Last June, I journeyed out of my comfort zone, and into a world like nothing I had ever seen before. I went to a place where beauty was all around me. Last summer, I traveled to Ecuador. However I didn’t go there to experience the beauty of nature or culture. I went there to make a difference, on a mission, to reach the children of a world on the opposite side of our spectrum. Little did I know I would return with more from them then I could have given back. The fourth day of our nine-day trip was the hard-est. In a way I felt like I had already conquered the world. I had reached children who had, at one time, seemed out of reach. However I had also

started to feel empty. I had begun to feel as if I had already given all that was within me. That’s when I met Marquel, a six-year-old living in a small town just four hours away from the dangerous jungles of Ecuador. Although he didn’t speak a drop of English, I learned that love can break the stron-gest of barriers—even language barriers. Marquel came to me as I was painting one of the walls in the schoolhouse. At first I was con-fused. Marquel, unlike the other children who belonged to the school, was dressed in street clothes. (I would learn later that this is because he didn’t go to the school. He lived on top of the mountain the school was on and seldom did he,

or his family, come down.) As he walked up to me all I could think of was how to tell him I didn’t have any more food, or what-ever he was going to inquire about. That’s when this little boy changed my heart. As Marquel neared my side he didn’t say a word. He simply lifted a paintbrush off of the floor and began to help me. From that moment on the trip was different. It didn’t matter what I wore or owned, just that I made a change. And it was Marquel that showed me I had. Later, after he left, I couldn’t help but wonder about him. As the day came to an end, we were all tired and eager to get back on our bus and return to camp. Just as I was about to step on to the bus Marquel tapped me on my back. I turned around and he threw his arms around me. He looked into my eyes and said, “ Eres mi mejor amiga en el mundo. Te Bonita.” In English this means, “ You are my best friend in the whole world. You are Beautiful.” This little boy taught me more about beauty then anyone I had ever met. He handed me the most beau-tiful flowers, not because of what they looked like, but because of the little boy who gave them to me. He was beautiful. Beauty is so much more then what we see in the mirror. Beauty is also what we give to the world.

Beauty is so much

more then what

we see in the mirror.

Beauty is also what we give to

the world.

Sara Tomedi tunes into beauty and fashion trends filtered through the art of album covers and music. Photography by Cassie Doumas.

Mention the album Like a Virgin, and the first image that comes to mind is the Madonna outfit, mimicked by fans around the world: a beat-up dress, fingerless gloves, a mishmash of chains, lots of leather and twice the lace. And huge scrunched hair.

Over the decades, music and fashion have always been uniquely inter-twined, and probably will be for as long as we listen to our favorite songs while we root through our closets in the morning. We’ve gotten bell- bottom jeans and long, sleek hair from Cher, eyeshadow tips from Debbie Harry of Blondie, the power and beauty of the androgynous suit from Annie Lennox of The Eurythmics, and wildly colorful, sometimes gender-bending looks from David Bowie, Prince, and Freddie Mercury. George Michael made leather jackets go from cool to a necessity. Michael Jack-son brought back the Frank Sinatra hat. And though we might like to for-get them, MC Hammer started the balloon pant trend of the ’80s.

Music and fashion are as tight as the Bee Gee’s white leather pants. The ’60s wouldn’t have been the same without the layered, flowing dresses of Stevie Nicks. And what would grunge have been without Nirvana? Musicians have been an immense influence in the design world, and now we can actually see the two creative spheres blending with numerous artists creating their own clothing lines.

Beyonce, JLo, Jessica Simpson, Diddy, and Jay-Z have all developed very successful businesses in the fashion world. So what happens when the artist becomes the designer? It means that getting dressed is easier than ever. Fans can go out and buy their favorite albums, and then get the clothes to match. Fashion and music have had a long and happy mar-riage, and the addition of artists as designers should be the perfect touch to make everything new, maybe even…like a virgin.

bEAUTY NOTE

“Use lipliner to plump your pout and make lips stand out. I prefer to use a rosy color (it matches my skin tone) and lightly fill in lips. This makes a lip stain that lasts and creates the look of naturally colored lips. Remember to not make harsh, dark lines. Too dated.” (SA)

From elegantly active to bright and boyish, this season’s key looks boast bravado. By Samantha Leal. Photographed by Chloe Johnson andAlexis Thompson

tiMe oF tHe season

Sporty Spice would be proud! This season’s look gives us track pants, sport shorts, and track jack-ets, while visors, sweatbands, and of course, sporty sneakers help to tie the look together. What makes these pieces more interesting than your daily workout-wear are the designers’ use of color. Notable designers made the elements pop with orange, yellow, pink and even neon green. For a subtle sport look, try pairing a bright polo with jeans and striped sneakers. Or go sportier: pair track pants with a bright tank top and top it off with a track jacket. For makeup, keep colors to a minimum and focus on getting a flushed look by applying a creme blush (try Dior’s Pro Cheeks Blush) to the apples of cheeks and blending outward. You can even put a little on your lips to brighten those. (creme blush always looks darker in packaging, so keep that in mind when choosing your color.) Define your eyes with a little bit of mascara (Try Diorshow Mascara) and you’re ready to run to the gym … or at least look like you did.

