We are holding our annual Open Day for prospective parents next week at 9:00 in the PMPR. If you know of any parents who may be interested in bringing their children to OSC, please do contact them and let them know about this event. If they can‟t come at this time, I am always ready to give a personal tour for interested families. Americans celebrate Thanksgiving Day this week, and once again this year, I am so grateful for this school and the community spirit we have among us. I can‟t think of a better learning environment for children and for their parents. We have a wonderful teaching and support staff, a hard working and supportive PTA, and a highly functioning Board. Thanks to all of you for the part you play in making our school the outstanding place that it is. Areta Williams Head of School [email protected]

The Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday 18th January 2014 at 1.00 p.m. at the school. Our Articles of Association require that a minimum of three Directors either resign or re-present themselves for election at each Annual General Meeting, and in compliance with this, Ms Fazna Ahmed, Mr Colin Nelson, and I, will be standing for re-election whilst Mr Rick DeRousse will be standing for election. Mr Adam Hyun-Sack and Mr Colin Pawley who were co-opted to the Board will be offering themselves for election. Other members may stand for election if they so wish. Nominations must be presented to the school on or before Saturday 28 December 2013. Please note that this is during the school vacation so it would be more prudent to send the nomination by December 13, 2013, which is the last day of school before the holidays. Secondary School Principal

As we close the month of November, the secondary school has been busy on many fronts. We have had several exciting field trips this week including a Grade 6 excursion to the Goethe Institute to see a mathematics exhibition. They certainly came back excited about their experiences! Grade 8 went to Galle on Friday to learn about the intertidal and coastline habitats of the West coast and to collect data on shoreline biodiversity. Last Friday, the Grade 11 students did a small excursion around the OSC neighbourhood to explore „street culture‟ to inform their upcoming unit. The Arts continue to be a real highlight this year. On Wednesday, the Grade 12 Theatre students performed Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party. I can tell you that it was absurd! - but only in the very best way. Our Grade 12 students really impressed with excellent acting in a really funny production. Thursday and Friday saw the Middle School performances of Wolf Boy. It was definitely a civilizing experience. Congratulations to Ms. Jackson and to all students involved. Excellent work! Of course, next week we have some much anticipated events coming up as well. Early in the week, we send off our travelling Girls‟ Basketball and Boys‟ Football teams who are going to compete in Dhaka and Muscat. Good luck Geckos! On Wednesday, we start the day with our annual „Open Day‟ to welcome prospective families. At the end of the day, we will have the chance to attend the much-anticipated Gala concert. This will be the first full performance since we launched our new instructional music programme. Be sure to come to this event, you won‟t want to miss it. Coming up we will be sending a group of Grade 8 „Reef Keepers‟ to Hikkaduwa to promote reef conservation as part of their Community Service programme. Departing Students: We understand that some students may be departing OSC at the end of the semester. You will be missed! If you need transcripts, school profiles or final grade reports we can give you 6 originals. If you should need more than 6 we must charge 1,000 SL.Rs. per item. We must receive the request for the number of copies by December 9th 2013 in order to receive the items by December 13th. Our office will be closed from December 14th to January 5th. We will be unable to process any requests during this time.

Finally, as a reminder, the school coffee shop is open for Grade 12 students only during their break or after school. Week without Walls Update: Next week we will be briefing secondary students on details about the Week Without Walls programme that is scheduled for January 27th-31st 1014. Parents will be receiving copies of letters, medical forms, risk assessment and itineraries from their children at the end of next week. For students and teachers alike, the Week Without Walls programmes offer an exciting opportunity for experiential learning tied to curriculum goals. The goals of the WWW programme are the following:

Fulfill mission statement of developing the whole person within a safe environment.

Expose students to our host country Sri Lanka‟s culture and environment.

Enable opportunities for service learning and outdoor education.

