Dear Third Grade Families, The students watched a short video on Our Lady of Guadalupe and took notes as they were watching, which they used to compose their writing piece. The students created beautiful paper flowers with the image of Our Lady which line the hallway outside our classrooms as well as got to create their own tilmas, in which they were very excited that they got to wear them! We will continue to discuss Mexico by going back and studying the Mayan people and how they live, work, play, and pray. In science we have been learning about butterflies and their life cycle. Both third grades have butterflies in the pupae stage (cocoon/chrysalis). The children were very excited to observe our caterpillars attach themselves to the top of the jar lid and create a cocoon. We must have modest butterflies because they created their cocoons while we were at lunch! The students A lot of learning has been taking place! The students have almost finished their first writing piece for Mexico, which was focused on Our Lady of Guadalupe who appeared to Juan Diego in Mexico on December 9, 1531, and asked that a church be built on the site. When Juan told the bishop, the bishop demanded a sign that it was really Mary who appeared to Juan and made this request. Mary made roses appear in the middle of winter on a rocky, desert hill and had Juan collect them. When Juan brought the roses to the bishop in his tilma and dropped the roses there was an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the tilma that miraculously appeared. A church was built on the site and the tilma is still on display. There are many miracles attributed to Our Lady of Guadalupe and she is the patron saint of Mexico. This occurrence helped to bring many people to Christianity.

are eager to see the butterflies emerge from their chrysalis. I am sure they will tell you about this metamorphosis when it occurs! In math we have been continuing our study of perimeter and area as we look at shapes with the same perimeter, but different area, and vice versa. There was a multiplication quiz on Friday to reinforce the necessity of memorizing the multiplication facts. The students should be continuing committing the facts to memory as we approach the end of the school year. There will be a test on Perimeter this Thursday. The students have been practicing their handwriting as well as learning how to properly write in script. We will be continuing this practice the rest of the school year. Sincerely, Ms. McCarthy and Mrs. Penny Reminders
