Dan Lash, CFP®, AIF® President’s Message
Can you believe it’s October already? I’m looking forward to enjoying the cooler weather, the changing foliage, and
the variety of fall festivals that make our area so enjoyable this time of year. FPA NCA also has some great October
events planned, as well as a fantastic way for you to give back to the community...
On October 14, we will host our next luncheon program at Westwood Country Club in Vienna, VA, featuring Joe
Richardson of Jefferson National. Joe will present “The Great Wealth Transfer, Shifting Assets from Baby Boomers
to Millennials.” Joe will share his years of experience working with advisors to explain the opportunities and
complexities of shifting assets from one generation to another. In addition to our guest speaker, we will also have a
panel discussion on succession planning. The panel will consist of advisors who have bought and sold a practice,
using both internal and external succession plans. This will be a great way to gain some helpful ideas directly from
your own peers on how to structure your succession plan, so be sure to register for this event at
www.fpanca.org/events.
On October 20, FPA NCA will host our first Octoberfest from 5-7pm at Tyson’s Biergarten! This will be our first
event at this new Tyson’s hot spot, and should be a great time with beer from around the world and traditional German
food. Beers and brats, what could be better than that? “Prost!”

“Lessons Learned/Wisdom Shared: A Look at Succession Planning Strategies”
As the discussion about succession planning becomes not just a business issue but a compliance consideration, it’s
time for FPA-NCA to hear from its own members about some of the paths that both younger and older advisors
have taken in solving for one of the great challenges of our profession.
Join us for a lively discussion, moderated by Lisa Kirchenbauer, CFP®, RLP®, CeFT™ and panelists Rose
Price, CFP®, AIF® (VLP Financial Advisors), Ryan Fleming, CFP® (Armstrong, Fleming & Moore), Emily
Chiang, CFP®, and Brian Jones, CFP® (CJM Wealth Advisors), as they share their wisdom. What worked?
What wouldn’t they do again? What was unexpected? What would they do now? Don’t miss this wealth of
wisdom that we can all benefit from!
Joe Richardson: Regional Director for Jefferson National - Presenting The Great Wealth Transfer
Addressing the Great Wealth Transfer: According to a recent Accenture study, Americans will experience a
massive transfer of assets. An estimated $30 trillion from Baby Boomers to Millennials will shift in what is being
termed as “The Great Wealth Transfer.” How will current financial advisors help clients address this shift of assets
– maximizing the goals of their current clients and the children of their current clients?

CFP® Professionals Sought as Volunteers at Metro Financial Planning Day on October 22, 2016
Dear Colleague,
The Financial Planning Association of the National Capital Area Chapter invites local CFP® professionals to join us in helping Metro Washington area residents experience the benefits of financial planning. The Financial Planning Day concept is
simple – CFP® professionals will volunteer to meet one-on-one with consumers to offer personalized financial planning information on a pro bono basis. The event will also feature financial planners presenting educational workshops on key
financial planning topics.
The event is being organized by the Financial Planning Association of the National Capital Area Chapter as part of the
national Financial Planning Days initiative in partnership with CFP Board, Financial Planning Association, the Foundation for Financial Planning and AARP Virginia. Details are:
Metro Washington Financial Planning Day
Saturday, October 22, 2016, 10:00 to 4:00 PM
George Mason University, Founders Hall
3351 Fairfax Drive, Arlington, VA 22201
The benefits are plentiful – providing the public with the practical financial information they need and increasing
recognition of the value of financial planning in the Metro Washington community. We expect Financial Planning Day to generate high levels of attendance and appreciation due to the diverse demographics in the area and continued uncertain
economic landscape.

CFP® professionals in good standing with CFP Board. Seats will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Volunteers
must watch a 50-minute bootcamp video before participating (see http://financialplanningdays.org/volunteers).
A complimentary breakfast and lunch will be provided for volunteers. Metered street parking is available, with additional parking available in an underground parking lot at GMU for $8 for the day. Parking costs will be at everyone’s own
expense.

