On tap for 2017 are a number of fun events. We will hold two socials on the MCBA building veranda, June and September. We’ll be NYC bound on May 20th. The Iron Pigs baseball game event will be held on June 18th. All fathers get in free! New monthly Member Mixers for all members of the Bar to socialize and network will be held on the last Thursday of each month from 5:00 - 7:00 at the Trackside in East Stroudsburg. And of course our Holiday Open House, which will be on Friday, December 1st.
We will also continue to provide you with numerous CLE opportunities close to home. In addition to the more traditional one hour lunch and learns, multiple programs are being organized with community partners to provide practice area specific programs. Our very popular Bench Bar Conference will once again be held at Northampton Commu-nity College Monroe Campus on Friday, September 29. Make sure you save the date!
I hope you will take advantage of all MCBA has to offer you. Your Board and the MCBA staff are committed to serving you. Watch your emails, read the quar-terly newsletter and visit our website to keep up with all MCBA is doing. Sugges-tions and comments are always welcome. Remember this is your Bar Association.

It is truly an honor to be the 37th Presi-dent of the Monroe County Bar Asso-ciation. I am excited and look forward to a very productive year building upon the contributions and successes of my predecessors. You, the members, are our Association’s greatest resource, and with your assistance, we will to continue to improve, and advance the interests of, this great organization.
A very sincere thank you, and kudos, to Jeff Durney for a very successful year as our President in 2016. It involved a substantial amount of time and effort that was always selflessly given. He is unquestionably a hard act to follow.
One of my objectives this year is to review, analyze and address the chal-lenges we are currently experiencing related to membership retention and involvement. The first in a series of joint meetings among the members of the MCBA and YLD Boards was recently held to begin the process of identifying and implementing new and expanded opportunities for mentoring, networking and collegiality. Please do not hesitate to let us know any thoughts, suggestions or comments you may have regarding this important matter.
Over the past several years we have been implementing the strategic plan which was adopted in 2014, and have accom-plished much of what we set out to do. During the next several months the Strategic Planning Group will begin the process of developing updated priori-ties and goals of the Association. Those priorities and goals will be guided by the responses received from you to a survey
currently under development. I there-fore ask that you please take the time to complete the survey when you receive it, as this will be a key tool in planning our organization’s future.
By now you have all received your 2017-2018 pictorial directories. A few new features have been added which we hope are beneficial to you. In a departure from the past, we expect to update the directory quarterly and provide you with a printable version each quarter. There-fore, please notify MCBA staff if any of your information changes.
We had the privilege earlier this month of hosting the regional mock trial competition. Both participating teams did a truly remarkable job. There are numerous ways to participate in the mock trials, and I strongly encourage all of you to do so in the future (they begin again in November). You will not only be contributing to a very worthwhile educational program, but will find the experience both interesting and enjoy-able.
Just a reminder that our local celebra-tion of national Law Day, the purpose of which is to highlight the rule of law in America and our respect for the same, will occur on Friday, April 28. Please make every effort to attend and participate. Also the 2017 Commu-nity Night sponsored by the Monroe County Local Children’s Roundtable has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 9th, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Monroe Campus of Northampton Community College, Keystone Building, 2411 Rt. 715, Tannersville, PA. MCBA has committed to providing the Monroe County Bar Foundation with $125,000 for the 2017 year. The MCBF Board is honored that the MCBA Board has the confidence in us. We will continue to invest all the funds into our community bringing pride to both organizations.
Thank you to the MCBF Trustees for their time and talents. You may think that giving away money is easy, but we’ve found it’s harder than one might think because you always have to say no to organizations that are in need.
As a matter of business, we’ve created a data base of local non-profit 501(c)3 organizations. In February the staff of MCBA mailed this year’s grant application and rule packets out to over 30 organizations. If you know of an organization that may be in need, please send their contact information to Denise at [email protected] and she’ll reach out to them.
Your donations will allow us to continue providing scholarships to local public school students furthering their education in the field of law. We hope to once again award a $1,000 scholar-ship to a Pocono Mountain East athlete in memory of Judge Ronald Vican. Sponsorships for non-profit events and programs will continue as well. We appreciate all the support that you, as members, continue to give the Foundation each and every year.

