Welcome to the Frosts Brighton National Speed Trials 2011. We the VMCC Sprint Section areextremely pleased to be invited back again to provide the Motorcycle entry for this event, probably themost prestigious event in the UK Sprint calendar today. We wish to thank our hosts Brighton and HoveMotor Club and Frosts for their continued support of this event, not forgetting you folks up on the "shelf"and walking around the open paddock, as without you there would be no Speed Trials.

I do hope that the weather gods are looking down favourably upon us this year, because aftersomething like seventeen years our luck finally broke last year and we experienced wet track conditionsall day. This extremely limited the motorcycles, with some riders only managing to put in a practice runlFor one particular rider however it worked completely in his favour, more of that later. I can't promiseyou good weather, but I can promise you a great selection of motorcycles and three wheelers from the1920's right up to the current day, with the likes of Malcolm Herwin on his 1928, 500cc DT Douglasthrough to Andrew Embling on his 2011, 675cc Triumph Street Triple A.

In the Consistency Class, Class 1, we have the welcome return of one of the great stalwart supportersof the sprinting fraternity, Frank Clarke. I'm sure Frank will not mind me telling you that he celebratedhis eightieth birthday earlier this year; and for me it was a privilege to be invited to go and celebrate theoccasion with Frank and his many friends. It truly was a great day. So here is Frank today, eighty yearsyoung, still sprinting and putting in some very respectable times with his much loved and used 1936Brooklands Norton JAP. Well done Frank.

When deciding upon who is to get an entry Into the speed trials (a task that I personally don't cherisheach year) we have always allowed the first and second place winners from each class, as well as thosewho make the top 6 run off, a place if they wish to enter. This is so they have the opportunity to defendtheir position and/or improve upon the previous year's results. This year has been no different. Howeverfor one man in particular, Steve Walton, this is going to be a mighty challenge. Last year in appallingconditions Steve took on the challenge and blew everybody else into the seaweed and cleaned up atthe prize-giving by taking the Dolphin Trophy for FTD, as well as rather large chunk of the othersilverware on offer home with him. To say that he was in a complete state of shock was an understate-ment. Roger Simmons was one of the first to congratulate Steve on his brilliant ride, a 11.01 secondrun with a terminal speed of some 143mph against Rogers 11.60 second run with a terminal speed of146mph. Did I say that it was raining at and that Roger was on full wet tyres as well? Not wishing totake anything away at all from Steve's brilliant achievement, but he will have to work extremely hard thisyear if the track conditions are dry and he wants to keep polishing all that silver, as Roger (who took thecourse record in 2009 with an absolutely blistering 8.73 second run with a terminal speed of 164mph)wants the Dolphin Trophy back. I wish them both the best for the day and they both, I know, will put ona good show for you the spectators.

This year we nearly lost one of our top riders from Class 7, Steve Wood, to the FIA European DragRacing Finals at Santa Pod. Steve was in two minds as to whether he should enter the Speed Trials ashe has been chasing down his times all year and was hoping to push them down even further at thePod. However the call of the Speed Trials is too strong and Steve decided to turn down a fully prep'ddrag racing strip and ride here at Madei[a Drive. Let's hope Steve can improve on his best ever timehere at Brighton - a 9.12 second run with a 156mph terminal speed back in 2009 - and brake into the8 second bracket. That would absolutely make his weekend, definitely if he picks up the Geetong Trophyalong the way to boot, again!

Finally, it just leaves me to say thank you all, enjoy your day on the seafront and have a safe journeyhome with all your memories of the day. We look forward to seeing you all again here in 2012.

VINTAGE AND HISTORICThe Vintage and Historic Class has always produced an interesting, if varied selectionof cars that made motor racing history in the pre-war thirties, and during the excitingpost war racing scene.

Perhaps the most outstanding event was the demonstration run by the Napier Railtonin 2009. However, looking over recent years the choice of runner up to the Napier isfar from easy. Would we choose the ex Raymond Mays ERA R4D, Roger Saul'sbeautiful Alfa Romeo P3 or perhaps the Halford Special which competed in the 1926British Grand Prix. Which of the many powerful Bentleys would be chosen, and theelegant Bugatti Grand Prix T37 and T35B cannot be overlooked. The evocative1916 Indianapolis Sunbeam and the 24 litre Hispano engine Delage surely mustbe included.

Without doubt the most exciting entry this year is the famous Ecurie-Ecosse ListerJaguar of well known historic racer David Ham, and must be favourite for a classwin. Brian Lister began producing sports racing cars during the 1950's The mostsuccessfull was the Lister-Jaguar driven by Archie Scott Brown who won 11 outof 14 races entered and either broke or equalled the lap record for sports cars inevery event entered during 1957. Sadly, Archie Scott Brown would lose his life ina major accident during bad weather at the Sports Car GP at Spa-Francorchampsin 1958.

As is a longstanding tradition at Brighton, as well as the outright class winner, wehave a race within a race. The VSCC Handicap. The eligible cars have handicaptimes set by the Vintage Sports Car Club who have detailed records of past performance of all entrants.

Rob Cobden in his methanol burning two stage supercharged Riley will be very quickand could well be in contention for the class win as well as the handicap. John Seberand Ron Turner with a pair of Wolseley Hornets could provide a sting with a surprisingturn of speed .. However, last years winner David Venables may have found someextra power for his elegant Aston Martin, and limit man Richard Ellingworth could welltake the trophy home with him at the end of the day.

The fun of a Handicap is that every driver has a sporting chance and a surprise winis always on the cards
