and then after the news that we’ve lost our branch of Lloyds we find that from February will have no Dentist (because BUPA cannot afford the hike in rent inflicted by the Marisco practice as it also is faced with escalating

The last issue only had 3 bit of coastal news: A Grimsby ambulance coming 4 hours late to help a lady who had fallen in Lidl, & traffic offences committed by someone from Sutton & someone else from Trusthorpe. There were 3 pages of photos of the Louth Christmas Market: How many will be printed of our

Well there are District & Town Council elections due in May. Candidates are now being sought who will be happy to spend time promoting our coast. And we can all do this less formally. We need to talk up our locality. We need to make it a great place to live in so those further afield take it seriously.

MYSTERY PHOTO FROM AROUND 1957

THE SPORTS CENTRE…. PLANS FOR ITS REDEVELOPMENT

Our Sports Centre is built on the site of the old railway station & though it is on our main street you may well be forgiven for realizing it is there as it is hidden behind the disused toilet block & separated from the main thoroughfare by the run-down children’s playground & the car park. But if you do venture in you are assured of a great welcome with an enthusiastic staff running a whole variety of leisure facilities. So the clients are keeping fit: but is the centre itself keeping fit?

ELDC which owns the site has asked Magna Vitae to come up with a plan to revitalize this facility & ideas are coming forward ready to be presented to the Council in January.

There is a promise of capital investment for a rebuild or refurbishment of the Centre so it can provide a modern physical activity hub which will include facilities suitable to tackling the health & physical needs of Mablethorpe & its surrounding community.

Consideration will have to be given to how these assets might be managed to make the venue economically & socially viable.

What could be offered here to make the centre a real draw in our area? Different exciting elements of a business plan are being explored:

▸Teaching / Hydrotherapy Pool ▸ Catering ▸ Adventure play & Climbing ▸ A Day Spa ▸ A Fitness Studio (or studios) to offer

traditional gym & assisted exercise How could such facilities be created in such a way that major investment now can make them financially sustainable in the future? They need to provide both value for money but more crucially value for Mablethorpe.

We are told a family from Mablethorpe recently gained the great privilege of being able to take one of their children to the Pilgrim Hospital in Boston. Just before the operation they were explaining to the child’s mother the effects of administering an anaesthetic. “When he gets this,” they said, “he won’t know a thing.” “Oh don’t bother,” the mum replied. We’ve not only got no hospitals in Mablethorpe. We’ve no secondary school either. So he don’t know a thing as it is.”

FROM FÉ TOUSSAINT OUR NEW ENGAGEMENT OFFICER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AGENCY

Earlier this year the Environment Agency asked for your views on how flood risk on the Lincolnshire coastline between Saltfleet & Gibraltar Point could be managed over the next 100 years. Within the coastal flood risk strategy area, there are over 20,000 homes, approximately 24,500 static caravans & 35,000 hectares of farmland. Then there is our vital tourist industry!

Following an extensive & productive consultation, the Environment Agency is now working to develop a preferred strategy & delivery plan for flood risk management on the Lincolnshire coast over the next 100 years. The Environment Agency is working closely with its partners in local & central government to finalise the draft strategy document, which it plans to take forward to a public consultation in 2019.

While the Environment Agency is working to finalise the draft strategy, it is also continuing to plan next year’s beach nourishment campaign. As in previous years, Lincolnshire beaches will be replenished in 2019 to protect the sea defences & manage the risk of flooding to communities across the Lincolnshire coast.

If you have any questions about the strategy as it might affect your home, or about flood risk management along the Lincolnshire coast in general, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. You can ring me on 07584 183 691, write to me at Ceres House, Searby Road, Lincoln, LN2 4DT or email me on [email protected]

SOME REFLECTIONS

ON THE 2018 CARNIVAL

We estimated it would cost around £8,000 to stage, & with all expenses paid & a few more collection boxes to collect from shops & venues it looks as though we will be left with £1,000 to go towards next year’s event.

In addition to this we received a grant of £1,000 from the Lincolnshire County Council Community Collaboration Fund towards equipment. This has not been factored in to the above profit; but we have spent this gift on buying the gazebo & the extra sound equipment we needed for the registration point in Queen’s Park. These items, plus two A frame notice boards will be used at next year’s Carnival & will be there for other community groups to use when they are staging events.

POST SCRIPT: VIOLENCE HITS THE MABO STREETS… (& NOT A CCTV CAMERA IN SIGHT: JUST A FAKE NEWS REPORTER)

After the Xmas Celebrations Dave & Chloe were staggering home from the pub when Chloe pulled Dave back looking at a shimmering green dress in a shop window. “If you love me,” she says, “you’ll get me that.” So Dave puts a brick through the shop window & passes her the frock.

