As we enter 2017, we are making a list of the resolutions that will help us improve in every aspect of our lives. We’d like to suggest that you add one to your list, make a resolution to save money on your next electric bill. We, at OPD, have compiled 5 of our favorite energy saving tips to get you started on the right track.

Close any unoccupied rooms. Close any unoccupied rooms that are isolated from the rest of the house, such as corner rooms, and turn down the thermostat or turn off the heating for that room or zone altogether. However, if it adversely affects the rest of your system, do not turn the heating off. Take advantage of “free solar power”. Yes it feels like the Sun has abandoned us during the winter, but that doesn’t mean we should ignore it during these shorter days. Open curtains and other window treatments on your west and south facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home, and save anywhere from 2 to 12%.

Use kitchen, bath and other ventilating fans wisely. These fans can pull out a houseful of warmed air in just one hour. Remember to turn these fans off as soon as they have done the job. Choose energy-saving lighting. About 10 percent of the energy your home uses goes to lighting costs. By just replacing five of your home's most frequently used lights with energy-efficient ENERGY STAR bulbs, you could save $75 a year in energy costs. Compared to traditional incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs can yield as much as 75 percent energy savings and last six-times longer. Maintain Your HVAC System. Make sure to clean or change your furnace filters regularly. A dirty furnace filter will slow down air flow, making the system work harder to keep you warm and costing you more money. Also, consider getting a winter tune-up, a semi-annual or yearly tune-up of your heating and cooling system can improve efficiency, saving you money and making your home more comfortable.

From all of us at Overton Power District No. 5 we wish you and your family a safe and prosperous 2017!
