Hi I’m Kiki! I’m one of the citizens of New
Forest. New Forest is a really big city, much
like your cities. But face it humans we New
Foresters are better than you New Yorkers.Hard for you to believe? We are just simple
people living in perfect harmony. But you!
You aren’t even happy with all those big,
gray, leafless trees you live in. Neither are you happy gettingtransported in those colorful pods. You resort to cutting down my
brethren for your own personal, selfish, outrageous reasons.
Anyways keeping all enmity and differences aside, I Kiki, the small little
rosebush from Rose Street, New Forest city will take you humans on aguided tour through our city and the rest of our clean and green (not
anymore thanks to you) plant world.

How do you identify a tree?
• You can often identify atree just from it’s shape. The wide dome of the
English oak may bedistinguishable even at adistance. But shapes canget distorted by exposureto the wind, heavy rainfall
or tampering with when itwas a sapling. In suchcases one can identify byit’s leaves, bark, flowers,or fruits.

How tall is the tallest tree?
• The giant sequoia trees of California are the world’slargest living things. One
called General Sherman is83 meters tall and over 11meters thick- as wide as 4trucks side by side. Itcontains enough wood to
make 40 houses- or 5000million match sticks.
• Second tallest is the giantredwood, which is alsofrom California.

I’ll tell you what it’s like in a
forest !A lush green canopy of leaves in the tropics, an array of
bright colors, in autumn, in the coniferous forest andmuch more! Sometimes when you enter a forest it is
pitch dark even in broad daylight. That is actuallybecause all the branches and leaves twirl up togetherin order to get more sunlight and in the process thereis hardly any light that penetrates through to thefloor.
The quiet forest reveals little of the teeming life withinit. A diverse community- songbirds, mammals, insects seedlings, wildflowers- and climate, soil andwater forms a complex eco system

What is the Difference
Between a Forest and a Jungle?• Jungles are bigger
than forests. Alsomore species of animals live in junglesthan forests.
• A jungle is a forest intropical areas. Atropical forest.
• A forest is a largeclump of trees.

A thick tangled mass oftropical vegetation ispopularly called a jungle. Butthere is little undergrowth onthe floor of the forest’sinterior. The tree’s continuousleafy crowns that keep thesunlight from reaching the
forest floor whereas in the jungle the light can reach theground. Jungles grow at theoutskirts of the rainforests.Competition for sunlight
results in a mass of palms, vines, orchids and otherplants. It is easy to see how arainforest, viewed from the
outside could be thought of asan impenetrable jungle.

Woodland is anothername for a forest. Some
people use the term todescribe a forest withan open canopy. Thecanopy is the highestlayer of foliage in a
forest. It is made up ofthe crowns or tops oftrees.
An open canopy allows
full sunlight to enter. Aclosed canopy, instead, keeps most of thesunlight from reaching
ground

How do trees change withthe Seasons?
Trees especially hardwoods undergo manychanges over the course of the year.
These changes are adaptations to meet
the tree's needs and in response to theharshness
of the climate.

Have you heard about
sleeping trees?• During the winter , the temperaturedrops and the sun rides low on the
horizon. Both the ground and waterlie frozen. The broadleaf treesstand bare. The trees don't grow
or reproduce. They are dormant.

When do you think that buds appear on trees? Inthe spring ? Or maybe at the end of winter ?
Well, trees actually form their buds during thesummer , usually in August! Since trees are dormantduring the winter , they don't have the energy togrow structures that are that small and complex!Buds aren't very apparent in the fall andthroughout the entire winter . In the spring ,however, they swell and are ready to open.
WHEN DO BUDS APPEAR ONTREES?

HOW DOES A TREE LIKE
SPRING?• In the spring , the temperatureincreases, melting off the snow.
There's plenty of water in theground and the sun shines brightly. It's a time of bounty that trees
put to good use to develop, grow, and produce flowers and leaves.

What do leaves look like in
spring?• Leaves appear on trees in the spring .
They burst out of buds in which they
have remained dormant all winter long.Sunlight triggers the bud break. In thespring , the sun gets brighter andbrighter, and the days longer. Buds
contain a kind of cell that is sensitive tolight. It detects when there is enoughdaylight for the leaves to survive.

DID YOU KNOW THAT
TREES CAN STORE FOOD?
• Summer brings hot, sunny weather, but it's often a time of drought.Trees take this time to storereserves using photosynthesis to
stabilize the new tissue that hasdeveloped.

WHAT IS THE FALL LIKE?
• When fall comes around, fruit ripens and treesstart preparing for the arrival of winter . Daysgrow shorter and the sun loses some of itsstrength. Leaves can no longer carry outphotosynthesis and start to display their festivefall colors. When winter arrives, trees becomedormant and the cycle begins again. Life can be
pretty tough on a tree! A tree's annual rings reveal the events that have occurred in ourenvironment.

HOW DO LEAVES CHANGE
COLOR?• Did you ever wonder what makes leaves
change color in the fall?
• As the days get shorter, the sap in thetrees flows more slowly, which affectsthe upper branches first. The leaves atthe top of the tree, which get more
sunlight, mature faster and completetheir life cycle before the leaves furtherdown the tree.

Protecting nature’s treasure
trove!• Evergreen tropical rainforests are nature’s powerhouses.
Their dense canopies shelter more than half of the world’s
plant and animal species. Vital to the health of our planet, rainforests prevent soil erosion and keep our air clean byrecycling greenhouse gases. Over the last century much of the world’s rainforests have been cut down.Rainforest cover is in north Australia, Asia, Africa, Madagascar,
South And Central America and some Caribbean islands. They cover only 2% of the world’s land surface.Tragically, this irreplaceable asset continues to disappear at the rate of 2000 trees every single minute. The clock isticking.