One tradition we’re sticking with is our mentor lunches. The opportunity to talk with more experienced lawyers is invaluable to us. We learn not just about the practice of law in Monroe County, but about life in the county. We learn how to be better lawyers for our clients and how to balance work, home and community. Thank you to all of those who have joined us for lunch and to all those who will!

The YLD is starting off with a bang this year! Ok, so not really a bang, but more of a plan. If you haven’t noticed, the number of YLD members is declin-ing a bit in Monroe County. So we sat back, and thought how do we do more with less?
After some discussion at our first quar-terly meeting we made some decisions.
This year we are adopting a non-prof-it agency for the year. Our goal is to support them by working with them on their various projects they undertake. We’ll paint rooms, do yard work or
attend community activities. Last year several of the YLD members had the opportunity to meet members of the board and clients of Burnley at the Law Day Run and were impressed with what they do. For us Burnley Employment and Rehab Services was an easy choice for 2017.
We also will get out of our circle of ‘Young Lawyers’. Starting in March we will coordinate a monthly Member Mixer. Everyone is invited so consid-er joining us on the last Thursday of each month at the Trackside in East Stroudsburg from 5:00-7:00. Appetiz-

Attorney Hillary Hall, Law Clerk for President Judge Margherita Patti-Worthington, is a recent graduate from Syracuse University College of Law. While attending law school, Hillary participated in the Criminal Defense Clinic and was involved in Moot Court. She also received the “Orange Pro Bono” Award for her over 100 hours of pro-bono work and community service. Prior to law school, Hillary attended Elizabethtown College where she majored in Political Science and Sociology and minored in Business Adminis-tration. She was involved with Colleges against Cancer and worked closely with the American Cancer Society. The highlight of her undergrad career was when she studied abroad in Greece for 4 months.
Hillary aspires to be a Public Defender and to dedicate her legal career to protecting the Constitutional rights of indigent individuals accused of violating the law.
In her free time, Hillary enjoys snowboarding, hanging out with her twin brother and listening to podcasts on her commute to work.

Abington Heights went onto State Mock Trials after defeating Pocono Mountain East High School in a heated March 9 Regional Competi-tion hosted by Monroe County Bar Association at Monroe County Courthouse in Stroudsburg. Arguably an intriguing battle of wits over the hypothetical case of arson, held a captive audience in Courtroom One.
Students portraying prosecution and defense attorneys, along with witnesses and a defendant, stood before Judge David Williamson and a jury comprised of MCBA legal professionals. Deter-mining a winner based on the team’s ability to prepare their case, present arguments and follow court rules, Abington took the title following jury deliberation.
Pausing to applause one another, both teams awarded Best Advocate and Best Witness honors to the other with Abington’s Anna Moher and Alex Klucher, then East’s Michael Medaugh and Christian Bethea receiving recognition.
While only one team could claim victory, all seized top attention illustrating dedication, profes-sionalism and the art of persuasion. Monroe

County Court of Common Pleas Judge and 30-year Mock Trial coordinator Jonathan Mark applauded and reminded, “Now stop and smell the roses and have some fun.”
Pointing out the “Cross Sections of Society” that took part in making Mock Trials possible from legal professionals, advisors, and courthouse coordinators; to parents who’ve devoted time and support for participants’ pursuit in the unique opportunity, he stressed, “Think of how difficult it is to do the Mock Trials.”
Encouraging with a smile alongside fellow coor-dinator Magisterial District Judge Michael Muth to continue career aspirations that may have risen by the experience, he noted with a smile, “Most colleges have teams.”
