A Message From the President We've celebrated our country's birthday, played some good courses and are now looking to the immediate future. In August we're taking our Mountain Trip to Rumbling Bald, playing several fine courses and preparing for our Pinehurst Cup. There are still several openings in the Pinehurst Cup and we are looking for a couple of volunteers to act as Captains. One of last year's captains, Phil DeTurk, regrets that he'll be unable to participate this year. It is still hot so remember to hydrate of- ten. The August Meeting has been can- celled. It seems that, historically, many of our members have other activities and the August Meeting is sparsely attended. We remain in the process of collecting clubs and golf balls to send to our troops in the Middle East. If you have any to con- tribute please contact Mike Young at 295- 4385. One of our members, Debbie Webster, is about to undergo an operation for can- cer, please keep her in your prayers. one of our more popular events. Sook Shin walked away with first place while Rich Williams and Brian Harpster were tied for second. Jo Ann Duncan and Ed DeWitt tied for 4th place. Ed also took Closest to the Pin accolades as did Carole Skau. Ed and Sook also recorded birdies on the 7th and 5th holes respectively. We revived our Skills Challenge at Pinewild's (appropriately named) Chal-lenge course. We competed in driving, putting, pitching, bunker play chipping and approach shots from 50, 100 150 yard and a fairway bunker at around 100 yards. The Gents' competition was captured by Mike Young with Rich Williams second, Brian Harpster third and Ira Schugar fourth. The ladies were led by Jolly Erick-son first, Sook Shin second, Lynn Walker third, Donna Earnheart fourth and Patty Allan fifth. Sook shone brightly by lipping out her chip shot effort, but excelled by winning the putting outright. However, the most impressive shot of the day easily belonged to Jolly who holed out the 50 yard pitch shot. Congratulations to all of the contestants. We would appreciate feedback on this particular event as there is always room for improvement and this is a new contest for us. Let's make it terrific!! In August we heading for Pinewild's Magnolia course, Pinehurst #8 and Whis-pering Pines for our 18 hole events, Fox-fire and The Legacy for our 9 & Dines in addition to our Mountain Trip. Words of Wisdom: "Golf is like life - so much depends on how you play it".

August Events 2nd - Pinewild's Magnolia course, 18

holes 4th, 5th and 6th at Rumbling Bald Re-

sort at Lake Lure. 12th - 9 & Dine at Foxfire (Grey Fox) 16th - Pinehurst #8, 18 holes 19th - Hybrids and woods clinic at

Knollwood Fairways 26th - 9 & Dine at The Legacy

From the Golf Chair We started July with an outing at the tough Pinehurst #7 where we experienced some heavy, but short-lived, precipitation, inter-rupted us about half way through our round. But, it was short-lived and most of us continued on. The team of Nan Prosser, Patty Allan, Jim Legg and Roy Neal, in-spired by Nan's birdie on the very first hole, prevailed by a single stroke over Betty Hendrix, Lynn Walker and Phil DeTurk. Nan followed up with another birdie on the double dogleg par 5 12th hole. A personal highlight came when Norm Farnham birdied the par 3 13th. Closest to the Pin for the Ladies went to Patty Allan. Brian Harpster hit his approach to 1 foot, 10 inches and would have easily won for the Gents except Rich Williams holed out. Yes! Holed out!!! A bit of unwanted drama developed when a couple of our members became underhy-drated. Let's not let that happen again. Please keep an eye on one another. Mid Pines hosted us on the 19th where we tried a variation with two separate contests with a match on the front 9 and another on the back. Betty Hendrix carried her team of Peggy Jordan, Jim Legg and Mike Young, to victory on each 9 as she played her best round all year. Peggy helped the cause with a solid natural par on the difficult par 4 third hole. Personal highs came to Tom Hemp-stead and Norm Farnham who each parred three of the four par threes, no mean feat on Mid Pines testy par threes. Lynn Walker won the Closest to the Pin, beating every-one. (C'mon, guys.) Hyland Hills made a classy move by telling us that the 9 & Dine we had scheduled there for the 7th would be played on recently aer-ated greens. We moved to Whispering Pines where the greens were a bit substan-dard. Peggy Jordan and Patty Allan tied for first a single shot ahead of Lynn Walker. Ed DeWitt salvaged face for the gents' by tying with Carole Skau for 4th. Closest to the Pin awards went to Al Dick, Sue Deutch's guest and Janet Baron who edged out Tucky Hobbs by 8 inches. Norm Farnham had an excellent 39, Ed DeWitt also played well with a 42, and Martez shot a fine 46. It was good to have effervescent Donna Earnheart back with us after her health hiatus. We went to Pinewild's par 3 Azalea for our annual Three Clubs and a Putter Contest,

Tom’s Tips Heat, what is it? The name of a profes-sional basketball team in Miami? How about a movie starring Al Pacino ? Yes it is but it is also the environment in which we play our beloved game of golf during the summer months and it is a hazard. Not one listed in the “Rules of Golf” but never-theless, a hazard. There should be rules for playing in this hazard. Mostly, it is com-mon sense but it bears repeating, Hydrate. That means drink . Drink water, Gatorade, iced tea, almost any liquid to replace the loss of moisture through sweating. Yes ladies, we are sweating out there. We are not glowing. An extra garment would be a good addition to any golf bag. Granted, more appropriate for the male gender but you gals can always “pop in” to the ladies locker at the turn. A fresh golf shirt is a welcome change. Lastly, take your time. Even though we endorse quick play, move at a pace out there that is appropriate for you. Cut back on the practice swings and remember that this is a game and the cool days of Fall are coming. See you on the sweat course, I mean the golf course. ~Hempstead

Rules and More Rules Ball hit OOB lands on adjacent fairway It was incredible. Larry hit his drive 40 yards farther than I had seen him hit one the past 10 years. I mean long! Alas, it was a slice. His drive crossed the out of bounds stakes, over the creek across the out of bounds stakes on the adjacent parallel hole # 15 and landed in the fair-way. We were playing hole #12. Larry said he was going to play the ball from the fairway of #15. I said, not so fast, you are out of bounds, you must re-tee and take a one stroke penalty. What is the correct ruling? A. Larry must re tee and take a one

stroke penalty B. Larry must re-tee and take a two

stroke penalty C. Larry must take a one stroke penalty

and drop the ball within one club length of the point where the ball crossed out of bounds

D. Larry can play his ball from the other fairway without penalty. What is the correct answer and why?

Answer The correct answer is D; Larry can play his ball from the other fairway without penalty. The out of bounds ruling that most of us should know is “hit a ball out of bounds, one stroke penalty and re-hit from the spot from which the original ball was last played. "• I know, I know, to speed play most of us play as if C is the correct answer. Just be aware that it is wrong. However, in this scenario, the ball is not out of bounds. It came to rest on a playable area on the course, therefore it is inbounds unless a Local Rule provides otherwise. Rule 27 addresses Ball out of Bounds. Decision 27-20 is applicable in this situation.
