I don’t know about you, but I’m still recovering from last weekend’s 20 th Year Reunion Classic. Did we have a good time, or what? How about the ShagTimeTwo Junior Dance Team? Weren’t they something? And did you know how many Champions NVSC has? And Sam & Lisa West? Can’t get any better than that! Did you know we had six Founders return for the banquet Saturday night? People came from New York, Pennsylvania, New Mexico (!), Florida, the Carolinas, all over Virginia and who knows where else. I’m sure I missed someone, and I apologize. There were just SO many people having a good time! I especially liked the T-Shirt contest (no, not a wet one!) in which Marcia Conway looked like Scarlett O’Hara (well, almost) in that old Carol Burnett skit. And Craig Jennings looked an awful lot like the Michelin Man. How many T-Shirts did you get on that pole, Marcia? Many, many thanks to all who helped put on The Show. So many that I dare not try to list you all. Just know that y’all did a GREAT job! Even Ronnie Gregory and Doris Keaton, our guests from the SOS Board of Directors were wowed by The Classic. Some of you didn’t hear the big announcements Saturday night from Carol Cassidy, Capital Caring’s Vice President of Resource Development. She relayed to the audience that The Northern Virginia Shag Club has surpassed $250,000 in donations to Capital Caring AND that we will have an engraved Paver Stone at the new Adler Center for Caring in Loudoun County! Folks, that’s quite an accomplishment! So, it’s now August, and that has recently meant the NVSC Picnic. Well, we’re going to have ANOTHER picnic back at The Fairfax Hunt! Nope, we’re not going to Smithfield’s or King’s or Parker’s to buy Q. We’re doing it ourselves! Oh, and we’ll do a little dancing,’ too. And September is right around the corner, and that means SOS Fall Migration! Don’t know what that is? Ask a ‘veteran’ of the Club. Can you imagine 10,000 adults dancing, playing golf and having fun down in North Myrtle Beach? Well, that about explains it. Ten days of glorious fun! On Fun Sunday & Monday, there are big concerts right there on Main Street with Pieces of Eight, Nelson Curry and The Klass Band as well as The Craig Woolard Band, The Fantastic Shakers and Big Joe and The Dynaflows! How I Discovered NVSC…

Barry Newman bumped into NVSC in

1995 when it first met on Backlick Road

once or twice at the Jukebox Club. He

started picking up the shag steps the next

year at Blackies in Springfield, and has

been a member of NVSC ever since. He

has helped out with the Classic

Registration in the past and served for three

years on the NVSC Board. His partner

Kathy sold the NVSC shirts and served

with Barry on the Board. She started

shagging bout five years ago at Rene’s

after receiving some free lessons from

Larry Boyer at Marina Towers. Barry and

Kathy met at Rene’s and have been steady

shaggers ever since.” Shag is great fun

since it keeps you moving to the beat.

Both are retired and remain active in part-

    time work and community activities.

Kathy Miller first started dancing as a

teenager doing the jitterbug. She loves the

rhythm and smooth beats of the shag. Her

preference is fast dancing, whereas her

partner prefers the slower rhythms. She

has been to SOS several times with Barry

and loves the dance festival but does not

    enjoy the heat of September.

Barry has been a dancer (jitterbug & belly

roll) since he was around 13 and became a

serious dancer as a mature teenager around

the 'juke joints' and clubs of Norfolk and

Virginia Beach where he hung out. He was

also a fan of the Dick Clark Show.

According to Barry, shag is a wonderful

partnership for him since it blends blues

music with the shag dance. Barry has

enjoyed going to the September SOS since

it reminds him of the beach scene

(pavilions & juke joints) in Virginia

Beach (Peppermint Beach Club & The

Top Hat) of the '50s when it was more

swinging than today. He and Kathy

enjoy dancing at the Upper Deck now

    whenever they visit Virginia Beach.

