Your Community Bank®

5 STEPS TO REFiNANCiNG YOuR HOME LOAN1. Why are you refinancing? It’s important to be clear about your motivation for refinancing. If it’s a cheaper interest rate you’re after, make sure you’re comparing apples with apples by looking at the loans’ ‘comparison rates’. If you’re craving better service, ask people you trust about their bank, look at online reviews and research which bank regularly tops customer satisfaction polls and industry awards (hint: it’s Bendigo Bank).2. it’s time to talkDrop in to see your local Bendigo Bank lender and they’ll guide you through the refinancing process which may vary depending on your circumstances and what it is you’re trying to achieve. Together, you’ll choose the perfect home loan and run the numbers so you’ll know exactly what your repayments will be.3. it’s time to applyAs part of the application process your lender may ask you to supply some information such as payslips, rates notice, and statements on debts held with other banks. If you already have your home loan with Bendigo Bank it’s likely the process will be a whole lot easier.

Depending on how much you need to borrow, and how much your house is worth, your lender may need to organise a valuation of your property. This is done by an independent property valuer, not a real estate agent.4. it’s time to cover upOnce your home loan is approved, it’s time to make sure your insurance is adequate. If your new loan is being used to make renovations to your home, your home should be worth more. Your home insurance should reflect its new value. If you’ve bought a new car, booked a holiday, or splashed out on some new furniture, you’ll need to consider your car, travel, or contents insurance.Your lender is also your go-to-guy for insurance so if you have any questions, ask away.5. Settlement day – The big day has arrived! It’s worth staying in touch with your lender and your solicitor so they can keep you up to date with the settlement of your new home loan. From here, it’s hello to a better rate, better service, better car, better holiday, better home, better money management, or better whatever your reason for refinancing.until next month Keith Robinson – 4443 9825

Upper deck rub rails: Having placed the lengths under strain for approx. a week, Stan, Bruce, Rob & Mike set about fine shaping and sanding of the 2 x 4m lengths of spotted gum which are to become the replacement rubrails - port and board (left)

Steering wheel cable pulley housing - port side: Mike set about reparation of damaged timber for housing one of the pulleys for the steering wheel cable (below).

Floor No 7: Using a string line to check alignment, Ian & Neville were able to properly establish the position of replacement floor number 7 enabling them to fasten the floor in position which required the making of double-ended threaded copper bolts to suit (below).

Deck beam - stern: Having used his trusty water-leveller to check & allow (19mm at stern) for hull-twist. Gary continued with shaping and positioning the replacement port side stern-deck beam (below).

Cheers for now, James K. * The JBMMs CREST restoration project receives funding from the Sanctuary Point Bendigo Bank Community Bank® Branch under its Community Sponsorship Programme.

Our August weigh-in sees the beginning of our new fishing year. We saw some good tides which enabled some excellent fishing from the beach. This opinion was shared by Heath and his two daughters Brodie and Charlotte. The two girls caught their bag limit of salmon which is borne out by the two large fish held by Brodie. She was a happy fisher on that day. The rest of the family also caught bag limits of salmon.

Many fishers make good fish cakes from the Australian salmon and one of our members has a dog which also enjoys fresh salmon! The weather was quite cold but some other brave souls fished the Basin with a very nice bag of snapper being presented by Pat and Chris to our weigh master, Tony.Good catches of nice sized flathead were tabled by Paul and Glenn, Bruce and Nigel. The flathead will be considered as part of our deep sea section. Thanks to all who fished, enjoyed the activity and the camaraderie of the weigh in, with the barbecue cooked and served by our regular cook, Gavin.

Well, that’s a wrap for the 2018 AFL season for the Bay and Basin Bombers. The club has run a hugely popular Auskick program for ages 4 to 8 with supercoach Simon Roche and his trusty offsider, Steve the tacklebag.

under 9s coached by Stu Marum and Scott Murrin, developed teamwork and kicking skills during matches most Sundays at venues from Bomaderry to Batemans Bay. Outstanding performances from CJ Malmborg and Rylan Bracken saw them play each week in older age group games for U11s and U13s.

