A New Reality• The world is no longer the safe, stable and predictable

place that it once was and, as a result, there are ever increasing and incredible changes on our nation's future horizon.

• What impact will this changing world have on education?

• How can schools prepare our youth for these realities?• How do we provide the essential skills and

empowerment they need to be contributors in solving important world and community problems?

Almost everyone wants schools to be better, but almost no one wants them to be different.

Why is this so important?

• People who earn a bachelors degree earn up to 75% more in lifetime earnings than high school graduates. Individuals who hold an associate degree earn up to 30% more.

• College graduates have better health and life outcomes, are more productive and have more meaningful choices in the future, and a better chance at a path out of poverty.

Focus on our Children’s FutureNot our Past

It is not about what is good for the adults, it is about what is

best for kids in a rapidly changing world.

As educators, let us replace the word accountability with this word…

Responsibility

We Can Improve Student Achievement

When we (the adults) learned to teach the literacy skills to ALL students, then ALL students improve!

Taking on the Resistance Directly

You will ALWAYS face resisters and naysayers. They key is how you deal with them. And it can be awful because you can’t eliminate feelings!

“The one size fits all school that took its present shape in the 1930’s was a poor fit with the reality even then. In the twenty first century, it belongs in our romantic memories of once upon a time.”

- John I. Goodlad

Two Second Rule

The “two second rule” is used by a driver who wants to maintain a safe following‐distance at any speed. A driver must count two seconds from when the car infront of him or her passes a fixed point, such as a tree, until the driver passes thesame fixed point. Drivers use this rule to determine the minimum distance tofollow a car traveling at the same speed. A diagram representing this distance isshown. As the speed of the cars increases, the minimum following distance alsoincreases. Explain how the “two second rule” leads to a greater minimum‐following distance as the speed of the cars increases. As part of your explanation, include the minimum following distances, in feet, for cars traveling at 30 miles per hour and 60 miles per hour.

Strategic Plan Exit Slip• Write three measurable professional goals that you personally

will own and take responsibility for that are relevant to the district’s five-year strategic plan.

• Suggestion: Every 20 days, reflect on your incremental progress on each goal and set a 20-day goal for improvement.

• Seal them in the envelope provided and give to Rick before you leave. Envelopes will be kept sealed in the superintendent’s office through the year and distributed back sealed to employees at the end of the year for your reflection.
