Rugby is a market town in Warwickshire, on the River Avon. The town is the second largest town in the county; 13 miles (21 km) east of Coventry, on the eastern edge of Warwickshire, near the borders with Northamptonshire and Leicestershire. The town is credited with being the birthplace of rugby football. Rugby is most famous for the invention of rugby football, which is played throughout the world. The invention of the game is credited to William Webb Ellis whilst breaking the existing rules of a football match played in 1823. It is also home to Rugby School, one of the best public schools in the country.
LEAMINGTON SPA 6.8 MILES TO THE CENTRE
In 2015 the historic town of Leamington Spa was voted as the third best place to live in the UK by the Times national newspaper. Many people are drawn to the area by the excellent schooling facilities available, shops, parks and surrounding countryside. The town is split by the River Leam which runs east to west through the town. It was on these banks that the Pump Rooms were built for people to bathe in salty spa water to heal their ailments. As a previous Britain in bloom winner the town has several key parks including Jephson Gardens, Victoria Park, Royal Pump Room Gardens, Mill Gardens, The Dell and Newbold Comyn.
KENILWORTH7.7 MILES TO THE CENTRE
Kenilworth is a hugely sought after large market town famous amongst other things for Kenilworth Castle. Kenilworth is one of England’s most magnificent castles. First built in the 1120s and a royal castle for most of its history, it was expanded by King John, John of Gaunt and Henry V. In 1563 Elizabeth I granted it to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, who converted Kenilworth into a lavish palace. The castle’s fortifications were dismantled in 1650, and the ruins later became famous thanks in part to Walter Scott’s 1821 romance Kenilworth. This bustling town has a some of the best restaurants in Warwickshire including The Cross, which holds a coveted Michelin Star.
WARWICKSHIRE
Positioned in the heart of England the county is famous for being the birthplace of William Shakespeare. There are no cities in Warwickshire since both Coventry and Birmingham were incorporated into the West Midlands County in 1974 and are now metropolitan authorities in themselves. Warwickshire hosts several key towns including Warwick, Stratford upon Avon, Kenilworth, Henley In Arden and Rugby to name a few.