under 11s, coached by Justin Gouin, had a terrific season finishing undefeated and winning the club’s first age group premiership in over 10 years. Fantastic teamwork was a key factor together with some great individual performances from Ollie Driscoll (AFL South Coast U11 ‘Best and Fairest’), Taj Malmborg (highest goal scorer) and Jethro Snelling (best on ground for Grand Final). The boys didn’t have it all their own way, with Ariana Missingham working hard in training and playing a key role in matches.

under 13s managed to snag a few key players from the Shoalhaven Giants as they were unable to field a team this season. Giants Riley Clerget and Zander Wheway helped to boost numbers along with players from our U11s and U9s as well as, Henry Lacey, a late entry to the team visiting from Cocos Island. The team played with great spirit despite limited numbers and a distinct height disadvantage for the younger players. Keanu King was named ‘Best and Fairest’ .

Both u15s and u17s teams were once again combined with the Bomaderry Tigers and coached by Joe Johnstone and Chris Stubbs respectively. Siwa Harvey-Aziz (U17) was named ‘Bomber of the Year’ for 2018.

Other perpetual awards were presented to Cooper Malmborg (Manwarring Award) for tirelessly playing in consecutive Under 9, 11 and 13 age groups. ‘Club Person of the Year’ award was presented to the Malmborg family for their

whole-hearted participation in all matches, committee, coaching roles and for running the club canteen. Lana Malmborg was also awarded AFL ‘Shoalhaven Volunteer of the Year’ Award by AFL area manager Matt Graham.

Finally, none of this would be possible without our generous sponsors. Major sponsor The Country Club, St Georges Basin has supported the Bombers for many years with a grant and as a venue for monthly meetings and annual functions. Huskisson Pictures and Bikes at the Basin – Sanctuary Point are game day sponsors, providing highly popular vouchers for players’ awards on game days. Thank you to our sponsors, coaches, age group managers, committee, parents and players for a great season. Well done for a successful 2018 and Go Bombers in 2019!

An Australian Genesis

Family History

Australia is a multi national cosmopolitan mix of races and cultures and in our research library we aim to encompass all aspects of immigration and integration.A pre-loved book which was donated to our library is packed full of the most wonderful stories of Jewish arrivals to this country, from the very early convict days to the mid 19th century. The biographies tell of the circumstances surrounding these people, mostly through persecution, opportunism or crime, and in the case of convicts, of their circumstances, crime, trial, and voyage to a new land. In all cases their life in Australia is documented accurately and vividly, and not all were law abiding, repentant, and reformed citizens.A lot of Jewish immigrants changed their names to avoid persecution, and as you progress with your family history you may well come across a change of name which will surprise you.A local man of note was Michael Hyam, and he is mentioned several times in the book, so if you have links to this family then you really must read this book.Extremely well written, and holding the reader’s attention, “Australian Genesis. Jewish Convicts And Settlers 1788 – 1850” by J.S. Levi and G.F. J. Bergman, is a ‘must read’, and after what

was to be a glance through it to determine its library classification, I found the afternoon had drifted away while I was lost in the lives of these newcomers to the colony. Two other books on our shelves concentrating on the Jewish in Australia are “These Are The Names” Jewish lives in Australia 1788 – 1850, and “Pages of History. A Century of The Australian Jewish Press” which contains the most wonderful photographs. We are always very grateful for donations of items for the library, many books were self-published, or are now out of print, and therefore difficult to source, but as long as our loyal members are making these very kind donations, we can continue to provide extra sources of information for your research. Our library in the Old School at 888 Greenwell Point Road, Pyree, is open every Sunday, and the first & second Thursday of each month, both days from 10am to 4pm, with volunteers on hand to assist if required. Our General meetings are held on the first Saturday of the month at 1.30pm & we usually have a guest speaker, followed by afternoon tea and a chat. Visitors are always very welcome so come along & see what we do and what we have in our library to help you.

Issues raised at August meeting:1. Council meetings Webcast: SCC is now

streaming live video and audio of all its meetings. See https://webcast.shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au/

2. NSW Govt. Low Rise Medium Density Housing Code: A 12 month deferral until July 2019 has been granted to allow Council to consider the implications for the Shoalhaven.

3. Husky Pub extension: the latest proposal for the construction of a Function Centre, Restaurant & Café at the Husky Pub can be viewed on www.shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au

4. Voyager Park: the final upgrade is expected to be completed in Nov, costing $800,000. Information available via the SCC website.

