A message from our president...

Dear Friends, I write this quickly as I am on a road journey with good friends – Steamboat Springs, CO, Jackson, WY and on to Yellowstone. What an adventure. I am in awe of the grandeur and majesty of the Grand Tetons! Breathtaking beauty, rising straight out of the earth. Big, bold and screaming look at me! Steamboat is my “other home”. We have traveled here for almost 25 years – it is warm and cozy and familiar. We see wildlife galore – moose, elk, deer, fox, marmot and pine marten. Yellowstone is new to me and I’m so excited to see it. Interestingly, it’s not about the destination, the beauty, the wonder – the best part of the journey is who we are with. John and Barbara have been goods friends for almost 20 years. We have traveled many times together and laugh and talk and love to experience new adventures together. We met when we were asked to join a Havurah, back in 2000. B’nai Jehudah

was going through a tough time and Rick Klein “tapped me on the shoulder” and said “come, join our Havurah.” Saying yes introduced us to a whole new world within the synagogue. I write about this, today, because, for me, “one” of the best things we have gained from our belonging to B’nai Jehudah for over 40 years are the relationships and friendships we have developed. Throughout elementary school, high school and college, I developed early friendships but they were centered on where I was at the time. For me, it took a commitment of joining a welcoming congregation for me to feel I “belonged”. I urge all of us to take a moment and consider – do you want to feel more connected to B’nai Jehudah? Call me or call the office. Let us help you get connected in a meaningful way. Are you already connected? Reach out to someone you see often at services, on Sunday morning or in class – ask them to get involved in synagogue life. In a few short months we will be back in our re- imagined spiritual home! What a ride it’s been the past several months. I want to thank all of our religious school students and their parents for having faith, sticking together as a community and going with the flow! With change comes progress. We have all learned how resilient we can be. Kudos to the clergy and staff for making the best and most of this transitional time. In 2020 -21 we will be celebrating our 150th year as a congregation. 150 years!! We have a talented team chaired by Jennie and Dan Stolper that will help us celebrate this remarkable milestone. I am so honored to be able to serve as your President. I will do my best to keep us on course, but also do some exploring – finding new and different ways to engage and re-engage. I hope you will feel free to reach out to me during my tenure to share good experiences, happy news, or any issues I may be able to help with. L’shalom, Jocelyn [email protected] (913) 908-8588

CONFIRMATION CLASS

Ian Axelrod Parents: Staci & Mike Axelrod Favorite Jewish memory was recently at BBYO’s International Convention 2019. I was in a room with 4000+ Jewish teens doing Havdallah together, and the energy you could feel in there was powerful. This is one of the

most astonishing things I have ever experienced.

Aden Barash Parents: Amy & Brad Barash My favorite Jewish memory was becoming a Bar Mitzvah and having all of my close friends and family there to celebrate.

Julia Bigus Parents: Ellyn & Ed Bigus Just before kindergarten I went to Israel with my family. I remember going to the Wailing Wall. I didn’t know how to write yet, but I really wanted God to recognize my existence so I put a drawing of my family in one of the cracks.

Ryan Burns Parents: Jennifer & Jeff Burns My favorite Jewish memory is the confirmation retreat that we went on this year. Our class did so many bonding activities and got to know each other really well. We had a lot of fun trying new things and growing close as a community.

Ilana Fingersh Parents: Brenda Althouse & Paul Fingersh My favorite Jewish memory was going to Israel with my family. I got to connect with cousins and relatives and experience being in a Jewish state. I loved the feeling of being surrounded by other Jewish people in a beautiful and fun country.

David Franke Parents: Allison DeWitt & Michael Franke My favorite Jewish memory was the day I summited Anchor Mountain. The whole way up, the year before me was playing in my head. And when I reached the top, my mountain was complete. I was rewarded with the most

unforgettable emotion and incredible view you can imagine. Max Gelman Parents: Aimee & Steve Bernstein, April & Stuart Gelman My favorite Jewish memories are all the times I spent at Camp Herzl. These special experiences have shaped me into the person I am today and I don't know who I would be without them. It has also provided friends

that will be in my life forever.

