Approximately one in seven nursing homes surveyed receives a five-star ranking. The rankings are based on numbers from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency that sets and enforces quality standards for all homes enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid. Facilities receive an overall rating of one to five stars from the government based on the number of stars earned in three other categories: health inspections, nurse staffing and quality of care. This is the fifth consecutive year that MCC has received this ranking from US News and World Report. As many of you will recall, the National Weather Service conducts their annual Tornado Warning drill in early March every year. It should be noted that one of the lessons learned in Joplin was that visitors did not realize they were under a tornado warning because like us, the hospital announced it as a code with a color. Therefore, one of the recommendations was that hospitals use “plain language” when announcing Tornado warnings. In the future, when the Operator makes this announcement, it will come across the PA system as “Code Brown, Tornado Warning” and will then be repeated. Obviously, if it is a drill, they will add the word “drill” to the announcement. Quilts We have a beautiful queen sized quilt for sale in the Auxiliary Office. It is hand quilted by our volunteers and is price at $375. The quilt is white with blue binding and 11 bluebirds embroidered over the top. Three, 4 X 4 foot quilt/wall hangings have been priced at $100 each. Please stop by the Auxiliary Office to take a look and make a purchase. “The Empty Bowl” Soup Event On Wednesday, March 5 the O’Fallon Women’s Club sponsored The “Empty Bowl” soup event. From the President...

Sandy JaskowiakAuxiliary President

As President this year, I intend to visit some of the volunteer sites in the hospital and learn about the special volunteers we have and what they contribute to the Auxiliary and the hospital. Recently, Ruth Ogles, Chairman of Support Services, invited me to visit the Multi-Service group responsible for assembling and folding the materials that are to be used not only in the hospital but what is to be mailed.

The volunteers are Dorothy Hackmann, Yvonne Weber, Louise Cohlmeyer, Barb Asbury, Karen Ping, Hank and Ellen Bohnemeier and Ruth Ogles. In 2013, they assembled 37,107 pamphlets and folders.

We so appreciate all the work they do. They usually work Fridays from 8 to 11:30 a.m., stopping once for a break and visiting. Most of these faithful volunteers have been providing not only this service for many years but in other areas of the hospital. Some have worked in the Surgery Waiting Lobby, Gift Shop, Transport, Youth Health Fair, Blood Drives, Home Care, and Care Center and in any areas where they are needed.

Thank you to ALL Auxiliary Volunteers for all you do. We have a total of 546 volunteers: Active-141, Active/Life-107, JV-25, Life-209 and Sustaining-64.

Our Youth Health Fair is going to be held March 24 through 27. This project invites 3rd and 4th grade students to the hospital to see what services are available to them and to their family. This is such a worthwhile project for the children. As volunteers we guide students from presentation to presentation, distribute information bags, assist the presenters, or assist with bus arrivals and departures. I have volunteered and am looking forward to meeting all of you.

Did you know that March 30 is Doctor Appreciation Day? When you are sick, there is no one more important to you than your doctor. The next time you have an appointment, it would be nice to tell them how much you appreciate them and thank them for the care they have given you. Or, if you don’t have an immediate appointment, think about sending a “card of thanks”.

FundraisingA New Book Sale will be held Monday, April 7

and Tuesday, April 8 in the hospital auditorium just in time to purchase books and other items to fill those Easter baskets.

Our Shoe Roads Production sale went well February 20 and 21. They had a nice display of work shoes and sandals. Also there were some lovely colorful purses, totes and change purses.

The rescheduled Scrubs and Beyond uniform sale held January 25 and 26 was successful, as well, with a commission earned of $3520.61.

The 2014 Book Bazaar will be Wednesday, April 30 through Saturday, May 3. Book collection started January 21 at the warehouse and will continue every Tuesday and Thursday from 8 to 11 a.m. and Saturday April 5 from 8 to 11 a.m. The last day to drop off books at the Auxiliary Warehouse is April 17. Barrels are also available for donations until April 11 in the Main and East (D) Lobbies of the hospital and at the following off campus locations:• Schnucks – Country Club Plaza• Schnucks – Swansea• Schnucks - Carlyle Plaza• Schnucks – O’Fallon• Belleville Health & Sports• St. Paul UCC - 115 West B Street Belleville, IL 62226• Regions Bank - 4800 W.
