Havia certa vez uma grande árvorede galhos nodosos e bem abertos.Cada galho era coberto de folhas, e de cada

feixe de folhas saía um talo firme, quesegurava uma linda cereja.

Once there stood a large tree with

branches that reached up and out. Each

branch of this tree was covered in leaves,

and connected to each cluster of leaves wasa sturdy little stem, and each stem had a

sprightly little cherry on the end of it.



Mas se você fosse um pássaro voando porlá, e visse todas as cerejas na árvore, nemsaberia que eram cerejas. Sabe por quê?Porque uma cereja madura fica com a cor bem

vermelha, mas essas eram cerejinhas estavamcomeçando a crescer, e eram pequenas everdes.

Uma dessas cerejinhas se chamava Pia. Erabem verdinha no seu talo durinho. Gostava debalançar ao vento e brincar de dar cabeçadas

em suas coleguinhas cerejas.

But if you were a bird flying by, and you

looked at the tree, you wouldn’t have known

that this was a cherry tree. Do you know why?

Well, the color of a ripe cherry is a rich, deep

red, but these cherries were just starting togrow, and they were tiny and green.

There was one little cherry on this great big

tree that we’ll call Poe. Poe was a bright

green cherry and had a fresh little stem. He

liked to sway in the wind, and play with his

other little cherry friends.

estavam se tornandocerejas suculentas,vistosas e maduras. MasPia continuava verde!Ainda era pequenina! Piase preocupou: — Que

devo fazer? — lamentou-se.

One sunny day, Poe

looked in surprise at

some of his friends. They

had begun to turn red.They were all turning into

juicy, bright, ripe

cherries. But Poe was still

green and little! Poe was

worried. “What should I

do?” he cried.



Foi então que uma linda borboletapousou no galho de Pia. Olá! — disse aborboleta. — Por que está com este jeitotão tristonho? — É que... veja todos os meus amigos

ao redor. Todos parecem estaramadurecendo e ficando vermelhos. Masolhe para mim! Ainda estou dura e verde.Nunca serei uma cereja vermelha, vistosae bonita.

“Hello,” the butterfly said. “Why are you so glum?”

“Well,” Poe replied, “My friends are all getting

red and ripe. But I’m still hard and green. I might

never turn into a nice, bright, red cherry.”



— Sabe, — disse a borboleta — Voei ao redor detoda a árvore e vi todas as cerejas. Muitas já estãomaduras, mas muitas outras continuam verdes. Massabe o quê? — O quê? — perguntou Pia.

— Qualquer dia desses, quando menos esperar,estará madura. Só precisa ter um pouco de paciência! — Paciência? — perguntou Pia surpresa. — O

que é paciência? — Paciência significa esperar — respondeu a

borboleta. — Às vezes desejamos muito algo equeremos que aquilo aconteça imediatamente. Masnão acontece. Então, você tem que esperar.

The butterfly smiled. “Don’t worry,” she said. “I

have flown around this whole tree, and while a lot of the

cherries have turned red, there are many others that are still green. But do you know what?”“What?” Poe asked.

“One day, before you know it, you’ll turn into a great big, ripe, beautiful cherry. You just

have to have a little patience!”

“Patience?” Poe echoed. “What’s that?”

“Well,” said the butterfly, “patience means waiting. Sometimes there’s something that you

really want, and you wish it would happen right away. But it doesn’t. And so you have to wait.



— O segredo é fazer algo enquantoespera! Por que não se diverte sendo umacereja de vez? Divirta-se balançandoao vento! Divirta-se brincando de esconde-esconde com suas amigas, as folhas. Equando menos esperar, será exatamente oque há de ser. — É mesmo? — perguntou Pia. — Está

bem, vou experimentar!A borboleta se despediu de Pia e pôs-se

a voar.

“The secret is to do something else while

you’re waiting. For now, For now, why

don’t you have fun being a little green

cherry? Have fun swinging and waving in

the wind! Have fun playing hide and seek with your friends, the leaves. And before

you know it, you will be just what you’re

meant to be.”

“All right,” Poe said. “I’ll give it a try!”

The butterfly said farewell and then

fluttered away.



Os dias se passaram e um dia a borboletavoava perto da velha cerejeira. Ela pousou nomesmo galho onde antes conhecera Pia. Eadivinhem o que encontrou? Uma cerejagrande, redonda e vermelha!

— Oi! Olhe só para você! — disse aborboleta, encantada com o que via.

— Pois é! — disse Pia, abrindo um grandesorriso de cereja. — Estou tão feliz por você terme encorajado. Eu achava que nuncaamadureceria. Mas fui paciente. E, de repente...

estava madura!A borboleta apenas sorriu. — Eu sabia quevocê seria!

Several days later, the butterfly was flying bythe cherry tree again. She fluttered to the samebranch where she had first seen Poe. And guesswhat she saw? A great big, round, red cherry!

“ Look at you!” the butterfly said in delight.“I know!” Poe said, with a huge cherry

smile. “I’m so glad that you encouraged me. I thought I would never ripen. But I did my best to be patient, and before I knew it, I was red!”

The butterfly smiled, “I knew you would be!”