5. Urgent Maintenance: Council is seeking input from residents on urgent maintenance issues in our area. Garry Kelson is point of contact for HWCV (0458 002 874 or [email protected])

6. Husky Triathlon Update: It is important that the Event Application Form from Elite Energy for the next Triathlon event in February be received before Oct 1st to allow sufficient time for review and finalisation.

7. Project Officer: Clr Jo Gash advised that Council will be appointing a project officer to assist residents in all Shoalhaven Communities to solve increasing problems regarding traffic, tourism etc.

8. Roundabout: Clr Jo Gash is hopeful of receiving $25,000 to enable a design to be prepared for a roundabout at the corner of Sydney & Owen Streets, outside the Picture Theatre.

9. Bike Track: we support the development of a bike track connecting Wrights Beach, Bream Beach, Erowal Bay and Old Erowal Bay

10. Future of Anglican Church, Cnr Hawke & Bowen Streets: Heritage listing on the church building was lifted many years ago. The church was recently de-consecrated and may be sold. There is real concern about the possibility of the land being used for high rise development. Clr Gash advised that there is no DA in Council yet. The beautifully forested back area of the block bordering on Currumbene Street is Crown land; potential land right claims can prevent development there.

11. Residents’ Expectations for Huskisson: A motion was passed that HWCV form a temporary sub-committee to articulate the expectations and wishes of Huskisson residents for the future growth and development of their village.

We are a community consultative body (CCB) to Shoalhaven City Council. The group meets

bi monthly, 2nd Mon at 7pm (Feb.-Nov.), at the Community Centre, Cnr Tomerong & Dent St, in

Huskisson. Residents welcome to join. Next meeting (AGM) will be on October 18.

Life - Through My Lensby Corinne Le Gall Check out Life - Through My Lens @ CorinneLeGallPhotography

Photography

COMMON COMPOSITION RULES THE GOLDEN HOUR - Landscapes

You may have heard photographers mention this rule often, especially a landscape photographer, - but not restricted to only this genre. The golden hour is when the sun is low on the horizon, roughly one hour before sunset and roughly, one hour after sunrise.Shooting when the sun is overhead during the day, although you may get a lot of light, what you will find is that there is not much definition in your produced photograph, i.e. not many shadows (landscape), hence a ‘flat’ photograph and too many shadows (portraits).

A landscape photograph showing soft lighting and shadows is more appealing to the viewer than a ‘flat’ or a one dimensional image. This photograph taken by myself in Namibia of huge sand dunes, is an example where shadows play a big part in whether the photograph will work or not.Had there been no shadows, all the dark places from the front to the back of this shot would have been of the same lighting, hence a one dimension result. But, by my physical position when taking this shot in relation to where the sun is, the image has produced the shadows which clearly show the height of the dunes as well as throwing a golden light across what is normally, a blindingly, plain landscape where the only subject is a bunch of sand dunes.Next issue: Common Composition Rules of Photography - Golden Hour Portraits

Monthly Feature

THE BLACKMORE– BOLDEN SHiELDContributed by John BlackmoreLast month, the Monthly Feature looked at the influence of Len Bolden AM on the foundation of the sport of soccer in the Shoalhaven District. Last month was also the 46th consecutive year the Blackmore/Bolden Shield has been awarded to the men’s first grade premiership winners in the sport in the Shoalhaven. For the two men involved, though, this trophy has represented much more than that. As a result of their commitment to a sport, they have been able to maintain a friendship that has lasted for over 50 years. It is interesting sometimes how our lives turn out, and the cycles they take us in. In the case of these two men, when they met in the Shoalhaven in the 1960s, they were both young married men with small children. They later discovered they were only months apart in age. One had joined the navy in England when he left school, while the other had served a carpentry and joinery apprenticeship around the foreshores of Sydney Harbour with Booth Industries. In local soccer, they started their involvement together at the Nowra Showground Added Area where Nowra Rovers Junior Soccer Club trained. Tom Blackmore became President of that Club, and Len Bolden was its Secretary. Both had daughters, who at that point did not have an opportunity to play their sport. Basketball was a growing sport played by both boys and girls in the Shoalhaven, so the Nowra Rovers entered female basketball teams. Some of these girls went on to have long careers as basketballers, with a number of them going on to play at a representative level. As was stated last month, another opportunity Tom and Len saw for their club was to attempt to establish a home ground for the sport in Nowra/Bomaderry. The advent of a Shoalhaven Junior Soccer Association in 1963 meant that extra fields soon became necessary for competitions. To begin with, some of the grounds that were

