They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?” 4 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.” 5 The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israel- ites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?” A Grumbler or a Grumble: In his book, The Great Divorce, C.S. Mark 12:28-31

The Danger of Grumbling

Exodus 17:1-7: The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place

to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to

drink. 2 So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.”

Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?” 3 But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you

bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?” 4 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone

me.” 5 The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel

and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 I will stand there before you by

the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did

this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israel-

ites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

A Grumbler or a Grumble:

In his book, The Great Divorce, C.S. Lewis gives an

account of one of his characters giving a seemingly endless list

of complaints. This woman’s breathless monolog of whining

continued over an entire page punctuated with only commas,

semicolons and ellipses without a single period – just one

loooong sentence. An on-looker to this woman’s pitiful rant

suggested to his mentor that the woman was not a bad sort, just

simply a grumbler. The wise older gentleman gave an interest-

ing response, “The question is whether she is a grumbler, or only a grumble.”

Speaking about grumbling he said,”…it begins with a grumbling mood, and yourself still distinct

from it: perhaps criticizing it. And yourself, in a dark hour, may will that mood, embrace it. (You) can

repent and come out of it again. But there may come a day when you can do that no longer. Then there

will be no you left to criticize the mood, nor even to enjoy it, but just the grumble itself going on forever

like a machine.” —Kim Howdyshell

Adam & Jamie Green are continuing their work

with CHINA NOW. On Wednesday, July 11, they

will tell us about their work in China and they can

talk more freely about their ministry than they can

while in China. Campus Church has contributed to

Jamie & Adam’s support by helping them pay for

health insurance, which is not provided to them by the university where

they work. After their presentation on 7/11, we will have an opportun-

tiy to support this mission with a special collection. CHINA is a huge

country but we have this opportunity to reach them for Christ, one on

one. Make checks payable to Campus Church of Christ, with a note

indicating China mission.