TREND REPORT

Urban flair with some pop is one way to describe the newest trend. Vibrant colors, abstract pat-terns, tribal prints and graffiti paint elements dominated the runways. To keep the look simple, wear mostly solid colors while popping the outfit with one printed piece. For more of a statement, try pairing different prints and patterns together, while staying in the same color family. Keep the look fun and urban by creating a streak of color from the eyelid and extending it out past the outer corner of your eye. Follow with a vibrant lip gloss shade, such as fuchsia.

TREND REPORT

The preppy boy look is popping up all over the place. Think Annie Hall meets Gossip Girl’s schoolboy style. Blazers with bold shoulders and boyish shapes, men’s neck-ties, and trousers are all staples of this preppy boy look. Try pairing a blazer with a great fitted tee and fitted shorts. Or for a more dynamic look, marry a button-down shirt with a great solid color vest, necktie, and Bermuda shorts. To complete the outfit, try neutral makeup. Sweep a brown eye shadow on the eyelid, but not past the crease. Line eyes with a brown eyeliner: at the top, extend the liner a bit past the corner of your eyes for a cat’s eye. Define your lashes with a plumping mas-cara. Use a bronzer/blush duo to highlight cheeks by sweeping the bronzer slightly under your cheek-bones, and the blush on top. Follow with a nude lipstick.

Sometimes outer beauty is a result of how you treat your body and your mind. Clare Dougan should know. Clare, 13, has never been a slacker. “My whole life, I have been healthy and athletic. It’s very important to me,” she explains. Even from the beginning, that held true. Taking up dance at age four, then gymnastics, jazz, tap, and ballet. Just a year later, she began playing lacrosse and soccer. If that wasn’t enough: at seven, she landed on a competitive travel dance team, prac-ticing 20-30 hours a week. “For a few years I danced, played soccer and played lacrosse, “she says, “I en-joyed being involved in all of these activities, but around age 10 I decided that I loved playing soccer and lacrosse the most.” What got her through her Bionic Woman-like years of dance and sports? “Eating healthy foods, getting enough rest, and having a good bal-ance,” Clare explains, adding “I get good grades, enjoy school and have a busy social life.” She also manages to play recreational soccer, and even travel lacrosse. “The best part is meeting new people, getting to go places, being part of a team and playing the sports I love.” And never being bored.

Achingly soulful ballads and magnificently inspired acoustics arouse feelings of nostalgia, heartbreak, and hope for the future. Nada Surf solidifies their status as legitimate indie rockers with their fifth record, Lucky. They pack it full of gut-wrenching melodies and lyrical tales of angst.

Readers of Lorrie Moore’s collection of nine short stories, Self-Help, will feel as if they are emotionally channel surfing. Moore’s pieces move rapidly from shocking to heart-wrenching to hilariously witty in her recently re-released book of tales about love, loss, relationships and what it means to be a woman. (ST)

An engrossing fiction novel about a smart girl who leaves the Midwest behind in favor of an elite East Coast boarding school, Prep captures the drama of teenage life and presents it semester by semester. Sometimes witty, sometimes heartfelt, but always entertaining, Prep is sure to please anyone who’s ever felt the urge to belong. (SL)

Alicia Keys wowed us all with her two previous albums, and does the same with this new R&B-inspired album. As I Am shows us a more personal style of this R&B songstress with flawless hits like “No One” proving that Alicia Keys is indeed a diva on top of her game. (DE)

Inara George, half of the duo known as The Bird and the Bee, has a hypnotic quality to her voice on the self-titled album. Running along the same lines as Feist and Rilo Kiley, George’s smooth soprano lilts over catchy rhythms and toned-down techno beats. (ST)

Although Taylor Swift’s self-titled album was released in 2006, this talented country music artist/songwriter is just beginning to gain the recognition she deserves. Her album features songs such as “Tear Drops on My Guitar, and “Tim McGraw,” both of which were inspired by real-life experiences. Her upbeat ballads, and soft, youthful voice distinguishes this country star from any others. (DE)

The Darjeeling Limited soundtrack is the perfect background music for all-night study sessions. With a mix of Indian, French, and British musical influences topped with a dash of The Kinks, it’s a better blend than a caramel macchiato when it comes to staying awake to hit the books. (ST)

The Afters’ sophomore release bridges the gap between angst-ridden alternative rock and paradoxically happy pop tunes. Catchy melodies and infectious beats help drive the lyric-heavy record, with tongue-in-cheek numbers like “Myspace Girl.” Never Going Back to OK is the perfect compilation for rainy afternoons or sleepy-eyed weekends! Diorskin Airflash is surprisingly light and easy to apply. If you hold the foundation can an arm’s length from your face, close your eyes, and spray, then applying foundation has just become a three-second routine!

Diorshow Powder in pink is a very subtle illuminator for the face. This loose powder is perfect for a glowing face early in the morning, evening, or night. It gives a dreamy, sparkling, healthy look to the skin. If you are bored with ordinary browns and blacks, Diorshow Unlimited Mascara in blue is a beautifully shocking fix!