often used were Connolly’s Oval along Albatross Road, Horgan’s Oval along Cambewarra Road, and Calcraft’s farm at Terara. All of these were on private land. And the Peter Hanson Field in the grounds of Nowra Infants School, used in the 1960s to kick off the sport, was a shared ground with junior rugby league. Artie Smith Oval at Bomaderry was used after its opening in 1965, some matches were played in the grounds of Bomaderry High School after it opened in 1968, and Lyrebird Park was opened in 1971, with two fields designated for soccer. Later, Bomaderry Oval became a venue for competition matches in 1976, with Sharman Park at North Nowra also being used by this time as a venue for the sport. But what proved critical in the development of the sport in the longterm was the construction of a field at South Nowra. Originally built for the Nowra Rovers Junior Soccer Club and Nowra Greens senior teams, as outlined in last month’s feature, the opening in 1968 of a single field at South Nowra grew to a second, one which became floodlit, and a permanent amenities block, by the time that Tom Blackmore and Len Bolden had completed their partnership in 1978 as President and Secretary of the Shoalhaven District Amateur Soccer Association. Today, the complex comprises half a dozen fields, and numerous buildings. These serve as amenities blocks, dressing rooms, clubhouses, training facilities and meeting places. The Shoalhaven and Southern N.S.W., or Southern Branch, organisations within the sport are based there, with all Shoalhaven finals and grand finals, as well as representative home matches, being played there. Numerous state level carnivals have been held there over the years, for around 20 years it was the home of Shoalhaven City Soccer Club, while for the last few years, it has played host to the inaugural National Indigenous Football carnivals.

Monthly Feature

The transition in 1973 away from a handful of teams playing every second weekend in a combined competition against Southern Highlands and Southern Tablelands teams doubled the number of senior teams based in the Shoalhaven in one season. Thirteen teams in two senior grades contested the inaugural season of the newly named Shoalhaven District Amateur Soccer Association that year. From half a dozen first grade sides, H.M.A.S. Albatross became the first winners of the Blackmore-Bolden Shield.Tom Blackmore had made the timber shield himself for the trophy, sourcing local Kangaroo Valley cedar which had come out of trees removed for Tallowa Dam when the Shoalhaven Scheme was first under construction in the early 1970s.By the end of 1978 when Tom and Len’s partnership as President and Secretary of the association came to an end, there were close to 20 senior teams competing in three grades in the S.D.A.S.A. It must be remembered too that from 1974 to 1978, the Shoalhaven experienced three major floods. This made for interesting times trying to reschedule matches due to wet weather, grounds inundated with floodwaters, and people trying to travel for matches from Milton/Ulladulla to Shoalhaven Heads, and vice versa, and all points in between. While Tom Blackmore and Len Bolden have the first grade premiership trophy named jointly after them, their treasurer Billy Graham (at the formation of the S.D.A.S.A.) also donated a trophy which for some seasons was used as the reserve grade premiership trophy. The first female executive member of the S.D.A.S.A., Marina Bradley ( Monthly Feature March 2004), donated a trophy for the minor premiership in the first grade mens competition. Since 1975, this has been awarded as the Reg Bradley Trophy. As was stated at the outset of this article, the friendship between Tom Blackmore and Len Bolden AM continued well after their partnership founding senior soccer, now also referred to as football, competitions in the Shoalhaven. Both had long involvements with the Rotary movement. Tom was a foundation member, and the first life member, of the South Nowra Rotary Club after it began in 1978. Len was involved with Berry Rotary Club, then Gerringong up until recent times. For some years, he co-ordinated all Rotary overseas exchange projects for N.S.W., as well as being integral to the R.S.L. organisation

in the Kiama/Gerringong area. Both men were given the honour of being made Paul Harris Fellows within the Rotary movement. Both were made Life Members of S.D.A.S.A. before their direct involvement with the sport ceased, with Len by that time also being the first person from the Shoalhaven to be awarded Life Membership of its state body.