    Recipe (From Jim Scanlon)

    GRATINEED CHICKEN IN CREAM SAUCE

    (Four servings)

Pat chicken dry and season with salt and pepper. Heat butter in a 12-inch ovenproof deep heavy sauté pan over moderately

high heat until foam subsides, then brown chicken all over, in batches if necessary; transfer to a plate and cover. Pour off all

but 1 tablespoon fat from pan. Tie parsley, thyme and bay leaf in cheesecloth to make a bouquet garni, then add to pan with

carrots and onions, stirring to coat with fat. Add wine and deglaze by boiling over high heat, stirring and scraping up brown

bits, until liquid is reduced by half, about 3 minutes. Add broth and chicken, skin sides up, with any juices from plate, and

simmer, covered, 10 minutes. Add potatoes, and salt and pepper to taste and simmer, covered, until chicken is cooked through

and potatoes are tender, about 15 minutes. Preheat broiler. Discard bouquet garni. Stir in the whipped cream, peas, and salt

and pepper to taste, then turn chicken in sauce to coat. Use either one large serving dish or individual plates. Sprinkle dish (or

each plate) all over with Gruyere and broil 4 to 5 inches from heat until browned and sauce is bubbling.

    2 pounds chicken thighs

    1 tablespoon unsalted butter

    6 fresh parsley sprigs

    2 fresh thyme sprigs

    1 bay leaf

4 carrots, cut diagonally into 1-inch-thick slic-

    es

2 cups frozen small whole onions, thawed and

    patted dry

    1/2 cup dry white wine

    1/2 cup chicken broth

    1 pound small (1 1/2-inch) boiling potatoes,

    peeled and halved

    1 cup whipping cream

1 cup frozen baby peas, thawed

2 cups coarsely-grated Gruyere Swiss cheese

    Humor

Abe and Esther are flying to Australia for a two-week vacation to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Suddenly, over the public address system, the Captain announces, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm afraid I have some very bad

news. Our engines have ceased functioning and we will attempt an emergency landing. Luckily, I see an uncharted island

below us and we should be able to land on the beach. However, the odds are that we may never be rescued and will have to

live on the island for the rest of our lives!"

Thanks to the skill of the flight crew, the plane lands safely on the island.

An hour later Abe turns to his wife and asks, "Esther, did we pay our VISA and MasterCard bills yet?"

    "No, sweetheart," she responds.

Abe, still shaken from the crash landing, then asks, "Esther, did we pay our American Express card yet?"

"Oh, no! I'm sorry. I forgot to send the check," she says.

"One last thing Esther. Did you remember to send the estimate check to the IRS this quarter?" he asks.

"Oh, forgive me, Abe," begged Esther. "I didn't send that one, either."

Abe grabs her and gives her the biggest kiss in 40 years.

Esther pulls away and asks him, "What was that for?"

    Abe answers, "They'll find us!"

There have been so very many individuals who have contributed to the success of the 2013 Capital Classic,

‘Reunion Weekend’, a mere “Thank You!” is not nearly enough to convey how much I truly appreciate

everything you have done. [If I failed to list your name, please don’t take it that your efforts were not

noticed or appreciated, it only means that I forgot, I do that, please forgive me.]

To Everyone who gave me advice along the way, Thank You! You kept me on track.

To Everyone who gave ‘physical labor’ (selling, packing, unpacking, moving, hauling, schlepping, setting

up, breaking down, driving, and just “doing”), Thank You! There are many helping hands necessary in any

    event of this size.

To Everyone who gave their time – and this is each and every volunteer no matter how large or small a task

you performed – Thank You! for Time is the most precious gift to give.

From the bottom of my happy heart and shaggin’ feet, Thank You All! A Coordinator has the privilege of

keeping all of the spokes of the wheel turning at once, but it’s all of you who have done the actual turning,

making that wheel go ‘round. The generous and giving spirit of our club has been overwhelming; NVSC,

    You Rock!
