What is happening at our School? Last Thursday, the Junior class attended a Teddy Bears Picnic excursion at Thalgarrah. The students and teachers had a great day. Mr McKenzie was really impressed with our outstanding manners.

A huge thank you to those parents who drove to Operation Art in Tamworth. It was an opportunity for students to engage in a variety of Art activities.

Next week the Travelling Zoo will be visiting our school. This will be on Tuesday at 12.40pm. The theme of the travelling Zoo will be Australian Native Animals. On Wednesday ‘A Blaze of Science’ will be demonstrating various science experiments. The students will then be participating in science workshops recreating some of the demonstrated experiments.

We also have a busy week in terms of sporting trials. We have the Northern Rugby Trials, District Touch Trails, District Netball Trials and the District Cross Country on Friday. We wish all our participants the best of luck.

This Thursday Jay Stone will be coaching and training our students from years 2-6 Athletics skills. This will run for 5 weeks. This program is being funded by the Sporting Schools grant.

Last Friday some of the children from the Senior class went down to Operation Art in Tamworth. It was a lot of fun and we really enjoyed it. First we warmed up doing a continuous line drawing of an elephant. Next we were given a brown piece of paper and a graphite stick and we were told to draw another elephant. Then we received a small amount of pigment that was rust coloured. We spread it around with our fingers to add more texture. Finally we outlined it with black ink, adding extra detail if needed. To stick to the elephant theme the next art work we did was an elephant statue made of clay. You are probably thinking “that’s easy!” But there was a twist. We had to make them behind our backs. We were allowed to smooth it down after but we had to keep it pretty much the same. The next activity was making a hanging wire sculpture of an elephant. The wire was made of aluminium so it was easy to bend. There was a different thickness and we could also use buttons for the eyes and tail. After that we had recess/lunch, we then went back inside. We were given a piece of A3 paper and paint and told to paint a jungle background. We had many shades of greens and yellows and only a little bit of red. We set it aside to dry and went down to the floor to see the demonstration on how to make a print. The subject this time was a tiger. First we drew a picture of a tiger on a piece of paper inside the rectangle we had drawn earlier. Next we outlined the tiger with black permanent marker. After that we put a piece of white foam over the piece of paper and traced it onto the foam. Next we took pencils and carved a groove on all the marker lines. We then went down to the floor and they showed us how to put the printing ink onto the foam then press it to a piece of either orange or black paper. We then got into 2 lines and the instructor placed our prints onto the ink and gave us a piece of paper. We then took our prints back to our table and pressed them to the centre of the page and rubbed the ink onto the paper. Next we took the foam off the paper to reveal our tigers. The next activity was cutting out our foam print tigers and gluing them to our jungle backgrounds we had made earlier. Finally, we placed the jungle background onto a piece of large card with your choice of colour. We were then released table by table to go and wash our hands and get a snack from our bags. We topped the day off with a presentation in which I had to get up and tell the parents that had just arrived all about what we had done. Then we picked up our artworks and went home.

The best gift we can give a child is the love of good books and the joy and benefits of good reading. Children who read at home, or are read to, have a head start on reading success in school. Our school is participating in Scholastic Book Clubs this year. Please find enclosed the Club catalogue with a different selection of books offered. You’ll find award-winning books, as well as old and new favourites. We recommend them because the books span a wide range of children’s reading levels and interests and because they are inexpensive (some books cost as little as $2). It is easy to order. This Issue’s catalogue is attached. Just look over the catalogue with your child, select the books you want, mark them on the order form on the back of the catalogue, and return the order form to the office by Wednesday 20/05/2016. You can pay for your order either by:

Bank Direct Deposit: Kelly’s Plains School BSB 032-001 Account: 142170 Description: Family Name (e.g. Smith) Book Order Cash Cheque

Parents can now use a new type of payment by credit card with this issue, called LOOP for parents when ordering online. The books will arrive around two weeks after the school order is sent to Scholastic. There is no better way to encourage reading than by giving children choice in their reading material. If you have any questions in regard to Scholastic Book Club Orders, please feel free to contact Martina on 0405 635 470.
