In many cultures around the world, adolescence is marked as an important transition in life. At Tapestry, our seventh and eighth grade youth have been meeting with Rev. Kent to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and deepen their own beliefs. This Sunday we will recognize these four youth, as we celebrate the past and future of Unitarian Universalism. This is a multi-generational worship service. Children and youth are encour-aged to stay and participate in the worship service with their families.

It’s been decades in the making but it’s finally here. Tapestry and the seller have signed a purchase agreement for the Lake Forest property we have been working to-ward for these many months. Tapestry’s space needs are complicated, the seller’s needs are complicated—it’s a perfect match. There are too many details to mention to sort out along the way, but we’ve started the very long journey toward a permanent home of our own that will serve our liberal spiritual community in South Orange County for decades to come. Because our current lease at Madero goes through De-cember and because of provisions for the tenant in the building we are purchasing, we will not be moving until at least the start of 2018. That gives us ample time to work through our many design decisions and raise additional funds to make the building a welcoming new home for all.

Our agreement states that we are purchasing the property as-is. In the first 45 days, we’ll be evaluating exactly what that means. We have a task force who will be repre-senting key areas regarding space for religious education, worship, Ways and Means events, and administration so we can make the many decisions that lie ahead. While

your financial generosity has exceeded anyone’s expectations, the reality is that we are likely only to have the funds to make the building comply with current building code and for our occupancy permit. So it will be like any starter home—functional, but probably not ready for a magazine spread.

One of the conditions of the purchase agreement is that we cannot publish the address until the sale closes since the tenant won’t be told until then. We will have access to the building in the evening and on week-ends if scheduled 48 hours in advance, and are planning to set dates so you can tour it to see for yourself. Be aware that the space is very “built out” meaning there are lots of individual offices that will need to be re-moved to allow for our sanctuary, social hall, and kitchen. But the essentials are good—lots of parking, a quiet location, promising green space outside in a quiet corner of the complex. We’ll have about 70% more space than we do now.

If you’ve made or been thinking about making a financial pledge toward the down payment or fix up costs and have been waiting for the building to be real, now it is. We’ll be applying for grants to leverage those dollars even further. And we are now financing the entire mortgage with investments from Tapestry mem-bers and friends. The worship theme for May is Acceptance. Talking with the Wor-ship Committee members, we generated a long list of things in life that we struggle to accept. One topic that I won’t have time to preach about, but touches all of our lives is accepting our own bodies.

In the past month several elders have talked about their struggles with aging. More than the pain or decreased ability, they talk about the frustration of experiencing decline. I don’t have any great wisdom to share with you. Perhaps that’s because I have not experienced that struggle, and perhaps there is no real answer. I have observed a few things though.

Everyone has, or will struggle with an aging body. Often, personal struggles make us feel alone. And, when we struggle sometimes we tend to isolate ourselves out of exhaustion or embarrassment. But, you are not

alone. In different ways countless elders have shared with me their frustration and fear about aging. You are not alone and there is nothing to be embarrassed about. Speaking for a younger generation, your courage is actually really inspiring.

I have also heard elders talk about intentionally slowing down. Sometimes the body doesn’t move as fast as the mind, or vice versa, so you have to be extra cautious. Life moves at a slower speed as we age. If there is something to be gained from growing older, it is an opportunity to cultivate patience and compas-sion for our self. Those are hard lessons. And those two things, patience and compassion for our self, are two of the most profound spiritual gifts we can achieve in this life.

All our lives we depend on these imperfect bodies. From time to time hopefully we can accept them as a gift.

But both were met by ferocious reactionary measures that severely curtailed, and in many cases rolled back, racial and economic progress. This Third Reconstruc-tion is a profoundly moral awakening of justice-loving people united in a fusion coalition powerful enough to reclaim the possibility of democracy—even in the face of corporate-financed extremism.

Casper’s Wilderness Park is an 8,000 acre protected wilderness preserve nestled among the river terraces and sandstone canyons of the western coastal Santa Ana Mountains. Casper’s Wilderness Park is about a 30 minute drive from Tapestry. If you are not a camper, consider joining us for the day on Saturday. If you are thinking of camping, but don’t have equipment or camping experience, there are plenty of seasoned campers ready to help you out.

To make the trip even easier, we will coordinate meals for breakfasts and dinners. You are on your own for lunch. Join Unitarian Universalist Justice Ministry for

Immigrant Lobby Day: May 15, 2017

For over 20 years, the California immigrant rights movement has convened annually at the state capitol for a day of advocacy, to champion the rights of the community and celebrate immigrants as part of the fabric of our state. The Unitarian Universalist Justice Ministry of California will once again participate with the Cali-fornia Immigrant Policy Center (CIPC) at this very challenging time for immigrants and refugees.

Updated Tapestry Policies

Recently, the Tapestry Board approved the updated Conflict Resolution and Dealing with Difficult Behavior policies. It is important that the congregation is aware that these written policies exist so that conflicts can be resolved fairly and promptly. The Dispute and Conflict Resolution Process and Procedures includes a three phase approach to resolving conflicts that may arise between congregants, committees and staff. Fur-thermore, the Dealing with Difficult Behavior Policy outlines a six-step process to deal with disruptive or inappropriate behavior.