Marine Rescue Sussex Inlet (MRSI) is based

in the Sussex Inlet River at the end of Sussex Road, one nautical mile upstream from the river entrance Bar. Our area of responsibility includes St Georges Basin, Sussex Inlet River, Swan Lake and the ocean areas from Cape St George to the North to Red Head (Bendalong) out to 7 nautical miles.MRSI Assets: include the Base and two Rescue Vessels – Sussex 10 (5.8m) and Sussex 30 (8.7m). The organisation is staffed by volunteers who maintain a 24 hr radio watch (at the base during normal working hours or from home) and crew the Rescue Vessels to respond to calls for assistance.Rescues and Assistance: Approx 60% of all requests for assistance originate from vessels operating in St Georges Basin, about 30% from vessels in the Sussex Inlet River and about 10% from vessels to seaward of the Bar or encounter problems (usually capsizing) while crossing the Bar. About 50% of vessels requiring a tow are towed to one of the boat ramps around St Georges Basin or private moorings in the Basin. The above statistics indicate that St Georges Basin boaters are primary beneficiaries of our services and regular topical articles about boating safety would be welcomed. The majority of calls for assistance originate due to engine failure, but some arise due to propellers damaged on rocks and running out of fuel. Instances of people in the water arose about four times in the past year, due to overloading or inappropriate vessel size for the conditions at the time, and crossing the bar. There have not been any deaths or serious injuries in recent years.

Boat Licence Testing: MR Sussex Inlet conduct General Boat Licence and PWC licence workshops and tests. The next session will be on 6 October 2018. Call 4441 3555 and visit the base to make a booking and pay a $10 deposit to secure a place. If demand exceeds the limit per workshop, additional workshops can be scheduled.Volunteer to Save Lives on the Water: Volunteering for Marine Rescue is a great way meet people, learn advanced boating and mariner skills (boat handling, navigation, damage control, survival at sea, First Aid and advanced resuscitation and radio work), or contribute your own expertise to the team of volunteers already enrolled as members. We are always seeking men and women volunteers of all ages to join the unit and often fast track our training to qualify members as radio operators and Rescue Vessel crew in minimum time. Most of the Marine Rescue qualifications have civil accreditation. Come and have a chat with the Radio Operator on watch at the base and register your interest in becoming a member. Safe Boating

Did you know there are over 900 JPs in the Shoalhaven? The Shoalhaven Branch of the NSW Justices Association runs a weekday JP Community Desk from 9am to 2pm, in the front foyer of the Federal Member for Gilmore’s Office. Web http://www.jp.nsw.gov.au and click "Find a JP" also has a listing. In home service avail. What might you need a JP for? The most common requirement is to obtain certified copies of an original document. Please note that in this electronic age, there are additional requirements for certifying something sent to you electronically. If you need a certified copy, you do not personally need to bring those documents to a JP as this service does not require us to identify you, all we need to check is the originals! So someone else could do this for you if you cannot get to the Community Desk.Another thing you might need to produce is a Statutory declaration to ‘declare’ a matter to be true to the best of your knowledge and belief. Then, if there are matters to do with court – for example a divorce or to prove evidence, you will have to complete an affidavit. If you have to add extra information to an Affidavit, it is called an Annexure and a JP will need to carry out additional administration to deal with the contents of an Annexure(s).Sometimes it is simply a matter of having a JP to Witness your Signature. What JPs cannot do is give you legal advice but we can point you in the right direction. One last piece of advice – please do NOT laminate your Australian Citizenship Certificate because the latest advice we have from the Department of Attorney General and Justice is that we cannot certify a laminated Citizenship Certificate. Most other laminated documents can be certified.if you have any questions, please telephone us on 0407 065 031.

