• Five Parts–Admission of California– Texas and New Mexico Act–Utah Act– Fugitive Slave Law–Abolish slave Trade in DC (not outlaw
slavery)
Kansas-Nebraska Act
• Stephen Douglas, senator from Illinois, believed in Popular Sovereignty.
• Passed a bill that gave this power to those areas.

•Army is sent to restore order.
•Guerrilla war follows

• People of Kansas tried to pass a Constitution… 3 times.
•They finally gave up!
Dred Scott Decision•Dred Scott was a slave. Sued his owner for freedom.
•Went all the way to Supreme Court .
•Supreme Court ruled slaves were property, had no rights, would never become citizens of the USA.

Raid on Harpers Ferry •John Brown led a band of men, they attacked the Armory at Harpers Ferry , and captured all the guns.
•Was going to use guns to start a war between pro and anti-slavery people.
•Was captured by Robert E Lee.

• N and S opposed it.
Peace Convention
• Congress again tried to prevent a split nation.
• This time, trying to avoid a civil war…
