I also would like to thank the Nominating Committee (Marion Burkard, Judy Butler and John Steeves) for their hard work in filling the slots of the different Boards and Committees. Lastly, thank you to everyone who served on a Board or Committee for the past year for all your devotion. We all know that we’ve been through some serious stuff for the past few years: Karen retiring, hiring an intentional interim minister, the situation with that minister and the East Haven Police Dept. making it a difficult past couple of years. Well, the good news is that we have an opportunity now to look at what we can do to make Old Stone Church a bigger and better place. We will have tools to accomplish that, including the CAT survey, looking for and hiring a new intentional interim minister, and working on our profile so that we can begin the search for a permanent minister. We created a Behavioral Covenant for the church which was approved at the Annual Meeting on February 18; it’s printed in this issue of the Herald. I am very optimistic about our future. We have come together as a church and I see the enthusiasm and the spirit of joy at our Board and Church Council meetings. I feel everyone’s passion about the direction we are taking and I feel the energy we are generating with each other. It’s a very positive direction. There’s a lot of warmth being generated by each of us! I did a stewardship moment a couple of years ago, and I includ- ed the following in my message: ”We're going to take fear and build a house of love; we're going to take sadness and build a house of joy; we're going to take doubt and build a house of faith; we're going to take despair and build a house of hope.” This is a Springsteen quote (you all know of my penchant for Springsteen!) Floyd from one of the Daily Devotionals I receive every day (and I share on the Old Stone Facebook page): “God of the future, let us put our full trust in you, and in the truth that is always breaking forth from your Holy Word”. Amen. Let’s put our trust in God and His Truth in moving Old Stone forward.

BOARD OF GLOBAL OUTREACH

A special thank you to Earl Korngiebel for faithfully delivering food donations from Old Stone

Church to the East Haven Food Pantry every week. And acknowledgement and apprecia-

tion to those who donate food to their neighbors.

From their Website, DID YOU KNOW THE EAST HAVEN FOOD PANTRY:

Was established by a small group of volunteers at the Old Stone Church in 1985

Now at Christ and Epiphany Church, it serves 340 families or over 1,000 individuals who

received 8,500 food items per month

Provides a 3-day emergency food supply to East Haven residents in need.

Currently run by 30 dedicated volunteers who shop, stock shelves and distribute food

The majority of their food resources come from the donations by residents of East Haven

East Haven Food Pantry’s need is year-round for non-perishable foods. Cereal, tuna fish,

soup, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly are always basic necessities. At this

time, they are beginning to prepare for the end of the school year when children will not be

fed breakfast or lunch at school.

The Old Stone Church Board of Global Outreach would like to keep the East Haven Food

Pantry donations in the forefront as a local mission project, to suggest tuna as the Month of

March food item that can be left in the wagon in the Church vestibule. Macaroni and

cheese for April, and peanut butter and jelly for May. Of course, the Food Pantry is happy

to receive any food contributions or monetary gifts.

”We are starting our Summer and Fall registrations. We are fortunate to offer a summer program for 3-8 year old children in the summer. Our fall registration is for 3-5 year olds. The Playschool offers a three-hour nursery program with wonderful projects and learning experiences on a daily basis. We also offer a full day program to accommodate our working parents. As always we look to the congregation to spread the word about our exceptional program and dedicated staff that create such a child friendly environment. Pass the information along. We advertise in the local paper, flyers around town, signs on the green and in Foxon, and our website. We hope to continue to increase our enrollment. March is a fun month when we celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with green eggs and ham, etc. We also have a pajama day, St. Patrick’s Day art projects, and spring activities such as planting. The Easter holiday is always exciting and opens so many ideas for our teachers to bring to the classroom. We have already taken class walks to discuss and observe nature first hand. Units on science are always interesting and fun. Take a walk down our hallway and enjoy the hard work of all our students. You’ll be surprised at the creativity and experiences. That’s your Playschool staff, hard at work! We continue to welcome Ms. Sascha from the town’s library for her monthly visits.

Keep the date open…..May 18th ---Our second annual BINGO !!!!!

Happy First Day of Spring --- we have been waiting patiently!!!!

Karen Goodale, Director Jennifer Calonico, Asst. Director

The Playschool is in need of a few items that will help stretch their budget: disinfectant wipes, paper plates (9” & 6”), Kleenex, plastic spoons, masking tape and gift cards to Stop n Shop for milk and snacks. A box in the gym is available for your donations. Thank you!

Monthly Spotlight on your Playschool Teachers .

Joan Dougherty

Tell us about yourself: Joan Moore Dougher ty. I was raised in East Haven by my parents, Mary and Judson Moore. I have been married to my husband Jim Dougherty for 37 years. We lived in Washington, D.C. where I worked at The Madeira School in Greenway, V.A. We also lived in West Hartford, CT prior to moving to East Haven. I enjoy traveling, running and spending time at the beach.

What brought you to OSC Playschool? My children, Judson and Julie, attended Old

Stone Church Playschool. In 1994 my life changed drastically by the death of my son to brain cancer. In my healing process I approached Marion Burkard and Irene Bast about a teaching position and was hired! The friendships developed with my co-teachers, combined with the irrepressible joy of young children have brought me much comfort over the years.

Years of service: 1994 - present

Do you have some favorite memories? So many memor ies. One little boy dur ing my fir st year insisted on calling me, “Hey! Dr. D.” (which is sort of how we pronounce our last name). Always made me laugh. Of course, I’ll always be grateful for the hugs, so many hugs!!

OLD STONE CHURCH BEHAVIORAL COVENANT

PREAMBLE:

We recognize that we are a diverse group of believers holding differing viewpoints. We

are, however, united in our belief that God wants us to love God, one another and

ourselves. We hereby covenant as individuals and as a congregation to follow the

behaviors listed below and to hold each other accountable for them:

We will:

Uphold the dignity of each person in the congregation, including the pastor and the

church leaders.

Listen to what Jesus is telling us to do.

Keep our communications and interactions timely, direct, open, and honest, keeping

Christ as the center.

Recognize that all voices are equal, because God is personal but never private,

focusing on what is best for the church as a whole rather than individual or small

group needs.

Be focused toward our goals as determined by congregational input at a congrega-

tional planning meeting.

Make positive statements and consider the impact of our words and actions on

others.

Be open to suggestions from everyone to ensure that each person is heard as we

seek consensus.

Exercise patience, listen attentively and stay together in covenant with each other

for the good of the Church.

Not use or accept intimidation as a behavior in any form.

Encourage open, honest, graceful and face-to-face discussion where all ideas are

valued and respected.

Raise concerns and/or questions during Board/Council meetings, discuss issues that

arise before Board/Council meetings at the next meeting, and refrain from

discussing issues outside of the meetings so that gossip is avoided.

Understand that conflict is a part of life, seeking resolution in a Christian way.
