A PLACE TO CREATE - The Creation...

2
Our goal is to promote positive pathways through exposure to creative technology industries. The Creation Room provides a free and open environment for people to discover and create technology related ideas and opportunities. The Room provides access to on-line resources and exposure to technology and social innovators. What is The Creation Room? The Creation Room (The Room) is a trial social good initiative created by Adroit Creations in partnership with Promapp and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Environment. It is an open resource for residents of the Hauraki area interested in exploring the creative technology industry. The Creation Room offers individuals a relaxed, semi-structured space to learn and progress at their own pace. Opportunities include learning to write code, understanding programming, developing/designing websites, starting blogs, setting up small businesses online, pitching ideas and learning to develop software. Users have access to skilled and experienced staff in a professional office environment. Users are self-motivated and no burdens or expectations are placed on users. The Room is set up with computer equipment and software donated by Adroit and its partners. Dedicated hosting, development and systems are available. The Room is supported as part of the Adroit main office and will continue to scale with the growth of Adroit. This structure allows The Room to piggyback on Adroit infrastructure with minimal costs. The Room is set up to maximise the ‘theory of weak ties’. This theory states that most innovation and creativity comes from opportunities and people outside of an individual’s regular social context. A number of residents in the Hauraki District may benefit from exposure to the options technology provides. The Room is intended to provide a stepping stone and support to start people on a pathway in the creative technology industry. To increase the impact in the community, the Room is also hoping to host a series of events. These semi- formal events will present people within the creative tech sector to share expertise and advice. Who can use the room? The Room is open to all locals within the Hauraki Region and in particular people residing around the Paeroa and Karangahake Gorge areas. Regardless of age or formal education provided people have an understanding of software and computers they can use the Room. All users must agree to a code of conduct governing acceptable behaviour. We want to work with youThe success of The Room is reliant on its support from the local community. We believe that by working together we can provide individuals’ in our community with exposure to pathways they might otherwise not have access to. We believe exciting things can happen when people within our community are exposed to circles outside of their daily norm. The Room is intended to begin in March 2016 and run for a 24-month trial period with an evaluation at six and 12-months.
