receive a “10 Years of Service” patch, and so on up to 40 years! These patches are small tokens to express MarBorg’s pride and gratitude for our valued employees.

Many folks in our community and all around the US are stocking up on goods in an effort to self-quarantine. While it’s always good to be prepared, buying in bulk can lead to a different problem – unintentional food waste. Huge containers of food that are opened and not stored correctly can lead to spoilage, and throwing it away leads to wasted food and wasted money. By storing food properly, we can keep our food safe to eat throughout quarantine and make sure our money was well spent. There are also huge environmental benefits to preventing food waste.

Non-perishables are not always non-perishable, but they do last a heck of a lot longer than fresh produce or prepared meals. Non-perishables include items like beans, pasta, rice, and canned goods. Learn about best ways to store common pantry items and much more at http://lessismore.org/articles/bulk-food-storage-during-quarantine.
