Larrakeyah Peer Support Program
This week we further develop the range of strategies we can use in challenging situations. This session focuses
on Step 3 of the model. Proceed. In order to learn from situations and move forward children need to go beyond
thinking of strategies and action them. Children recognise despite the use of a range of strategies , sometimes they cannot change the
situation. At these times, it is important to accept the situation and move forward with a positive outlook.
Encourage your child to follow through with strategies they have discussed and planned to use. It is important to then help them
evaluate if this has worked or if they need to try a different strategy.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Last week, Larrakeyah Primary students participated in The Beat “Amaze”
production. It was an outstanding production and I am always amazed at the
talent that is displayed. We were very proud of our students who represented
Larrakeyah Primary. Their performance in dance was excellent. Congratulations!
Thank you to Mrs Vrettis for her time and work in preparing our students for the
performance.
In preparation for the Year 6 study tour to Singapore next year, Mr Collister, Mrs
Harvey and Mr King gave an excellent information presentation to parents of
students currently in Year 5. This was well attended by parents. The presentation
covered all aspects of the trip and gave parents an opportunity to ask questions.
Please access the website to view the presentation.
Last week Darwin High School Year 12 Community Studies students visited Year 4/5
Rowat to run coaching/sporting clinics. This is a great example of the collaboration
between Darwin City schools and Independent Public Schools.
School Council has suggested $150.00 for voluntary parent contributions. Many
thanks to those parents who have already made voluntary parent contributions to
the school as these funds further assist our school programs and projects. Parents
are still coming to the front office to make contributions – much appreciated.
Students are practising hard for the whole school concert “A Night On Broadway”.
The performance promises to be excellent! “A Night On Broadway” will be at the
Darwin Entertainment Centre on Friday 9th October at 7pm.
Tickets can be purchased either online www.yourcentre.com.au or from the DEC
Box Office. $22 adult and $12 child or concession holders. There is no charge for
Larrakeyah Primary students who will be performing. As the concert is “out of normal
school hours”, Larrakeyah Primary students can only attend if they are
accompanied by a parent or guardian. Any Larrakeyah Primary students attending
who are not participating in the Performance must be seated with their parents and
a ticket needs to be purchased for them. Please purchase your tickets soon as they
are selling fast.

NEWS FROM THE DEFENCE SCHOOL TRANSITION AIDE (DSTA)
Visible Learning
Transition/ Year 1 Bryson
In English, we are leaning to write an
information report on an animal. First, students
listened to a non-fiction text about the animal
and helped the teacher write a report on the
board. Next, the book was read again so students
could recall different information. The students attempted to
write their own report in their books. After editing with the teacher, students
wrote out a good copy which was attached to the animal (created from paper plates)
and displayed in the room. Maths: Learning Intention – We are learning to split a big into two smaller
numbers.
Success Criteria – I can split a big number into two smaller numbers (groups) when
using counters (Transition).
I can split a large number into two smaller numbers using tens and ones (Year 1).

Morcombe Family Presentation
On Tuesday 15th Sept, the Year 3 – 6 students were privileged to attend a presentation by Bruce and Denise Morcombe, parents of
Daniel Morcombe who was abducted and murdered in December 2003. This talk was, as well as being very sad to listen to, a very
important opportunity for the students to hear the message about ‘Keeping Kids Safe!’ which the Morcombe Family, through the Dan-
iel Morcombe Foundation, have spread to over 450 schools throughout Australia. Bruce and Denise talked about how children should
be very aware of strangers and the warning signs given by their body that they should listen to. They talked about the 3R’s:
Recognise – what danger is posed by strangers approaching them
React – ignore a stranger and run away if you are afraid
Report – Tell someone: a parent, a friend you trust a policeman
They gave the students important strategies about identifying adults who can be trusted and to set up a network of people they can
talk to, as well as having a password to identify a trusted person who can drive them home.
Bruce and Denise also provided Larrakeyah School with a number of Educational Resources which will be used by the teachers to
keep educating the students in being safe. Schools and parents need to be constantly re-enforcing the message that students have to
be wary of strangers and to keep themselves and their friends safe.
If you would like to find out more visit www.DanielMorcombe.com.au where you will find great deal of important information.
You can also order their educational resources which are free to schools and parents.
Darwin High School principal Trevor Read and some
of the Year 12 Community Studies students came to our
school last week to run a coaching clinic as part of their
studies. It was great for us to work with another
Independent Public School and it was a great benefit to
all of the students involved.
