Issue Number 1 Autumn Term 2015 A Newsletter written by The Clare School FE Department students Welcome to the first edition of The FE Times in 2015. We hope you enjoy reading about what we have been doing this half term. Please let us know what you think of our newsletter. The FE Department Form RW Fundraising Activities As part of our ASDAN coursework, Form RW have been busy raising money to support a local charity. We have chosen to raise money for the Senior Citizen’s Club which takes place in the Eaton park Community Centre. Old people in our local community meet every week for a cup of tea, a chat and to play bingo. We wanted to raise some money for them so that they could buy some really nice biscuits or cakes to have with their cups of tea! So far we have organised a rugby world cup sweepstake which raised £26. We also organsied a non-uniform day on 21.10.15 which raised £67. We have set ourselves an ambitious target to raise £250 to give to the club. We’ll keep you posted about our activities over the next few weeks and let you know when we reach our target! TITAN Activities We practise our TITAN (Travel Independence Training Across the Nation) skills on a Thursday. We have been learning how to cross the road safely by stopping, looking for traffic and listening. When it is safe we can cross the road. We have been using pelican crossings, zebra crossings, indent crossings and puffin crossings. We also go on the bus to visit places like Riverside and Norwich city centre. We all like having fun and getting out and about. We also like going to cafes to have a mug of hot chocolate and a piece of cake… yummy! Yummy – Some of us enjoyed a Hot Chocolate in M & S as part of our TITAN work!

Form ZD News Form ZD have been working incredibly hard this half term. They have been exploring a sensory story of The BFG (Big Friendly Giant) which everyone has really enjoyed. They have also been doing ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ tac-pac – they have been listening to a range of waltz music, jive music and salsa music and doing different activities in time to the music to increase body awareness. The pupils have also been doing some amazing Halloween artwork, using handprints and footprints, which have been very effective. On a weekly basis, Form ZD have also been enjoying cooking sessions, both in class and in the Life Skills room.

Santa’s Helper We have already started buying gifts in preparation for ‘Santa’s Helper’ this year. Pupils in Form KH have been very busy during their TITAN sessions visiting various different shops and sourcing suitable gifts for everyone. This year we have already taken orders to buy over 140 presents in order to help out Santa! We will be very busy during the next few weeks making gift tags and wrapping the gifts.

Tuck Shop Pupils from the FE Department are in charge of running the staff ‘Tuck Shop’. Every week they do a stock check and then go out to buy treats to top up the supplies. So far they have made a profit of over £100 this half term (that is a LOT of chocolate!) All money will go towards funding FE trips and activities this year.

The new Further Education building During the summer holidays, the old ‘Health Block’ was converted into a new FE building. The warren of old, dark rooms has now become a light, bright and spacious new block comprising of a classroom, ‘common’ room, office and bathroom. The FE pupils are enjoying having more space and the more ‘grown up’ feel of the building. The classroom has been fitted with a state of the art interactive touchscreen whiteboard, which Miss Wicks is getting used to using! The common room has a nice relaxing area where pupils can sit and chat to friends, a Wii, another interactive ‘touchscreen’ whiteboard, tea and coffee making facilities and a television. Form RW have taken some photographs to show you what our new rooms look like!

Photos of the classroom, ‘common’ room and Miss Wicks’ office – it is very messy in there and needs a good tidy up!

Yasmin’s Fruit Business Yasmin in Form KH has organised a very successful fruit delivery enterprise. She takes telephone orders from staff each week and then goes to the fruit stall which is in the pub car park. She buys the fruit and then delivers to the staff. She already has four regular customers who are buying from her on a regular basis and she is hoping to expand her deliveries over the next half term.

Form KH – What a half term! Form KH have been reading the book and watching the DVD of ‘Charlie and The Chocolate Factory’ this half term. All their work has been based on the story. They have experimented with melting chocolate, made chocolate cakes, been dancing like oompa-loompas and like factory production workers. Everyone in the class has been working on their personalised ICT, Literacy and Numeracy targets this half term with some amazing progress, especially in ICT. All pupils in Form KH have also been going out in the community at least once a week, both locally and into the city. They have been practicing their TITAN work, doing shopping, buying Christmas presents, organising the staff tuck shop, doing ‘the Greggs run’ for staff and going to visit the fruit stall with staff orders. What a busy half term they have all had! It is set to be even more busy next half term (see ‘Important Dates’ section). Phew…they all need a good rest during the holidays!

The FE team hopes that you all have a lovely half term holiday! See you back at school on Monday, 2nd November.

Some photos of Form KH working hard. They have been busy buying newspapers and catching up with the stories in the media. They have also been busy working on their ICT choices and buying Christmas presents.
