PROGRAMME OVERVIEWThe MSc in Innovation, Commercialisation and Entrepreneurship (ICE) is a one-year taught multidisciplinary masters that provides graduates with an integrated skill set in the theory and practice of innovation, technology commercialisation and entrepreneurship.

This Masters programme has been developed to meet the emerging opportunities presented by new technologies, growth in knowledge-based and service-based sectors, globalisation and the increased focus on outsourcing by traditional enterprise. The MSc (ICE) programme compels graduates to think about creating and growing entrepreneurial ventures, both within existing organisations and as high-potential start-ups.

The programme is delivered by a multidisciplinary team of academics from the disciplines of Accounting, Finance and Information Systems, Law, Management and Marketing within UCC. The programme is delivered in partnership with entrepreneurs,

development agencies and industry professionals.

COURSE STRUCTURE “Entrepreneurship is the pursuit of opportunity beyond the resources you currently control.” Howard Stevenson, Harvard Business School.

This programme will run over 12 months, consisting of 60 ECTS credits of taught modules delivered by departments within the College of Business and Law, together with an additional 30 ECTS credit research project, where students apply their knowledge to develop a technology-based business plan.

HOW WILL THIS DEGREE IMPROVE MY CAREER PROSPECTS?The MSc (ICE) programme provides science and technology graduates with a solid foundation in the commercial practices of innovation and business graduates with first hand experience of the technology commercialisation lifecycle. Potential careers paths may include:

Engaging in entrepreneurial venturing and business start-up. Operating within multinational organisations as members of their Innovation Management Team. Operating within the management team of indigenous organisations (primarily SME in nature). Entry into University Technology Transfer Offices, Venture Capital community or Government

support agencies.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTSEntry to the M.Sc. programme is competitive. Successful candidates would normally be expected to hold a Second Class Honours Grade 1 primary degree in a Science or Technology discipline.

However consideration may also be given to candidates from other backgrounds on the basis of their suitability for the programme. Such candidates would be expected to hold either;

A Second Class Honours Grade 1 Honours degree from a Business or relevant Social Sciences/Humanities discipline.

A Second Class Honours Grade 2 Honours primary degree in a Science, Engineering or Technology discipline.

A minimum of three years relevant professional experience.

Decisions regarding student eligibility will be made by the Programme Directors on the basis of their application; some candidates may be required to attend for interview. Full entry requirements are available on the programme webpage.

Appreciation of the regulatory and governance environment relating to business in Ireland.

Applying the concepts, techniques and frameworks of innovation management in a global context.

ACCELERATING A TECHNOLOGY BUSINESS

Assessing strategies for scaling and accelerating a technology business.

INNOVATION PROJECT

Practical application of programme learning to bringing an innovative product, process or service nearer to market. This project is supervised by both academic and business mentors. The final report is presented to a panel of academics and potential investors.
