Heather Havens,ContractorfortheU.S.Navy,Washington,DCIcurrentlyworkasamarinescientistfortheU.S.NavyinWashington,DC.Mypathwaytothiscareerwasnotadirectone.Itwasshapedthroughvariousopportunitiesthatpresentedthemselves,ofteninunlikelyways.Ibeganmyeducationasabiologymajor,withaspirationstobecomeamedicaldoctor.ThiswouldlikelyhavebeenmyultimatecareerpathifIhadnotsignedupforasummermarinebiologyfieldcourseintheBritishWestIndies.Ispentmysummerintheislandslearningabouttheeconomicsofsustainablefishing.IwentontostudymarinescienceingradschoolearningfirstaM.S.fromtheUniversityofSouthCarolinaandthenaPh.D.fromtheUniversityofSouthFlorida.Ihadaspirationsofbecomingaprofessor,butitwasanotherchanceenrollmentinagraduatecoursethatwouldshiftmycareerpathonceagain.AnoceanpolicycoursegavemetheopportunitytotraveltoDCtoparticipateinCapitolHillOceanWeek.AspartofthatexperienceImetwithmembersofCongressandtheirstaff
andlearnedfirst-handabouthowoceanpolicyisgeneratedatthenationallevel.Fromthatpoint,IknewthatIwantedtopursueacareerinoceanpolicy.Tomeetthatgoal,IparticipatedinapolicyinternshipattheConsortiumforOceanLeadership.ThroughthatinternshipIwasabletoworktoelevatetheimportanceofoceanscienceatthefederallevelbydraftingpressreleasesandletterstoCongressonpendingoceanlegislation.AftertheinternshipIhadtheopportunitytoparticipateinayear-longmarinepolicyfellowshipasastafferinaCongressionalofficeonCapitolHill.DuringmyfellowshipIwasresponsibleformonitoringmarinepolicyandadvisingamemberofCongressonkeyenvironmentalandnaturalresourcepolicy.AfterthefellowshipIwashiredbySAIC,ascienceandtechnologycompany,toworkasadefensecontractorfortheU.S.Navy.MyworkcurrentlyinvolvesthemodelingandsimulationofNavygeneratedunderwatersound.ItisaveryexcitingjobandIamconstantlychallengedtoutilizemanyaspectsofmyexperience.Forme,thehandsonexperiencethatIgainedbyspendingthesummerabroadandthecareerexperiencethatIgainedfrombothaninternshipandafellowshipwereextremelyvaluabletowardsguidingmetowardsthecareerIhavetoday.
Kelly Kryc,EnergyandClimatePolicy,U.S.DepartmentofState,Washington,DCDependingonwhoasks,Iamanoceanographer,ageologist,oraclimatescientist.MyresearchcareerfocusedonclimateinAntarctica,butmyprofessionalcareerhastakensomeinterestingturnsnotnecessarilyrelatedtomyPh.D.AfterIgraduated,Iwasn’treallysurewhatIcoulddowithaPh.D.otherthanbeaprofessor.Fortunately,IattendedaconferencewhereImetwiththeDirectorofOceanDrillingPrograms.HeneededanAssistantDirectorand,sointhenear-term,myjobproblemsweresolved(Moralofstory:Talktopeoplewhohavejobsyouwant).IstartedacareerinscienceprogrammanagementwhereIdevelopedimportantprofessionalskillsinmanagingpeople,communicating,andmakingdecisions.OneofthehardestthingsIeverdidwasacceptajobasaMarineMicrobiologyProgramOfficerataprivateFoundation,whichisafancywayofsayingIgavemoneytoscientistswith
greatideas.EventhoughIwasanoceanographer,Ihadzerobackgroundinbiology,soitwasreallyhardtolearnquicklyenoughtomakegooddecisionsaboutfundinggrants,but,intheend,Idevelopedsolidexpertiseinanentirelynewscientificdiscipline(Moralofstory:Challengeyourself).Aftertenyearsofdoingprogrammanagement,IrealizedIreallywantedworkoncleanenergyandclimatepolicy,soIquitmyjobandmovedbacktoWashingtonDCwhereIworkedfortheSenateCommitteeonEnergyandNaturalResourcesandnowworkattheStateDepartmentasWaterandPowerAdvisorfortheBureauofEnergyResources(MoralofStory:Takerisks).TheworkthatIdohelpstocreatelawsandpoliciesthatprovideaccesstocleanenergywhileprotectingournaturalresources.MyPh.D.gavemetheskills,theconfidence,andtheversatilitytosucceedinmanydifferentjobsacrossdifferentsectors–Ican’twaittoseewhat’snext!

essentialtobeamarinetechnician.After10yearsinthechemistrylab,Iamnowanassistantlabofficer,overseeingallthetechnicalsupportactivities,handlinglogistics,andsupportingtheshipboardcurator.Themarinetechnicianjobrequireslonghoursworkingonboardtheshipfor2monthsatatime,3timesayear.Wejointheshipfromvariousportsintheworldandworkwithshipcrewandscientistsfromallovertheworld.Ithriveintheteamenvironmentandlovetheocean,thetravel,experiencingthelocalculture,andmeetingnewscientistseverycruise.Wehavetechniciansfromallovertheworldandvariousbackgrounds,suchasgeography,biology,zoology,chemistry,physics,andofcoursegeology.Thereischallengeeveryday,weareproudtosaythatweareexcellentproblemsolvers.
Lily Simonson,Artist,LosAngeles,CAMyformaleducationaltrainingisinfineart.IreceivedaB.A.inArtPracticefromtheUniversityofCalifornia,BerkeleyandanM.F.A.inPaintingfromtheUniversityofCalifornia,LosAngeles.Manyofmypaintingscenteroninvertebrates,especiallydeepseainvertebrates.Althoughmydegreesareinart,Ichosetoattendresearchuniversitiesasopposedtoartschools,sothatIcouldpursuearangeofdisciplinesalongsidemyart.Throughcollegeandgradschool,Itookcoursesinliterature,philosophy,history,andscience—primarilyphysics,neuroscience,psychology,andchemistry.WhileIalwayshadastronginterestininvertebrates,Ihadintentionallywantedtoseparatemyaestheticinterestininvertebratesfromthefieldofscience.However,asIbecameinterestedinmoreunusual,deepseainvertebratesduringgraduateschool,Irealizedthatthebiologyofthecreatureswas,inmanyways,themostcompellingaspectofthework.Ibeganvisitingmarinelaboratories
toobservespecimensandspeakingwiththescientistswhostudythemtolearnmoreaboutthewaytheyfunctionintheocean’sdepths.Inthesummerof2012,IjoinedaresearchexpeditionfromScrippsInstitutionofOceanographytoexplorethedepthsofthecontinentalmarginalongtheSanDiegoCoastandfinallyhadthechancetoobservemanyofmyartisticsubjects—living!—astheywerecollectedfromthesedimentandwatercolumn.Beingabletoseetheanimalswhiletheywerealiveratherthanobservingpreservedspecimenswasatransformativeexperienceforme,asIwasabletodrawthemwhiletheymovedandseealloftheirnaturalpigmentation.Theexpeditionevenintroducedmetoabrandnewmedium:deepseasediment.Everyday,aftertheresearchersfinishedsievingthemudbroughtupfromtheoceanfloor,Iusedtheremainingsedimenttopaintanewmuralonthewalloftheship.