Mitch Goldstein Parents: Laurie & Jake Goldstein My favorite Jewish memory was the summer of 2018 when 35 of my best friends and I hiked up Anchor Mountain in Colorado. That year of camp was very special because it was our last as campers. The weeks traveling Colorado were

the best of my life. Matthew Greenfield Parents: Laurie & Michael Greenfield My favorite Jewish memory is playing flag football in Miss Emily’s Sunday school class. We were all just playing around and having a great time, it was then that I knew that these

guys would be lifelong friends. Since then, we have always looked out for one another.

Caroline Haines Parents: Dawn Aronoff & Nicholas Haines My favorite Jewish memory is going to BBYO conventions and seeing all my Jewish friends Susannah King Parents: Amanda Morgan King & Chad King My favorite Jewish memory occurred in Machane Jehudah. Rabbi Elana and I walked through the rain, and she showed me God in the raindrops. For the first time, I felt truly connected with God. That experience helped

me stay interested, involved, and linked to my Jewish community. Paige Lambert Parents: Dorothy & Tim Lambert My favorite Jewish memory has been my carpool with the Weiland family. We have been driving together for Kesher/Confirmation for years. Ben and I have become good friends and it's been fun to share

our experiences with our parents on our long drive back to Shawnee.

Noah Lindenlaub Parents: Debbie & Adam Lindenlaub My favorite Jewish memory is 6th grade Sunday school, the year I really started to bond with my fellow classmates while having an awesome teacher (Ms. Emily) who made Sunday school fun. Alexa Litwin Parents: Tracey & Kevin Litwin My favorite Jewish memory is the long-lasting relationships that I have built with the people in my confirmation class.

B’NAI MITZVAH

Ben Mondry Parents: Sarah & Russ Mondry My favorite Jewish memory is when I became a Bar Mitzvah with my brother, Jacob. Justice Renoux Parents: Aviva Renoux If I had to choose a favorite Jewish memory, I’d probably have to choose my first experience of going to synagogue. Before the age of twelve I was raised non-religious. My only understanding of God was that “He was

watching over me”, but when I turned twelve that all changed. We went to Ohev Shalom synagogue and I was fascinated by what I saw. All the ancient rituals performed by the Rabbi and congregation, such as the opening of the ark and the closing service hymns opened within me a desire to learn more about God and Judaism.

Mikaela Rittmaster Parents: Miriam & Aaron Rittmaster My favorite Jewish memory is when I went to OSRUI summer camp. I found many life-long friends and created happy, lasting memories. Nate Schemmel Parents: Celeste & Todd Schemmel My favorite Jewish memory was becoming a Bar Mitzvah in Israel on the congregational trip. It was a perfect memory to have to become a Jewish man. It was also special to make new friends within the congregation while having a once in a lifetime experience in Israel.

Nick Schemmel Parents: Celeste & Todd Schemmel My favorite Jewish memory was the Confirmation retreat we took in the fall because of the friendships I made.

Charlie Schifman Parents: Lisa & Ken Schifman My favorite Jewish memory was going to Colorado on my Masada trip via Camp Sabra. I was able to learn about myself in a Jewish aspect while enjoying the amazing scenery of Colorado. As a group, we climbed a mountain

together, which was a very special moment for me.

Claire Smith Parents: Angie & Rusty Smith One of the most meaningful Jewish memories I have is observing Tisha B’Av at camp. To mourn the destruction of the temple, we dressed in black and walked around camp in silence, until a service that would be held in the dark only lit by glow sticks. The campers

sang both prayers regarding the holiday and songs that resonate with camp tradition. We sat together as a community, remembering our past and mourning together.

Hannah Smuckler Parents: Erin & Brad Smuckler My favorite Jewish memory takes place at Jewish summer camp when my friends and I went on a three-day camping trip. We were in a new area, and we all worked together when things didn’t work out perfectly to make it the best part of our summers. Ben Wieland Parents: Jennifer & Jeff Wieland My favorite Jewish memory is the years I spent and memories I gained as a camper and counselor at Machane Jehudah.

