columns of &The 'ioneer(( urging the foundation of a Universityat Lucknow" A little later Sir )arcourt !utler K"#"S"$" K"#"$"%

was a**ointed Lieutenant+,overnor of the United 'rovincesand his well+known interest in all matters under his jurisdictiones*ecially in matters educational gave fresh life and vigor tothe *ro*osal" The first ste* to bring the University into being

was taken when a ,eneral #ommittee of educationists and*ersons interested in university education a**ointed for the*ur*ose met in conference at ,overnment )ouse Lucknow on-ovember ./ .0.0" At this meeting Sir )arcourt !utler who

was in the chair outlined the *ro*osed scheme for the newuniversity"

A discussion followed and it was resolved

that Lucknow University should be aUnitary Teaching and ResidentialUniversity of the kind recommended bythe #alcutta University Mission .0.0

and should consist of 1aculties of Artsincluding 2riental Studies ScienceMedicine Law etc" A number of otherresolutions was also *assed and si3 sub+

committees were formed five of them to

consider 4uestions connected with the University and one toconsider the arrangements for *roviding $ntermediate%ducation" These sub+committees met during the months of

sub+committee to consider them and re*ort to the Senate" There*ort of the sub+committee was considered at ane3traordinary meeting of the Senate on August : .07/ atwhich the #hancellor *resided and the

scheme was generally a**roved" $n themeantime the difficulty of incor*orating

the Medical #ollege in the University hadbeen removed" 5uring the month of A*ril

This was a rich inheritance for the new+born University in .07/

both materially and intellectually and it brought with it also therichest of all heritages &a fine tradition of some fifty+five years

in the case of the #anning #ollege and some nine years in the

case of the King ,eorge(s Medical #ollege"& To this thegenerous talu4dars of 2udh added an endowment of nearlythirty lakhs" The su**ort from Sir )arcourt !utler(s

,overnment was strong and hearty" Since then the,overnment of the United 'rovinces has annually contributed asubstantial share towards the maintenance of the University"

$n the early days the #anning #ollege had no building of its

own and had to lead almost a *eri*atetic e3istence the sceneof its activity being *eriodically changed as one or other

building *roved unsuitable or insufficient" 5uring the firsttwelve years the #ollege was shifted from its original abode

the Aminuddaulah 'alace to a number of *laces one afteranother including the Lal !aradari" At last it was housed in its

own building at Kaisar !agh" The foundation stone of this newbuilding was laid by the

*o*ularly known as !adshah !agh originally a garden house of King -asiruddin )aidar and since the *acification of Avadh

lofty and handsome gate and one canal have survived as areminder of its *ast glories"

The im*lementation of the scheme of a new building was made

*ossible because of the s*ecial grant made by the ,overnmentthe *roceeds of the sale of the old building at Kaiserbagh and

munificence of Maharaja Sir !hagwati Singh of !alram*ur" The*lans of the building were entrusted to the well+known

architect" An im*ressive design in the $ndo+Saracenic style was*re*ared by Sir Swinton 6acob" The *lans of the building wereconsidered by the e3*erts to be so distinctive and elegant thatthey were subse4uently sent for demonstration at the
