Dear friends,

It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 40th Annual Golden Bell Auction: “A Night at the Derby.”

I am particularly honored to welcome you this evening in this, my first year serving as Bellarmine’s President. I feel so fortunate to be entrusted with this position, and so blessed to work with the young men who form the heart of Bellarmine, along with the tremendous women and men I call colleagues, and the parents who are our essential partners in this work.

Your presence here this evening, along with your active participation in the live and silent auction, form an important, very fun way in which you can support part of our core mission as a school – making a Bellarmine education possible for all students, regardless of their economic circumstances. All of our proceeds this evening will go to support our Direct Financial Aid Fund. I am so proud of the amount of resources that Bellarmine devotes to financial aid, which will total $4 million this year, more than any high school in California. Raising that much money each year is a significant challenge, but a very worthy one as well. We firmly believe that while financial aid is awarded to nearly 25% of our students, 100% of our students benefit from the diversity made possible by this program.

I am so grateful to Bellarmine’s Boards of Regents and Trustees, who have enthusiastically embraced this auction as their event. I am particularly thankful to the Chairs of our two Boards – Andrew Moley ’82, chair of our Trustees; and Brian McSweeney ’78, chair of our Regents, for their leadership and service to their alma mater.

I also want to thank those who have generously supported the auction in other ways, particularly our underwriters, as well as those who have donated unique and interesting items for the silent and live auctions.

Special thanks are in order to Brian Christensen, Director of Special Projects for Development & Alumni, and Claudia DeNuccio, one of our Trustees who has once again given a great deal of her time serving as the volunteer event chair. The members of the Office of Advancement have all really stepped-up in support of this auction. Jeremy Soulia and Nancy Janda have worked tirelessly to prepare a first-class menu and venue for our event tonight. Juan Navarro and the members of his grounds crew have done much work behind the scenes. And many volunteers have given their time to make this Night at the Derby one to remember. Thank you one and all!

Thank you once again for being here with us this evening, and for helping us to form young men for and with others through their education at Bellarmine.

Gratefully,

Chris Meyercord ‘88 President

Auction informAtionCHECK-IN PROCESS: Upon registration, you were asked to submit a cell phone number for you and your guests, which would be used for the GiveSmart mobile bidding pre-registration. Our staff made every attempt to collect a cell phone number for all ticket purchasers (and their guests) and we’ll be assigning one cell number per bidder number. Pre-registration allows you to preview the silent auction items and receive important updates concerning the on-campus event. All attendees shall stop at the check-in tables to register their credit card, which will reduce the need to stop by check-out later that evening.

If you DO NOT receive a text message on your smartphone by midnight, March 9th, welcoming you to the mobile bidding process and offering a preview for the silent auction items (bidder and table numbers will be made available upon logging in) you will need to stop at the registration area and register your mobile phone, at which point you’ll receive your table number.

All catalogs will be placed directly on the tables and your bidder number is located on the catalog’s backside.

CHECK-OUT PROCESS:

All silent auction tables close at 8:30 pm; however, check-out will open at 9:30 pm. The check-out area will be located inside the last classroom of the Lokey Academic Center, closest to the Gym.

If you registered your credit card information at check-in, your silent auction item receipt will be delivered to your table by 9:30 pm. If we do not have your credit card information on file, you will need to stop at check-out and pick up a printed receipt, in order to pick up your items from the silent auction tables. Note that all certificates (vacation homes, dinners, sporting events, etc.) may be redeemed at check-out.

Silent Auction / DonAtionS

The use of GiveSmart’s mobile bidding technology will be used for the silent auction and allow you to preview the items pre-event, as well as continue bidding while you enjoy your dinner. All Silent Auction tables close at 8:30 pm.

Donations up to $2,000 may be entered on your smartphone, but for larger amounts please use the envelopes provided on the dining tables.

live Auction

All winning bids from the Live Auction, which begins at 9:00 pm, will be identified by our Auctioneer and will not go through the mobile bidding process.

*Live Auction purchases & envelope donations will be added up through the close of the event and may not be reflected on your printed receipt. Following the conclusion of the event, all winning bid/sale amounts will be verified and your credit card will be charged by March 15th, at which point updated receipts will be emailed to participants.

**To make payment and/or item pick-up arrangements, please contact Brian Christensen at 408-537-9210.

In 2012, Adele swept the Grammy Awards, taking home six wins, including Album of the Year. “This record is inspired by something that is really normal and everyone’s been through it—just a rubbish relationship,” she said at the ceremony. In 2013, Adele won her seventh Grammy (Best Pop Solo Performance) for her hit single “Set Fire to the Rain.” That same year, the singer won a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for “Skyfall,” the theme song for the 2013 James Bond film of the same name.

Supporting Bellarmine’sDirect Financial Aid Fund

At the 2007 Golden Bell Auction, our Last Person Standing raised an unprecedented $653,000 for Direct Financial Aid. What is even more impressive is the fact that through this generosity Bellarmine impacted the lives of hundreds of deserving students!

The belief in education for every qualified student is rooted in the 482-year Jesuit tradition, but is only made possible through the support of many.

In 2016, our mission remains the same, yet the need continues to increase. Our Middle Class families are struggling to find the resources to make the Bellarmine experience possible for their sons. In many cases, the award needed to make the difference may only be $1,000, $2,000 or $5,000. The school is proud that 359 students will share nearly $4 million in financial aid funds this year. They have earned this opportunity through hard work and sacrifice.

It’s asked often, “Why does the school provide this level of financial aid?” The answer is quite simple: “It is the right thing to do. It is the Bellarmine thing to do!”

Tonight, we invite you to come together and make a difference in the lives of these families. Your support is an investment in the future of Bellarmine and the young men we educate.

Page 15: A Night At The Derby - Live Auction

“I would like to thank you for your generous support of the financial aid program at Bellarmine. Without financial aid I don’t know if my family could have afforded to send me and my brother to Bellarmine this year. I am very grateful for the opportunity to attend Bellarmine.”

“I would like to thank you for your generosity once again. Without you I would not have been able to attend such a great school and being surrounded by people who want to succeed. The entire experience of Bellarmine has been great. Go BELLS!”

“Bellarmine looks to push its students so we could exceed our own expectations, and your contributions to my tuition fuel my high school journey.”