A bit later they’re passing a bag shop which has a stunning red hat on display. “If you love me Dave,” says Chloe, “you’ll get me that hat.” So Dave hurls another brick & picks up the hat for Chloe as it lies there amongst the shards of glass. She puts it on, a bit lopsided, but it suits, & Dave gets a good long kiss…

A few more staggered steps on & they reach Poynton’s which has some really swish shoes in their window. “If you love me Dave.” says Chloe, “you’ll get me those shoes.” At which point Dave turns & looks at Chloe & gives her a long stare & says, “Now look, Chloe, do you think I’m made of bricks?”

Autumn did not mean that our Fund Raising dried up. We would like to thank the Remington Club for hosting a Medley of Mediums. This raised a wonderful £550 … & we hope to be presenting another similar event in the spring. Then on November 16th the Blitz staged another Sausage & Mash night, this one accompanied by a game of Bingo. That raised another £100.

Then came our Late Night Shopping Night. The idea of this was to help local businesses & crafters & charities … but we asked £5 a stall from those taking part & these sums plus donations & our raffle, lucky dip & tombola raised (we think!) just over £350. So whereas last spring we started with nothing but good will, we now have around £2,000 already towards next year’s event. A big thank you to all those who helped with the Late Night Shopping… especially the Children’s Choir from KIDZ 2911, to Debs Barker for the cakes & truffles, to our Father Christmas(es!) and his Elves, and the hospitality extended by Social 22 for extra stall space.

Here’s an old postcard ▶

of Mablethorpe’s life boat.

Overleaf you will find a graphic story of a wreck off our coast in days when we must bear in mind how the crews had to row out to assist ships in danger in stormy conditions & the heavy lifeboats were pulled by horses across soft sand & into 5 foot of freezing water….

◀Huge numbers gathered at the War

Memorial on the 11th hour of the 11th Day of the 11th month to remember the many who had fallen in battle, & indeed were still falling, when the Armistice was declared 80 years ago. Remembered too were the many who have sacrificed their lives since then. A record 65 wreaths were laid from members of our community.

THE DEMISE OF THE OLIVE BRANCH

I was told this story by an old chap I befriended in Saltfleet in the mid 60s along with other tales of woe on the Lincolnshire coast. You may not think it is relevant to Mablethorpe but please read and you will find out why.

~ Mal

On the 16th November the “Olive Branch”, a three masted barque similar to the ships broken up on Mablethorpe beach, was caught in a gale that was so ferocious that her sales were shredded. With no power she drifted southwards. For 2 days she drifted till on the 19th she could anchor off Donna Nook but the sea had taken its toll on the vessel & she started shipping water.

The “Olive Branch” had been visible to two two coastguard stations: Donna Nook & Saltfleet.

Word had been sent to Donna Nook at 9 am to go & assist the “Olive Branch” but at 8 am she had been summoned to help another stranded vessel the "Nixie” aground at Tetney Haven.

The Saltfleet lifeboat had been called to the “Annie Florence” aground north of Saltfleet Haven and retrieved 3 sailors but another 2 were still on board. After putting the 3 men ashore they proceeded back for the other 3 men but could do nothing to help the “Olive Branch” despite seeing their flares. They rescued the other 2 men and returned to shore.

That same night the Mablethorpe lifeboat had been launched because a Brigantine, the "Lizzie Lee“, had run aground at Trusthorpe but they were not needed so returned by road.

On arrival were summoned to Saltfleet & so continued by road arriving after midnight. However They could not launch because of the tide so they started back to Mablethorpe along the coast. After half a mile a gun was heard and a rocket launched so turned round again towards Donna Nook They saw the “Olive Branch” about 4 miles off shore & with the tide out she looked to be intact & not in any danger ~ but they saw no one on board. They then again returned to Mablethorpe.

On board the “Olive Branch” Robert Rattenbury, a sea man, kept a fire burning through the night on deck. This was before Morse Code & Radio. He stated that the anchor chain parted about 8 am on the third day & by 11 am the vessel ran aground less than 1 mile north of Saltfleet Haven. The crew immediately run up the rear mast rigging for safety but by 11.30 the main & mizzen masts broke & crashed into the sea taking the crew with them. Rattenbury managed to cling to wreckage and was hauled out of the water by helpless onlookers. He was the only survivor. By 11.15 it was all over. The ship disappeared under the waves.

This then is an insight into a couple of nights work for the lifeboats on the Lincolnshire coast 120 years ago.

CHAMPIONING OUR COASTLINE!

An update from the DBID our Destination Business Improvement District

Event dates for 2019 are now booked & event planning is well underway including a Vintage by the Sea event in Sutton-on-Sea in May. We are gathering event dates now for 2019 so please let us know of any events happening in the area so we can include them in the on-line what’s -on guide.

We now have a promotional trailer that is scheduled to go to different parts of the country to help market our coast. We are contacting coach tour operators & encouraging excursions here with special offers (including complimentary meals for drivers!) We’ve had a good take up from businesses wanting to get involved in our group travel guide that will be out soon. Our promotional video of the natural coast is now ready & we’re now working on producing one for the traditional seaside holiday offer.