Miles Edward Cohen, son of Kathy Bigelow and Adam Cohen, will celebrate becoming a Bar Mitzvah during the 10:30 am Shabbat service on June 8, 2019. He participates in school orchestra, Fiddle Club and qualified for the National Science Bee. For his tzedakah project, Miles organized a drive for personal care items for Independence Boulevard Christian Church and volunteered serving Mitzvah Meals at the church. Zachary Krigsten Saylan, son of Marcy and Kevin Saylan, will celebrate becoming a Bar Mitzvah during the 10:30 am Shabbat service on June 22, 2019. Zachary is a 7th grade student at Pleasant Ridge Middle School. He is active in Kesher and BBYO. He also plays baseball, basketball and participates in band. Farewell Jeanne Adler

On Saturday, June 29, congregants are invited to toast Jeanne Adler on her retirement as Executive Director of B’nai Jehudah. The celebration will be held in the Social Hall at the Jewish Community Campus, 5801 W 115th St, Overland Park, KS, beginning with havdalah at 7:30 pm and followed by a dessert reception. “During Jeanne’s tenure as our Executive Director, she has expertly and quietly navigated the administrative workings of our congregation masterfully. In partnership, she has taught Torah in word and in deed to staff and volunteer leaders. She has treated each member of our community with compassion; and, her sense of prayer has contributed to the spiritual growth of the congregation. We have been deeply blessed to have Jeanne as a part of B’nai Jehudah. As Executive Director, Jeanne has provided an invaluable service to our congregation,” said Rabbi Arthur Nemitoff. Jeanne has been B’nai Jehudah’s executive director for 13 years. She previously served in the same capacity at Congregation Beth Torah. Jeanne has been actively involved in the National Association for Temple Administration (NATA), serving on its board and chairing the organization’s Strategic Planning Task Force. She also co-chaired the Joint NATA-NAASE (National Association of American Synagogue Executives) Conference in 2007 and served as Education Co-chair of the organization’s National Conference in 2007. During retirement, Jeanne says, “I plan to cook more and take classes to improve my cooking skills. I also will spend more time traveling with Dan, especially to Portland, Oregon and Chicago to spend time with grandkids. Dan and I look forward to taking road trips to areas of the country where we haven’t been to before and sampling great food along the way.”

From Rabbi Beryl Padorr

At the beginning of D’varim, the 5th book of the Torah, he Jewish people are comfortable, on top of the mountain, looking across the Jordan River where they can see the Promised Land. They are so content and comfortable, that God has to

tell them to get off the mountain and move forward on their journey to the Promised Land. I have had the honor and privilege of serving at The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah, for close to five years. During this time, I hope that I have helped many of you connect with the congregation, other congregants, and Judaism as part of exploring your Jewish journeys. I’ve worked with some of you through our individual meetings. Some of you I have connected to a Chavurah and some to other groups within the congregation. Your Jewish journeys have expanded to include social action opportunities including Reaching In / Reaching Out initiatives, Chesed Cooks, serving meals at Center of Grace and Independence Boulevard Church, working in the Mitzvah Garden, and the Yarn Spinners. I’ve helped with the work of planning Senior Programing and more. And of course, Brotherhood and Sisterhood. I feel a special personal connection to so many of you through these different aspects of the congregation, teaching students and adults, the staff, and through the Pastoral care I have been honored to provide. You have added meaning and fulfillment in my life as well as a sense of my own connection and friendships. Many of you know that I attended rabbinical school later in life, and that my goal was to be a congregational rabbi. Now, sitting on my comfortable mountain, I have been offered the opportunity to move to another Promised Land beginning in August as the Rabbi at Ohev Sholom. I have been very happy here and will miss being with all of you on a regular basis. I want to thank you for letting me share in your lives and for all you have given me. May you all be blessed both with sitting comfortably on a mountain, and the joy of seeing and reaching your personal goals, your Promised Land. Rabbi Beryl Padorr