Support and strengthen existing secondary curriculum (including the CAS programme) for the

benefit of student learning. For students involved in SAISA, the permissions and informational forms will be keep aside and will also be kept electronically on Managebac. In early January there will be skills preparations at school (biking, kayaking, painting etc.), and information sessions for parents about the trips. As per the calendar, students will embark on the WWW during the last week of the month (27-31st January). Once again we are planning a WWW Exhibition, which has been tentatively scheduled for Friday February 21st. Further information on this reflective culmination will follow in the coming newsletters. Primary School Principal

As we venture into the last few weeks of school, we want to highlight yet another Learner Profile for our students and the OSC community. For the remainder of the semester, the new focus will be on the Inquirer. Students who are INQUIRERS are curious about the world. They can conduct research independently. They love learning and discovering new things and will carry this love of learning with them throughout life. How can parents help to develop students who are Inquirers at home?

Encourage areas of your child‟s interest by visiting

the library to borrow books that explore these topics.

Develop an understanding of the Internet. Work with

your son or daughter when the Internet is being used and try to instill the understanding that some Internet sites are not reputable.

Model being an inquirer. Admit when you don‟t know

the answer to a problem or a question and seek out answers in front of your child.

Teaching students to be inquirers is fundamental to the PYP philosophy. The more we model this behaviour, the more likely students will have a go themselves. Dress Code I would encourage you all to monitor what your children are wearing to school, as a number of students have been spotted out of dress code. The biggest offenders in primary are the girls in their “short” shorts, which seem to be getting shorter! Please refer to the dress code below to help support your parenting:

We ask that students wear clothing that:

is comfortable

is not immodest or revealing

does not display rude words or disrespectful

messages or symbols

shirts must cover the shoulders – tank tops or

sundresses are not permitted (both primary and secondary)

underwear must not be visible, either bra straps or

underpants

clothing should be whole – torn holes in clothing are not permitted

shoes or sandals are permitted; rubber flip

flops should not be worn

shorts or skirts should be as long as the tips of fingers (both primary and secondary)

primary children must wear hats when playing

outdoors Departures Please inform the primary office if you are planning to leave OSC at the end of the semester so we can prepare leaving certificates and plan for student good-byes. Also inform your class teacher if you are planning to leave for holidays before December 13th. Families leaving early can have reports either forwarded to a mailing address or picked up in January upon your return. Next Primary Assembly: Wed, December 11th Important Notices:

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES 2013-2014

PRESENTS BLOCK 3/SEASON 3 Registration opens November 28-December 3

Activities start Monday, January 6- Friday, March 21

Parents and Homeroom Teachers, The electronic sign up for Co-Curricular programmes (Gecko Athletics, Performing Arts, Service Learning and After School Activities) Block 3 will start on November 28-December 3. Students will complete the form with assistance from Homeroom teachers. Please ensure that each student in your homeroom has submitted by December 3. Most of the offerings are self-explanatory, included are descriptions for the new additions. Encourage students not to over extend themselves because their commitment and attendance are required. Thanks, Ethel Wolfe - ASA Coordinator (Room M 37) NEW AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES: SURFACE EMBELLISHMENT (6-12) The activity will involve a series of workshops focusing on block printing, stencil printing, screen printing and some embroidery to upcycle existing accessories. All activities will focus on design, encouraging students to play around with ideas and get a feel for the design process. SIGN LANGUAGE (6-12) This year a new Service Learning project called Deaf/Hearing Exchange was started with great success. Students enjoyed learning Sri Lankan Sign language by interacting with a teacher of the deaf. We are expanding the experience and Mr. Gebrial in coordination with Ms. Fert, will be teaching Sign language for ASA. Students will learn basic signing and have a real experience practicing their skills with deaf teenagers. WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY (5-12) “Wildlife Photography on a budget: From macro to mega-zoom, what can you get out of your camera? We will be exploring basic photographic techniques using your own digital camera, with an emphasis on the natural world. Taking the photo is the first step but post-processing is very important and can be used to enhance the final „look‟ of your image. Let‟s see what we can produce! Choose this activity if you like the natural world, cameras and computers!