Both policies state that the preferred first steps are self-reflection and seeking to resolve conflict with face-to-face conversation. If those steps are not fruitful, contact the Committee On Shared Ministry, the minister, or a member of the Board for help with resolving the conflict. Tapestry leadership is committed to providing clear and comprehensive guidelines in these areas in an effort to foster strong community relations.

The RECY program is growing; we had a whopping 36 children and youth on Flower Communion Sunday. In order to meet the needs of our burgeoning program we need more classroom volunteers. There will be a training/orientation on May 21st for anyone interested in volunteering or already volunteering in RECY. To best meet the needs of our youth, all volunteers are background checked and sign a Code of Con-duct agreement. Teachers work in pairs and share classroom responsibilities. The RECY Committee and I are here to support your work in the classroom. Come volunteer in the classroom, our youth will amaze you!!!

RECY Field Trip to Temple Beth El, Aliso Viejo, May 5, 5:30pm-7pm

On Friday, May 5, RECY will take a field trip to Temple Beth El, a Jewish temple in Aliso Viejo. They of-fer two Friday evening services. A 6 pm Kabbalat Shabbat: A multi-generational joyous and participatory musical service, welcoming Shabbat with dancing, community, opportunities for reflection and inspiration and a 7:30 pm Traditional Reform Shabbat Service. Parents’ Night Out: Youth Group Fundraiser May 6, 4-8pm

Tapestry’s Youth Group is hosting a Parents’ Night Out on Saturday May 6 from 4-8pm at Tapestry. This is a fundraiser to help pay for teen group activities, such as field trips and snacks. Classroom Volunteer Orientation, Sunday May 21, 11:45-1pm

Recently we've had many new families and visitors to Tapestry, so the RE committee is seeking additional volunteers to assist in the classrooms. An upcoming orientation and training will help anyone interested to learn more about what we do in RE and how you can best support our efforts. All helpers begin as assistants and are asked to help out once a month in the classroom. Please join us in May to hear about class curricu-lums, routines, expectations and teacher responsibilities. WISE PLACE TOUR

On April 9th group members Charlotte Clarke, Kathy Meyers Saylor, Debbie Salahi, Terry Parker, Carol Wheeler and Karen Nichols were given a tour of WISE Place by Cindy Ja-cobs, Director of Development.

“WISEPlace has a 90-year history of caring for the community. By meeting basic needs such as housing, clothing, physical and emotional nour-ishment, as well as vocational and life skills

training, the WISEPlace Hotel for Women is one of the few places unaccompanied homeless women can go to begin again.”

WISE (Women, Inspired, Supported, Empowered) Place provides temporary housing and requires residents find jobs within a month. The women have a structured program to identify the needs of each applicant and assist in transitioning the women to achieve self-sufficiency. Cindy guided us on an informative tour of

their Santa Ana facility which included the wardrobe room where donated clothing help the women prepare for work and job interviews, the computer learning center, kitchen and the rest of the large yet warm and in-viting facility. She provided us with information about the women they assist, and let us know that 1 in 4 homeless adults are single women, including 18 year olds who have aged out of foster care. They have as-sisted women from all over the United States.

For our 2nd quarter group ACTION, we’ve elected to organize a one-time lunch for the 30 women in resi-dence. In addition we are researching the purchase of much needed fire escape ladders for the 2nd floor bed-rooms. Planned Parenthood “Co Champions!”

Did you know that Debbie Salahi and Rona Henry are official Planned Parenthood “co-champions”? In this role PP will send them action notices and volunteer requests and they will forward to our group. PP is us-ing the “snowflake” model of advocacy in which they funnel messages to the “champions” who will then forward the messages to their own networks in hopes that message recipients will act as advocates. They are keeping our group up to date on ways that we can as-sist in supporting PP!

Shirley’s lovely and spacious home proved to be a most de-lightful setting for our brunch in April. Linda Yeargin tempted our taste buds with two delicious cakes, lemon and chocolate. There were lots of enjoyable conversations with some lively political dis-cussions as usual. Thank you, Shirley, for being a gracious hostess for all of us.

On Tuesday, May 16th, we will have our regular “salad pot-luck,” and also a special birth-day celebration at Marsha Me-dina’s home. We will be cele-brating a triple 90th birthday in honor of Anne Farrell, Tomi Neuman, and Ruth McCoy. Be sure to mark your calendar for this wonderful event.

Our next meeting is on May 7, when we will dis-cuss M is for Malice by Sue Grafton. The subse-quent book hasn’t been chosen, but it will be a book by James Lee Burke, featuring the character Dave Robicheaux and his sidekick Clete Purcel. This se-ries is set in and around New Orleans and nearby low country of Louisiana and has quite a large fol-lowing of readers. Since quite a few Tapestrians are attending General Assembly in New Orleans, this seemed like a good choice to get everyone in the mood. The Answer Man

So, we are getting new digs. How long have we been working on this dream?

Well, Tapestry was formed from two churches in 1995 and since that year we have hoped and dreamed of a place of our own as rents continued to climb in OC. Thanks to the generosity of Tapestry faithful, looks like this is the last year we’ll be lin-ing someone else’s pockets with rent payments.

any support that a congregant might need. We main-

tain a small supply of helpful gadgets (wheelchairs,

walkers, commodes, etc.) and will lend them to any-

one who might need them.
