January 29, 2016 Dear parishioners, Greetings. According to Church canon law and Diocesan policy, the Pastor must publish an annual report to the congregation. Our books are open to anyone who wants to see a detailed financial statement. Why do we publish this report? After all, in secular terms, you are the shareholders of the St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center. I believe that you have the right to know where the money comes from and where the money is spent. Not all the income comes from the Sunday offerings. We have benefactors who believe in our ministry and contribute towards our financial needs. Recently I enrolled all our benefactors to the Apostolate of St. Jude Thaddeus Shrine in San Francisco as Perpetual Family Members. As a benefactor, you will be remembered daily in the Dominican Order’s prayers and good works and also in the solemn Novenas and Novena Masses throughout the years. This year the Dominicans are celebrating the 800th anniversary since its foundation. St. Dominic, the founder of our Order, from the very beginning wanted the Dominicans to be close to major universities in Europe. St. Dominic sent friars to the Universities of Bologna, Cologne, Paris, Oxford and others to teach and to learn. We continue the tradition of the Order to minister to the universities’ communities. A few years ago, our Western Dominican Province made a commitment to campus ministry – today we serve nine campuses. In order to have a successful ministry, we need your support. Unfortunately our Sunday offerings went down by al-most $50,000 from the previous year. However, the total net operating loss was $31,345 for the fiscal year 2014-15 due to the generosity of our benefactors. We will continue to address the $29,658 outstanding debt to the Diocese. This report does not reflect the critical financial decisions that were made for the current budget year. If you have any questions about the financial report, please feel free to call our bookkeeper Matt Ellis at 327-4665, ext. 108. During the fiscal year 2014-2015, we had one baptism, 27 confirmations, two marriages and 17 First Communions, all aided by your support for pastoral ministries. Let us pull our resources together in order to put our faith community on solid financial grounds. Pray about increas-ing your Sunday offering by two, three, or five dollars each Sunday. Let’s try to make it easier for the new pastor who will lead this faith community in the coming years. I am happy that I am able to help this community. In the Acts of the Apostles 20:24 St. Paul says, “My only aim is to fin-ish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me – the task of testifying the good news of God’s grace.” Personally, it is rewarding to serve you until June, when I will go back to enjoy my retirement. May God bless you and many thanks for your support and generosity. As I am writing this letter, I received the year-end report of the 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal. Our goal was $47,520.00 and the total fulfilled was $38,295.00. I would like to thank all those who have contributed to this appeal in order to help the work of the Diocese. I want to remind you that the Newman community benefits from this appeal, such as last year’s $10,000 grant for the student housing renovation project. Before I close, I want to thank the Newman Sustaining Board and the Newman Foundation for their financial support. They have supported us in maintaining our 53 year old building. Blessings on you and all your endeavors. Love and Peace, Fr. Albert Felice-Pace, O.P.
