This friendly group is run by volunteers and supported by a SureStart worker. There’s a wide range of activities on offer, including messy play and outdoor play.

Sign and Rhyme GroupRiverside Children’s Centre
This is a fun, informal group which incorporates singing and signing to encourage and support children’s language development. Each session lasts for 30 minutes.
Drop-in – no booking necessary Suitable for children aged 3 to 18 months Monday morning – 10.30am to 11am or 11.15am to 11.45am
Music GroupRiverside Children’s Centre
A relaxed and informal group which allows you and your child to enjoy singing simple songs and nursery rhymes with other families. Children can enjoy playing instruments and using the scarves to accompany their favourite songs. No musical skills required, just come along and have fun!

Stay and Play at NorthgatePrince of Wales Youth Club, Military Road
Held in a sports hall, this large group caters for everyone. There’s lots of room for active children to let off some steam on the play equipment, ride-on toys and ball pit. We also have quiet corners for babies and a relaxing book corner.

This relaxed group is a great way for carers and children to socialise and make new friends. The sessions have planned activities such as messy play, sensory play, water and creative play for the children and themed sessions for the parents/carers, such as dental health, weaning, basic child safety advice and much more.

Breastfeeding GroupRiverside Children’s Centre
Come along with your baby to this relaxed breastfeeding and mixed feeding group. Meet other mums and receive support for feeding and weaning from our team of trained breastfeeding peer support volunteers. Refreshments and a light snack will be available.
Drop-in – no booking necessary Suitable for pregnant, breastfeeding and mixed feeding mums Tuesday mornings – 10.30am to 1pm first hour for expectant mums and parents with babies less than three months old after that all welcome.
Baby Massage CourseA relaxing four week course for you and your baby. Baby massage helps you to bond with your baby and has added benefits like improved sleeping and digestion. You will also have the chance to make new friends with other new parents.
You are required to book a place (see booking form) and you will need to bring a towel.

Courses for parents/carersSolihull Positive Parenting CourseThis is a 10 week course exploring sensitive parenting styles, communication, having fun together and general behaviour issues. A crèche is provided for your children throughout the duration of the course.

Your Future, Your ChoicesA confidence boosting course specially designed for parents thinking of returning to education or training. This course identifies barriers and ways to overcome them. You explore your own skills and how they are valuable in the workplace. Workshops include CV building and interviews and how to survive them. The course also offers practical help in accessing training, English and maths courses and volunteering. A crèche is provided. Adult English and MathsOur on-going programme of English and maths courses, delivered by Kent Adult Education, will help you to improve you’re your English and maths skills and increase your confidence in everyday situations including helping your children with their learning and development. You will have the opportunity to gain an accreditation which can go on your CV and help you to move on to further training or employment. A crèche is provided. is provided. Digital AgeIf you have little or no IT experience and would like to gain confidence in using computers and the latest technology, then this is the training for you!
A certified eight week computer course covering

Parent PioneersThis course is specially designed for anyone who is interested in volunteering in a Children’s Centre and will give you the knowledge and confidence to become a Children’s centre volunteer. Topics covered include your skills and what you have to bring as well as what volunteering can give you, managing group dynamics, health and safety, confidentially and safeguarding children. Please contact Nikki Martin if you would like a place on our next course (or complete and return the booking form).
VolunteeringWe have lots of opportunities for volunteers at the Riverside Children’s Centre. Volunteer group assistants support our work in the Stay and Play groups and in our Music group. We have crèche support volunteers, administration and reception volunteers and Operational Board Volunteers who come to our monthly meetings to help make key decisions about the Children’s Centre and the services that we provide. We also have an occasional vacancy “Buddy Up” for parents to support new families into groups that they already attend. Please contact Nikki Martin or ask at reception for an application form for any vacancies.

Other services Freedom ProgrammeDomestic abuse can be behaviour that is physically, sexually and psychologically abusive and is directed by one partner (or ex-partner) against another.
This is a 12 week course with a crèche provided.

Health Visitor ClinicCome along to get your baby weighed and have a chat with a Health Visitor. This clinic also provides a self weigh service. Don’t forget to bring your child’s red book!
Every Thursday 1pm to 3pm at Riverside Children’s Centre
Free childcare for your two year oldYour two year old could get up to 15 hours of free childcare each week (term time only). Funded by the government, the scheme is for looked after children and parents who receive certain benefits. If your child is currently two years old, or approaching their second birthday, this could apply to you.

Yaps Group (Young Active Parents)This is a small relaxed and fun group for parents and parents to be aged 19 or under. The session begins with a healthy lunch and parents are able to take part in workshops covering a wide range of subjects including play, early development, pregnancy and much more. Health visitors and other agencies often visit the group to provide additional support and advice for parents.

Multi-Sensory Room at Riverside Children’s CentreOur multi-sensory room has a cushioned space, light tubes, projector and a sound activated light tube. You will need a short training session on how to use the equipment beforehand so just ask at reception.
Little Library at Riverside Children’s CentreIn the main foyer you can come along anytime and choose books for you and your child to enjoy together. We also have a variety of books on a range of parenting topics such as health, pregnancy, weaning, breastfeeding, early education and many more.
Health Trainer – Appointments at Riverside Children’s CentreAn opportunity to have one to one support to help you improve your health. Whether it’s stopping smoking, losing weight, drug and alcohol use or any other health issue, the health trainer can support and encourage you to reach your goals and provide you with the information you need. Suitable for anyone who wants to improve their health or wellbeing.

Home Safety ChecksWant to prevent accidents in the home. We can visit you and advise you about common risks and hazards to children in the home. We will leave you with a free home safety pack that contains some useful items and lots of great information about accident prevention.
