Our Holy Redeemer: Where Coming Home is What it’s All About! 1911 - (and has been for one hundred years!) - 2011 A Message from the Pastor Sixty-three parishioners of Our Holy Redeemer were acknowledged and commissioned as Catechists at the 11:30 A.M. Centenary Year Mass of Remembrance on 18 September 2011/Catechetical Sunday. The willingness of these men and women to take the love of God with them as they go from Mass into the classroom is truly a blessing, as was the presence at the Mass of so many other parishioners who have served as Catechists over the past one hundred years at Our Holy Redeemer! Together they stood, received a Blessing for Catechists, and bowed their heads as their ministry was entrusted to the care of Mary, the Mother of God and they prepared themselves to belong more deeply to the Mystery of the Eucharist and the Catechetical Year ahead! The Catechetical Year will very quickly take Catechists and God’s children entrusted to their care to the month of October: dedicated by the Church to Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary. Here at Our Holy Redeemer, on 21 October 2011 at 7:30 P.M., just six days after our Centenary Parish Day of Retreat (please see the announcement on page 6 of this bulletin), we will gather in our absolutely beautiful church to pray our monthly Rosary. Unlike the other months of the year (with the exception of May) we will take our Rosaries outdoors (weather permitting) as part of a candlelight procession, symbolizing what we are called to do in union with Mary: bear the Light of Christ into the world! Nationally, the Church in the United States of America also sets aside October as “Respect Life” month and as such, our monthly Rosary (21 October 2011 at 7:30 P.M.) will be offered for the unborn, their mothers, and the Life Center of Long Island, which for twenty-five years has done more than just “fill bottles for babies”; it has helped fill the world with babies as well! If you still happen to have a “bottle for babies” in the house, please bring it home with you on the night of the Rosary and place it at the Altar where it will be remembered with gratitude. Remembering with gratitude is something that I am already doing with respect to the life of Father Richard Mastrogiacomo who on 25 September will celebrate his last Sunday Mass at Our Holy Redeemer before he returns to Rome on 30 September to continue his pursuit of a License Degree in Spiritual Theology. Amongst the many things for which we should be grateful, we owe thanks to God for calling Father Mastrogiacomo to the Sacred Priesthood; we owe thanks to Father Mastrogiacomo for saying “Yes” to the call and for putting the Time, Talent, and Treasure entrusted to him at Ordination, so readily at the service of Our Holy Redeemer here in Freeport; and we owe thanks to Bishop Murphy for sending Father Mastrogiacomo to Our Holy Redeemer for the first three months of his Ordained Life. “Father Mastrogiacomo, please be assured of my prayers and the prayers of parishioners. I hope that your time with us, short though it was, might have been long enough to let you know that you have a home at Our Holy Redeemer, where coming home is what it’s all about!” One of Father Mastro’s last labours in the vineyard of Our Holy Redeemer was to train 43 boys and girls to serve at the Altar of Our Holy Redeemer as Altar Servers!

A Message from the Pastor

Sixty-three parishioners of Our Holy Redeemer were acknowledged and commissioned as Catechists at the

11:30 A.M. Centenary Year Mass of Remembrance on 18 September 2011/Catechetical Sunday. The willingness of

these men and women to take the love of God with them as they go from Mass into the classroom is truly a blessing, as was

the presence at the Mass of so many other parishioners who have served as Catechists over the past one hundred

years at Our Holy Redeemer! Together they stood, received a Blessing for Catechists, and bowed their heads as their

ministry was entrusted to the care of Mary, the Mother of God and they prepared themselves to belong more deeply

to the Mystery of the Eucharist and the Catechetical Year ahead!

The Catechetical Year will very quickly take Catechists and God’s children entrusted to their care to the month of

October: dedicated by the Church to Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary. Here at Our Holy Redeemer, on

21 October 2011 at 7:30 P.M., just six days after our Centenary Parish Day of Retreat (please see the announcement on

page 6 of this bulletin), we will gather in our absolutely beautiful church to pray our monthly Rosary. Unlike the other

months of the year (with the exception of May) we will take our Rosaries outdoors (weather permitting) as part of a

candlelight procession, symbolizing what we are called to do in union with Mary: bear the Light of Christ into the

world!

Nationally, the Church in the United States of America also sets aside October as “Respect Life” month and as such,

our monthly Rosary (21 October 2011 at 7:30 P.M.) will be offered for the unborn, their mothers, and the Life Center

of Long Island, which for twenty-five years has done more than just “fill bottles for babies”; it has helped fill the world

with babies as well! If you still happen to have a “bottle for babies” in the house, please bring it home with you on the

night of the Rosary and place it at the Altar where it will be remembered with gratitude.

Remembering with gratitude is something that I am already doing with

respect to the life of Father Richard Mastrogiacomo who on 25 September

will celebrate his last Sunday Mass at Our Holy Redeemer before he

returns to Rome on 30 September to continue his pursuit of a License

Degree in Spiritual Theology. Amongst the many things for which we

should be grateful, we owe thanks to God for calling Father

Mastrogiacomo to the Sacred Priesthood; we owe thanks to Father

Mastrogiacomo for saying “Yes” to the call and for putting the Time,

Talent, and Treasure entrusted to him at Ordination, so readily at the

service of Our Holy Redeemer here in Freeport; and we owe thanks to

Bishop Murphy for sending Father Mastrogiacomo to Our Holy

Redeemer for the first three months of his Ordained Life. “Father

Mastrogiacomo, please be assured of my prayers and the prayers of

parishioners. I hope that your time with us, short though it was, might

have been long enough to let you know that you have a home at Our Holy

Redeemer, where coming home is what it’s all about!”

One of Father Mastro’s last labours in the vineyard of Our Holy

Redeemer was to train 43 boys and girls to serve at the Altar of Our Holy

Redeemer as Altar Servers!

“Which of the two did His Father’s will?” (See

Matthew 21:28-32) Today in the reading from

Philippians we see that Jesus was obedient to the

Father’s will, even when it meant His death on the

cross. The crux of the matter for a Christian then is to

do the will of the Father, regardless of what this may

mean. We need not fear as we embark on the path in

which the will of God will take us. We know that God

will reward us as He did for His Son and all the saints.

It is not a matter of simply saying “yes” with the

mouth and then turn around and not do the Father’s

will as the first of the sons in the parable did. It is a

matter of actually doing the will of the Father as the

second son did. After all, our lives should be in

harmony with our prayer: “Thy will be done.” Our

saints, and above all, our Blessed Mother, are the best

examples for us to follow. Mary’s yes, was a

resounding yes to the will of God. In turn her yes

made possible our yes. Let us then invoke her

intercession as we endeavor to do the Father’s will.
