On October 11, Pope Benedict XVI issued an Apostolic Letter, Porta Fidei, and declared October 11, 2012 to November 24, 2013 a Year of Faith. The first day of the Year of Faith, was the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II) and the 20th anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. For the next year, we are asked to study and reflect on the documents of Vatican II and the catechism to further understand and enhance our knowledge of our Faith.

Pope Benedict describes this conversion as opening the Door of Faith. Your Door of Faith is opened at your baptism. This year, the Pope is asking you to “open it again”, walk through it and rediscover and renew your relationship with Christ and the Church.

There are many opportunities available at Saint Louis to deepen your faith from Bible study to Catechism study to weekly Adult Religious Education sessions. Visit our website at www.stlouisparish.org to review the current offerings.

Advent Penance Service

“Make straight the way of the Lord!”

What separates you from the joy and fullness of life that Jesus longs to give you? Now is the acceptable time. Do not be afraid. Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Jesus is waiting to extend to you his greatest Christmas gift. Join the other parishes in Western Howard County for the Regional Reconciliation Service here at St. Louis, Tuesday, December 11, at 7:00 pm.

Confession is available every Saturday from 3:00 pm to 3:55 pm and from 5:00 pm to 5:25 pm. You may also call Monsignor Luca or Fr. Lanoue for an appointment.

Advent series with Fr. Marc LanoueAssociate Pastor, Fr. Marc Lanoue is hosting a series of discussions about Reconciliation during Advent

December 4 - Confession: History and its role in our spiritual growth

December 12 - What makes us do the things that we do?

December 18 - The help that children offer adults through Confessions.

Come to one or all three. They will be held in the Pastoral Center Social Hall and will begin at 7:00 pm.

Advent WreathThe progressive lighting of the four candles symbolizes the hope and expectation of the Lord’s coming. Each weekend Mass we will light the wreath with the help of individuals and families. Come to the Hospitality Table to sign up for a Mass —there are 28 from which to choose!

Advent Poor Box Collections During Advent, our Poor Box Collections will support the following ministries:

First Sunday of Advent – Needy Family Fund. This is a fund to support organizations in our local community which provide goods and services to individuals and families in need.

Second Sunday of Advent – FISH of Howard County. FISH provides emergency financial assistance and a food pantry to local residents. Jesus reminds us that whenever we reach out to the least among us, we reach out to him.

Third Sunday of Advent – Our Parish Family Fund. We cannot forget our own parish family members. This Fund helps parishioners who find themselves in difficult situations.

Fourth Sunday of Advent – Catholic Relief Services. CRS is the arm of the US Bishops for relief throughout the world. When disaster strikes, CRS is one of the first on the scene.

A great beginning to the school year

8 Spirit of St. Louis - December 2012

The 2012-2013 school year has been filled with new and exciting initiatives for our students and wonderful things to celebrate! This year we have expanded our STEM program (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), to weave the principles of STEM education and problem-based inquiry into all aspects of our curriculum. We are excited by our partnership with the University of Maryland and the National Science Foundation that has allowed us to offer an after-school CyberSTEM program during which students engage in computer-based STEM activities with an emphasis on cryptology and digital

forensics. The students are engaged and excited to be learning these new-age skills!

Our students have also had some wonderful STEM-related opportunities this year. It was a very exciting day as our students attended the Space Academy at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, and learned about the Radiation Belt Storm Probe (RBSP) and the Van Allen radiation belts that surround our planet from the astronauts and engineers who actually worked on these sophisticated projects. Our 6th grade girls also had an exciting day as they traveled to the University of Maryland for the annual Cool Careers for Girls summit, and were introduced to potential careers in cyber security, information assurance and other STEM career paths.

Sixth grade students take a “hands-on” approach to learning at the Annual Cool Careers for Girls Summit at the University of Maryland.

Future astronauts proudly don their white suits after a day in the lab at APL’s Space Academy.

Congratulations to our Math Team! Zoe Kreisel, Ben Brotzman, Jordan Woo, Anthony DelBuono, Timothy Dragonette and Grace Sullivan. A special thanks and congratulations to our 8th grade math teacher, Mrs. Eileen Markert, for doing such a great job of preparing our students and leading the way!

1st Place Math Team Recently, two of our “teams” did a spectacular job representing SLS! Our 8th grade Math students triumphed for the 2nd straight year as they took 1st place out of 14 schools in the 39th Annual Good counsel High School Mathematics contest! Our team members competed against 84 other students, and three of our students finished in the top 10! Not only that, but our It’s Academic Team is gearing up for a very strong showing on the tournament circuit this year. The team, which is split into smaller teams of 3 or 4 students for tournament play, will compete against other schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore and Washington. They began their season by placing in 1st, 2nd and 4th at their first tournament against 14 teams from 3 other schools! Way to go SLS!

The St. Louis Student council is off to a roaring start this year, led by President Julia Habiger, Vice President Kevin Key, Secretary Kayla Kostelec, and Treasurer Mary Kate Sisk. They began the year by creating a special fund called the Mustard Seed Fund, named after the proverb in Matthew 17:20. The first $100 of every Student Council fundraiser is deposited into this fund and will be used to help the needy in the community who need last minute

or emergency assistance. The students also raised money for Breast Cancer research, purchased hand bells for the new Bell Choir at Sisters Academy in Baltimore, and donated to the Jingle Bell Race for Arthritis research. Just a few weeks ago, our students participated in a favorite SLS tradition – Service Day – assisting parishioners with fall yard clean-up and other household chores. Stay tuned for more service activities in December and the rest of the year!

Dancing for Hurricane reliefCongratulations to 7th grader, Brooke Sessler, who recently danced a solo and performed in several other dances at a fundraiser held by the Ballet Royale Institute of Maryland to benefit the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Fund. State Senator Allan Kittleman and Delegate Guy Guzzone were among the distinguished guests in attendance who enjoyed Brooke’s performance. We are so proud of Brooke for sharing her extraordinary talents to support such an important cause!
