SUNDAY WORSHIPNOVEMBER 20 & 27, 2016

(Nov. 27)1st Sunday in Advent“Story of Wonder”
Luke 2:1-5David Hull
First Thoughts
9:40-10:40 AM Bible Study All Ages
5 PM
Jesus did some of his best work around the table. Lessons were taught, stories were told, and people were healed. One quick example can be found in comparing Luke 14 and 15. In Luke 14 Jesus is having dinner with a leader of the Pharisees. Upon seeing how people chose their places around the table, Jesus offered a lesson in humility. He then told one of his best parables about how the Kingdom of God is like a great banquet. All of that happened around the dinner table of a leader of the Pharisees. The next chapter, Luke 15, begins with these words about the eating practices of Jesus, “And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, ‘This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.’” (v. 2) In response, Jesus told the three parables that relate to something being lost: the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son (or Prodigal Son). Criticized for eating with sinners, Jesus teaches us about the grace of God.
There are many examples of Jesus around the table. I would encourage you to read the Gospels and look for others. Jesus did some of his best work around the table. Sunday night we will gather around the table. Our worship on that night will not take place in a pew in the Sanctuary or a chair in the MAC. Instead, it will happen at the table following a Thanksgiving meal. Join us at 5:00 in the Fellowship Hall for what should be a wonderful opportunity for fellowship and worship. The church will provide turkey, dressing, and drinks. You bring your very best covered dish that will feed about 10. We will combine the food and have a feast.
After you have arrived and placed your food on the food table, go ahead and take your seat at a table. Families are encouraged to sit together – friends will find their places near each other. Many of you will have opportunity to meet someone from the church family you do not know. This is the work of love that happens when we gather around the table and break bread together. After a blessing, I will dismiss the room in groups so that you will not have to stand in line long to get your food. As your table waits to be called for the food, you will be encouraged to offer expressions of thanks around your table. What makes your heart thankful this year? Will you share it with those at your table?
Following the meal, we will worship. Our worship will end with an observance of the Lord’s Supper. Remember – Jesus did some of his best work around the table. “We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing . . .” It happens around the table this Sunday night. I hope that you will join us. David Hull

The Prayer Ministry is planning a Week of Prayer event for January 9-13, 2017, to start off the 200th year anniversary celebration. We are in the process of compiling prayer requests from each area of ministry in our church to be placed in a prayer booklet. Each day’s prayer guide will be divided into three sections: Upward (Confessional and Praise), Inward (Inside our Church), and Outward (Outside our Church). This booklet will not only be our guide during this Week of Prayer, but will also serve as a prayer guide for us to use during the year 2017. Send us your prayer requests for your area of service and ministry so we can include them in the Inward and Outward sections of the Prayer Booklet? We are requesting that you be as specific and detailed as you can and to include any scripture or scripture references that might pertain to your prayer request. Please email you requests to Sherri Hollar at [email protected] or call 706-855-9767.
200th Anniversary NewsOur new FBC history book is on the way to the publishers! We have been given a wonderful opportunity to honor and remember special people in this book. The last pages will be dedicated to our church family. You may purchase a line that will have your name on it and the individuals that you are honoring or remembering. Each line is $20 and there is no limit on how many lines you may purchase. On some pages it will read:In honor of _________________ by _____________________On others:In memory of _________________by ___________________There are forms in the Church Office on week days with Susan and Lavinia. Please make checks payable to First Baptist Church. This is a wonderful way to honor children, other family members, and to remember someone special. It will be meaningful to see the names of loved ones in our new history book. It is also a way of documenting ones membership at FBC Augusta.
