MINI MAGGIE’S IN THE FOREST

Maggie’s have recently launched a new project for anyone affected by cancer in theForest of Dean and surrounding area. This has been funded by the Gloucestershirethriving communities team. We will be at The Main Place Coleford on the 1st and 3rd

Tuesday of the month from 9.30am-4.30pm.Maggie’s Cancer Care Centres are places where people can go for help and support withany of the problems or challenges that they, or a person they care about, face after adiagnosis of cancer. Under one roof you can access cancer information and support fromone of our Cancer Support Specialists (who have a nursing background), get practical helpand meet other people who are facing similar challenges. The team are now thrilled to be able to offer this support within your local community ona twice monthly basis. The programme of support offered will include Tai Chi, Yoga,Nordic walking, relaxation and a course for people after treatment, plus much more . Acopy and explanation of our programme can be accessed via our website, Facebook pageor by calling in to see us!Maggie’s is importantly not just about the person living with cancer but also about lookingafter those who love and support that person – be that friend, partner, colleague, parentor child. We know that carers can often feel as frightened and vulnerable as those livingwith the disease.Maggie’s philosophy is ‘don’t lose the joy of living in the fear of dying’. If you know or hearof anyone who is living with, or supporting someone living with cancer please do let themknow about Maggie’s – everyone with cancer should get the support they deserve. You don’t have to make an appointment, or be referred just drop in ! Winter is not my favourite time to foragehere in the forest. The odd oystermushroom, some interesting salad greensin the form of chickweed, herby bittercress or young dandelion leaves, butnothing of any real Interest. However should you like me enjoy thesolitude of a beautiful winter beach orcoastal walk then there are still pickingsaplenty. There are over 30 varieties ofedible seaweed, razor clams, winkles andwonderful sweet mussels.Take a little gas stove, a pan with a lid anda couple of ingredients on that walk andboom, you could be sat on that beachenjoying the freshest seafood, dippingcrusty bread into a beautiful garlicky winesauce and making unforgettable memories.

But Please, only take mussels if there is anR in the month, check the water quality ofthe area and don't over harvest!

1kg or as many as you find of mussels50g (1¾oz) unsalted butter1 medium onion and 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped50ml (2fl oz) dry white wine1 tbsp roughly chopped fresh parsley

Wash the mussels well. Scrape away anybarnacles with a small stout knife. Pull offthe beards and wash again. Discard anythat are open and do not close whentapped.Add the mussels, butter, onion, whitewine and half the parsley to your pan andset over a fierce heat keeping the lid on,apart from the occasional stir. When theyare all open, remove from heat and leavefor 30 seconds to let any grit settle to thebottom of the pan.Sprinkle over the rest of the parsley, patyourself on the back and dive in to thetastiest foraged meal ever.