How to deal with WasteThe JBMM put on a successful Science Week in August. Among other events I attended the Smart Waste Management session put on by Shoalhaven Council. I was surprised how much I didn’t know about which household items can and can not be recycled. Plastics bags and all forms of soft plastic have no place in the Yellow Bins, they contain elements which are toxic. So what to do with them? You can take them to RedCycle drop off points (redcycle.net.au). Some of the plastic is turned into park benches and board walks, which abound in the Shoalhaven. Good news! All plastic bottle tops, and most other small plastic items, also have no place in the Yellow bins, as they can’t be sorted out in the recycling process. Until the technology becomes even more sophisticated, it is best to put them straight into the Red bins, for Landfill. Most steel and aluminium items can be recycled, without tops, as long as they don’t contain food scraps. All major electronic items - phones, computers, TVs, fridges - have to be taken to one of Councils Recycling Depots, there are 9 in the Shoalhaven. They may also be accepted back by the shops where they were bought. In conclusion here is some food for waste-full thought: while the consumers are now asked to be careful with waste, there is little evidence to show that the companies who produce the ever increasing amount of it, mainly in the form of packaging, make any effort to reduce it. The pressure for economic growth and profit is obviously too strong. That needs to change, in the interest of the environment. But how?

Spring arrived with some showers in our area which of course is most welcome and brings rapid growth to our plants and seedlings. Wish it were more wide spread and consistent in the drought areas of our country. Our regular supporters managed to find us on the third Saturday of the month in September although I had given the wrong date, my sincere apologies. our fundraiser day is always the third Saturday of the month and so your next chance to buy will be 20th october. Again Ellen and Charm will have their tables displayed with jam, preserves and pickles and excess vegetables and plants will be available. Our winter growing has been most successful and our Garlic may be ready for harvest. We will learn to plait these into decorative hangings to display in the kitchen, storing them for use throughout the year. There is a garlic Spray, a non-toxic spray, effective for aphids and cabbage moth caterpillars and is sudden death to mosquitoes (use on stagnant water, where they breed). (Recipe from Shirley Stackhouse)

1. Soak 90g (3oz) chopped garlic in 2 teaspoons of kerosene or white oil for 48hours.

2. Dissolve 8g (1/4oz) of oil based soap in a little hot water, add more water to make 500ml (1 pint) and add to the garlic mixture.

3. Use 1 part garlic solution to 99 parts water. 4. The mixture should be strained and stored in

a plastic container; it becomes stronger after being kept for a few weeks, but may be used immediately. Use the garlic spray as often as necessary and always repeat after rain.

Once again, we are most grateful and amazed at the ability of the Construction Team in securing the rear of the Community Garden under netting. This was donated to us by a former farmer from Milton who sold his property and contacted us to see if we could use the material in the garden. It is enclosing the rear beds, so our tomatoes and corn will be protected from insects, birds and rodents and the yield will be of higher quality and more abundant.

Our success in production at the Community Garden is largely due to the high quality compost which is produced on site, by a very committed hardworking duo. This dedicated team are constantly layering, stirring, watering and tending the many composting bins along the side and back of the garden plot. Layer upon layer of tip mulch, grass clippings, horse poo, alfalfa and coffee grounds are levelled into the bin and covered for three to six months, until the heat dissipates. Other additives are crushed egg shells, pigeon poo and slurry from vegetable matter, recycled from the garden growth, and of course water. Each bin is at a different stage of composting so clear documentation and attention is required. At certain stages of the process of composting aerating is required, which is physically demanding. Our dedicated duo work very hard and consistently to maintain the development of the compost used on the garden beds to refurbish them. Collection of all these products for the composting are carried out by our members, and we are extremely grateful to the many people and businesses who kindly donate materials for recycling. We are also very grateful for the ongoing support of Club Jervis Bay and The Country Club, StGB with a generous grant again this year, for the purchase and construction of a Bee Hive for Native Bees and also much need Solar Panels.

Top Times at TomerongThe term began with two days of celebrations for naidoc Week which was held in the first week of the school holidays. We began our celebrations with an assembly and then NAIDOC themed Doing Things Together activities across K-6. The next day the whole school attended Jervis Bay Maritime Museum and learnt about local Aboriginal culture.

Instead of Interest Groups this term, we had Peer Support groups run by trained Year 5 leaders each week. The Peer Support groups consisted of students from Kindergarten to Year 4 with Year 6 working on transition to high school activities and the focus was on friendships.

