A NEW SONG ON ROBERT THE DEVIL WINNER OF THE ST. LEGER, 1880. You sporting gents I pray attend, Unto these verses I have penn'd, I think it won't be out of place, To sing about the Leger race. On the Town Moor the race was run, And Robert the Devil nobly won, It really was a pretty sight, To see him beat the favourite. Robert the Devil has won the prize, So give a hearty cheer my boys, From Bend Or, he run away, At Doncaster on the Leger day. From the North, South, East & West, Lords. Squires, and Ladies gaily drest To Doncaster they made their way, Upon the, great St. Leger day. Every one was eager for To put their money on Bend Or, They made sure that he would win, But Robert the Devil took them in. For the race the course was cleared, And jockeys on their steeds appear'd, Both Touts and Tipsters all did say, Bend Or was sure to win the day. They said the Derby winner, he Would win the Leger easily, They back'd Bend Or against the field But to the "Devil" he had to yield. The word was given and off they flew Bend Or, the "Devil'' and Abbot, too, Went up the hill at such a speed, While each jock tried to get the lead. As the Red House turn they drew nigh. Such hearty shouts ascend the sky, "Bend Or is beat, he's giving way, And Robert the Devil wins the day." Fred Archer tried his very best, But Bend Or he was in distress, Tho' Archer he the whip applied, And put the spurs in Bend Or's side, Cannon smiled when he gave a glance And saw Bend Or had got no chance The "Devi!" was the first one in, And the Leger he did nobly win. The loosers sighed, the winners they Cried "bravo, bravo, hip, hurra! Up in the air they threw their hat, And said 'What do you think of that.' Robert the Devil has won the stake, And hundreds will a fortune make, With Tom Cannon upon his back, He beat Fred Archer and the Crack. Success to Blanton's noble bay, He fairly beat Bend Or to-day, He's a noble horse none can denoy, There wasn't one could pass him bye. Here,s to bis owners good and true, And Cannon, who pull'd him through Drink their health in bright Cham- pagne, Let's hope they'll win when he runs again. Composed and Printed by John White

A NEW SONG ON

ROBERT THE DEVIL

WINNER OF THE

ST. LEGER, 1880.

You sporting gents I pray attend, Unto these verses I have penn'd, I think it won't be out of place, To sing about the Leger race. On the Town Moor the race was run, And Robert the Devil nobly won, I t really was a pretty sight, To see him beat the favourite.

Such hearty shouts ascend the sky, "Bend Or is beat, he's giving way, And Robert the Devil wins the day."

Fred Archer tried his very best, But Bend Or he was in distress, Tho' Archer he the whip applied, And put the spurs in Bend Or's side, Cannon smiled when he gave a glance And saw Bend Or had got no chance The "Devi!" was the first one in, And the Leger he did nobly win.

Here,s to bis owners good and true, And Cannon, who pull'd him through Drink their health in bright Cham-

pagne, Let's hope they'll win when he runs

again.