From the Programs Committee!
Melissa Sotudeh and Lisa Kirchenbauer
In November:
Rolf Kelly, CFA, Portfolio Manager and Managing Director, Thornburg Investment Management will
present "ESG vs. SRI - Bridging the Performance Gap". Thornburg has expertise in the ESG (Environment,
Social, and Governance) style of investing. In the past, SRI (Socially Responsible Investing) has held much
promise but, many times, has failed to deliver satisfying results to investors. In our eyes, ESG represents an
improvement over the SRI approach. (November Luncheon)
Hannah Ubl, Millennial and Generational Expert, thrives on studying what motivates, forms and challenges
her complex generation. Her passion and mission is to use a healthy blend of stories and stats to help people
gain a deeper understanding of one another. Her research has unearthed valuable tips and actionable
solutions for multi-generational workplaces, and key strategies for marketing and reaching more
generationally diverse client bases. (November Luncheon)
It’s going to be a great lunch that you won’t want to miss! Look for more details soon.
Join us on Tuesday, November 15 for a study group! All Chapter Members Invited

NEW PLANNER SEARCH ON ONE FPA WEBSITE!
What is FPA PlannerSearch®?
FPA PlannerSearch® is a website that not only provides educational content to consumers on personal financial matters,
but also helps them find and engage CFP® professionals in their area. Through robust search functionality, consumers who
are looking for financial planning guidance and support can search for CFP® professionals who can help.
What role does FPA PlannerSearch® play for me?
The site was constructed to increase the online visibility of CFP® professionals who are also members of FPA. By using
best practices in Search Engine Optimization (SEO), social sharing, and structured data, the site increases the likelihood of
CFP® members of FPA being found online through Google searches. By way of this increased visibility new business
opportunities may emerge.
Who is able to participate in FPA PlannerSearch®?
In order to participate, you must be an FPA member in good standing and a CFP® professional. Members are not
automatically added to the platform, they must opt in. To opt in, please contact the FPA Member Engagement Team at
[email protected]. You can also opt-in online by visiting www.onefpa.org/business-
success/Pages/PlannerSearch.
Why has the platform been changed/improved?
In an increasingly competitive digital landscape, CFP® professionals need to be able to be found online. The changes we
have made to the architecture of the site and search functionality will now better support our members by providing more
visibility online which will lead to new business growth opportunities.
What, specifically, has been done to improve the platform?
As we set out on redeveloping the site and search tool, we did so with three distinct goals:
First was to increase planner findability. The new website’s foundation is built from the perspective of traffic
acquisition. Best practices of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), social sharing, and structured data will drive the
architecture of the website so members can be found more often and in more places across the web.
Second was to improve usability. User experience is paramount to findability and engagement. Consumers will enjoy a
streamlined experience and be able to easily accomplish their goal of researching, contacting, and partnering with a
financial planner that meets their unique individual needs.
Third was to expand accessibility. Users seeking to find a financial planner from their desktop, tablet, or smartphone will
be treated to a seamless user experience at their convenience. This will drive increased traffic, interactions, client leads and
– ultimately – help members grow their businesses.
What are some of the new features?
There are a couple new features that you should definitely pay attention to:
Now every planner has a unique URL path to their profile on FPA PlannerSearch®. That means you can share your
profile on the site with anyone by simply providing the URL. It is advisable to provide a link to your profile on
your website, blog, and any other way you can be found online.
Your profile now has a “My Links” section where you can share other places where you are found online. You can
share links to recent media appearances, news items where you appear, personal blog posts, and much more. This
section in particular is very important to helping drive SEO for your profile so be sure to keep it up to date with
your latest links!
Continued on next page
FPA National Capital Area Newsletter Page 11 October 2016
Continued from previous page
Your profile also has a “Brochures” section where you can provide brochures and other content specific to your
business.
Also, when a consumer searches for a planner, they will be provided an interactive map where they can view CFP®
professionals within proximity to them. So just because someone may be viewing another planner from your
immediate area, they will now be able to quickly check out your profile as well.
How do I view/edit my profile on the platform?
Updating your profile is the same as the previous iteration of FPA PlannerSearch®. Simply log in to OneFPA.org and click
on “My Profile.” Information that is populated on FPA PlannerSearch® will be identified as such. There is also a
“PlannerSearch” tab on “My Profile” where you can populate information for the “My Links” and “Brochures” sections.
As always, you can get assistance by contacting a member of the FPA Member Engagement Team at
How do I get any new client leads?
The process is the same as before. You will get an email with an alert that a consumer is interested in you and your services.
You will then login to OneFPA.org and click on the “My Leads” tab at the top of the page to view your leads and contact
them.
What are the specifications for my profile picture?
To ensure your profile picture looks as good as possible, please only use a photo that is in JPEG or PNG format and
approximately 1000 pixels by 1000 pixels. We recommend that the body and head is centered in the image and not cropped
too closely, with a comfortable amount of spacing around the edges.
What are the specifications for the images I want to associate with my brochures in the “Brochures” section?
Images can be in either JPEG or PNG format and should be 50 pixels by 50 pixels. If your image exceeds this, it will
automatically be scaled to fit.
What are the specifications for the images I want to associate with my links in the “My Links” section?
Images can be in either JPEG or PNG format and should be 60 pixels by 60 pixels. If your image exceeds this, it will
automatically be scaled to fit.