Our 2018 tournament of minds team involving seven Year 5 and Year 6 students spent the first five weeks of the term working on their solution to their Language Literature challenge ‘Page to Screen’. This was presented to a panel of judges at the NSW South Coast regional final at the University of Wollongong. The team also had to do a five-minute spontaneous challenge which was only revealed on the day.

education Week was held in Week 3 with the theme ‘Today’s Schools-creating tomorrow’s world’. We marked the occasion with an assembly and ‘Leading the Way’ awards for two students from each class. The primary choir sang ‘Heroes’ and Kindergarten sang ‘The Hello Song’. Assembly was followed by open classrooms.

Once again, the Student representative council held two fundraisers this term. The first was to support the ‘nowra to dubbo drought relief drive’. Students could dress as a farmer or a farm animal and donate either a gold coin or

some dried or tinned animal food. We managed to raise a massive $550 and a ute full of donations. The second was the annual cupcake day in support of the rSPca. These cupcakes are always very creatively decorated.

Book Week was celebrated in a huge way this year with three special occasions, a visit from local children’s author, D.C. Green, second was our annual Book Week Parade (theme was ‘Find Your Treasure’) , finally, the very entertaining ‘Shoalhaven library roadshow’ performed two short plays, based on two of the Children’s Book Council Australia shortlisted books ‘Boy’ and ‘Mopoke’.

The Premier’s reading challenge finished this term with over 100 students receiving awards for participating and several reaching gold level.

This term, the primary choir continued practising their songs for the Shoalhaven music festival which was held over two nights in early September. We performed on the second night with five other schools as a massed choir at Bomaderry High School. We also sang ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ as our individual school song and sounded beautiful.

Forty students from various ages attend the district athletics carnival. From those forty, six went to the regional athletics carnival in Canberra. Years 5 and 6 had their afl gala day, as did Year 3 and 4 with their dragon tag gala day.

The swim scheme was offered once again for students in Year 1 to Year 6. This program is run over two weeks with students attending the Bay and Basin Leisure Centre for 45 minute intensive swimming lessons every day.

Other events included a visit from Shoalhaven city council’s King and Queen of green with their ‘Say No to Plastic’ Show, Year 6 held a fundraiser at Huskisson Pictures with a screening of the movie ‘Christopher Robin’, Years K-2 had a visit from the responsible pet education program and four students participated in the regional final of the Premier’s Spelling Bee at North Nowra Public School.

Well done again to everyone at Tomerong Public School for all their hard work in Term 3. As always, continue to ‘Aim High’ in Term 4 and stay tuned for more top times at Tomerong!

What’s the latest atAfter a jam packed 3rd term our staff and students are enjoying a well earned break with the school holidays upon us.

Term 4 is set to be loads of fun with everything from Leisure Sports to Gold Day for our students to look forward to.

Our P&C will be running their Christmas Photo Fundraiser this month where families can have a photo taken by a professional photographer with a Christmas themed background set up in our Welcome Space.

Year 5 students interested in School Leadership roles next year will have the opportunity to address the student body with Captain Speeches coming up at the end of the month. Our school elects two School Captains and eight School Team Leaders each year. These ten School Leaders have a range of responsibilities bestowed upon them including Sports Equipment Monitor, flag raising, running assemblies and hosting our Forever Forward Radio Program. Our Leaders also attend the National

Young Leaders Day Conference in Sydney where they join schools from around the state to take part in an inspirational day of amazing celebrity guest speakers ranging from sports stars to singers, politicians and authors.

Swim School will commence on the 29th of this month, where students in Year 2, Year 3 and our Support Unit will travel by bus to the Bay and Basin Leisure Centre each day for two weeks of water safety training. This is an essential life skill especially in the area we live, being surrounded by lakes and the most beautiful beaches in the world!

Book Week 2018Vincentia Public School celebrated Book Week in grand style. The children dressed in amazing costumes based on the theme ‘Find your Treasure’. There was a parade for the Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 students and a Stig live show for Stages 2 and 3. The students thought the show was hilarious and very entertaining.

The Carnival Book Fair ran all day in the library and raised money, which will be spent on library resources.

Another Book Week event enjoyed by the students was a visit by a well-known illustrator and occasional author Gabriel Evans. Gabriel talked about his own personal art journey, as well as presenting two workshops where the students looked at interpreting text visually and the tools used in creating art for children’s books.

What a fabulous Book Week our school enjoyed.

A big thank you to all the parents/ carers who supported Book Week by dressing their child in costume, attending the Book Parade or purchasing a book from the Book Fair.