Following a series of meetings with local artists & sculptors our ARTS TRAIL that will take visitors all along the coast is progressing well.

We are working in partnership with ELDC on a dog friendly business scheme. We realize how important to our are this is & we want to promote those businesses that welcome dogs, from cafés, to accommodation providers!

The Mablethorpe BUSINESS WATCH radio aerial is ready to be installed & take-up of the scheme is excellent. This will be launched fully in January with the Police.

Graham Cullen of the Louth Hotel has been welcomed as a new director, replacing Gareth Rowland & Paddy Prince whom we thank for their work launching our project during its first year of operation.

TAKE AWAYS: 01507 473 216

Just wanted to let all of our loyal & wonderful customers know that we have taken on another business in town, located at the premises on High Street which was formerly known as Riff Raffs. The restaurant will be called The Pie in Hand, which was the building's previous name during its time in the early 1900s as a cafe & then a cinema, before it became an amusement arcade.

Liberty's will NOT be closing, nor is it being moved to the new venue. The two businesses will operate as two completely separate entities, with their own individual styles & menus. Both will, however, offer fantastic food in a great, friendly atmosphere. This is a wonderful opportunity for all involved, & with your support we believe we can provide a fresh & exciting new venture for Mablethorpe. Work is currently being carried out in order to get the place up & running as soon as possible.

Finally, whilst I am putting my all into The Pie In Hand, my heart will always be with The Dive.

Long live Liberty's!

Did you know on the Canary Islands there is not one canary? And on the Virgin Islands? - Same thing, not one canary either.

THE ME&DEE CHARITY

The Co-op each year names three community good causes so a percentage of all that members spend on Co-op produce in local stores is divided between the three causes. In 2019 one of those is this Charity about which Debbie Prince has written here:

If you had a loved one who was living with a life limiting condition... If your family was facing a short & uncertain future together… …you would want to make the time they had left together as special as possible … wouldn’t you?

The me&dee Derby based registered Charity was formed in 2006 by Maria Hanson MBE to create special memory experiences for when time is short & precious & to date more than 2,000 families have been helped through the support of our self-funding Charity.

We provide a free week’s seaside holiday in a luxury static caravan & a private sea front beach hut in Mablethorpe for families facing short & uncertain futures with life threatening & terminal conditions along with seriously injured members of the military.

We are just in the process of buying a disabled caravan so that we can reach out to more families but still need to raise a lot of money before we can purchase it. The Charity is tiny & self-funding so has to do all its own fundraising to ensure these families & seriously injured members of the military get their much needed holiday.

As Voluntary Fundraising Manager for the Charity I do all I can for the Charity. For the last 4 years I have organised a Half Marathon Walk, which to date has raised in total £17,440. Next year on Sunday 18th August 2019 will be the fifth year of the walk and I have a dream: I would love 100 people doing the half marathon walk raising £100 each. This is not an impossibility & just needs a bit of commitment so if you are interested in taking part please get in contact with me on 07415 297011 email [email protected] or go to the website www.meanddee.co.uk

ALSO… Next year on Friday 7th, Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June 2019, Debbie, Laura Franks, Sam Woodward, Dave Pepper, Gary Lewis & Alex De Berry will be walking 100 miles over 3 days for the me&dee Charity. They will be setting off from The Dunes Complex, Mablethorpe on Friday 7th June at 9:00am and will be arriving at Derby Conference Centre on Sunday 9th June.

Now this is a massive challenge & they are hoping to raise a lot of money for the me&dee Charity, so please look out for information on how you can sponsor them in the coming weeks.

SOME CHRISTMAS JOKES (IN CASE YOU RUN OUT OF CRACKERS!)

Our MP Victoria Atkins took this new initiative, bringing together a remarkable number of groups in our area who are catering for the needs & interests of our senior citizens.

A lot of you might know this year was our last season. From November 1st the Lookout Café had new owners. We've made some brilliant friends & have some lovely memories. Dennis is a young 73 & I get my OAP bus pass. Angelina & Ian Goggs are the new owners you will have seen them during this season: a lovely couple & we hope they are as happy in the café as we've been. Pat is going to be around to help in the busy periods. The café is going to be open 8am to noon weather permitting through the winter. We would like to thank all our customers for your custom through the years & for all our lovely cards & gifts. Pat & Dennis

So a wife is fishing for compliments under the mistletoe & asks her husband to describe her. He looks at her for a bit & says, “You’re really Alpha Betic!” Well she know what an Alpha Male is supposed to be but she hasn’t heard this expression before & asks him for an explanation. “You’re A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K.” He replies. She’s still not satisfied & asks him to go on & he says…. “You’re Adorable, Beautiful, Cute, Delightful, Elegant, Foxy, Gorgeous, & Hot!” She smiles happily but says "Oh, Darling ... that's so lovely, but what about I, J, K?" "I'm Just Kidding!” he replies. She forgets about the mistletoe, takes some holly from the table decoration & wham.
