True or False? No one really knowswho you are on the

Internet, so it is ok tosay whatever you want.

False: Cyber bullying is apunishable crime in moststates & there are manyways to identify who iscontacting you over theInternet.

A good rule to live by:

If you would not talk to theperson on the street, whytalk to them in cyber-space?

Giving out personal info, school or social info canlead predators right to you.

Actions for

Parents & StudentsTo reduce the chance of Online Stalking andCyber Bullying, talk to your child about thefollowing:

• Avoiding provocative user names (yours and theirs)

• Avoiding private chats, sexual conversations

• Being suspicious if questions become personal orthey are asked to exchange pictures or gifts

• Chatters wanting the relationship to be kept secretor becoming angry if you want to end it

• Asking to meet or showing up unexpectedly

What to do if it happens:

• Cyber-stalking-you are online- tell them you have ascreen shot to report them and log off

• Cyber-bullying-respond assertively – no foullanguage – again advise them that you are saving ascreen shot to report them and log off. In thefuture do not open emails from the person, takescreen shots from web sites such as MySpace andkeep a log of the bullying behavior

• Use the chat room features for quick response(block, report user ID)

• Create a list of all your user IDs, a history of therelationship/ communications, do not delete any ofthe user accounts (need the history)

• Report it to someone – parent, teacher, police, another parent –talk to an adult. Do not allow thebehavior to continue or go unchecked – we haveguidelines to address Internet infractions and locallaw enforcement may get involved.
