A look back at the 2001 Florida Senior Games State Championships Archery -- December 1, 2001 -- Cypress Gardens With the highest score of the day, Myers Parrish of Sarasota set a Florida Senior Games State Championships recording an 864, out of a possible 900, in the 65-69 age division of the Compound Release competition. Parrish outscored the silver medallist Hank Farro, who shot the second-highest score of the day with an 855, by nine points. Badminton -- December 2, 2001 -- Kelly Recreation Center Lakeland's James Ho breezed through the Men's Singles 60-64 age group winning three matches to capture his third consecutive gold medal in his age group. Ho, a bronze singles medallist and silver men's doubles medallist at the 2001 National Senior Games, also won a gold medal in mixed doubles teaming with Anne Lyon. Basketball Shooting -- November 29, 2001 -- Kelly Recreation Center 76-year old Andy McGuffin, of Umatilla, swept through free throw, spot field goal and timed field goal shooting winning gold medals in each. In free throw shooting, he recorded the first perfect 30 for 30 performance in Florida Senior Games State Championships history. McGuffin is a 17-time basketball shooting champion dating back to 1994 and has won the free throw and spot field goal shooting in the 75-79 age group for the past three years. 3-on-3 Basketball -- November 30-December 1, 2001 -- Kelly Recreation Center The Clearwater Aces went undefeated in the 60+ age group to claim the gold medal in the 60-64 division. The Aces won five games and beat WKS 40-27 in the championship game. In the 50+ age division, Mike's Gang of St. Petersburg won all five of its games en route to the gold medal. Bowling -- November 27-28, 2001 -- Interstate Lanes 86-year old Don Long from Merritt Island set a record for the 85-89 age group in the Men's Singles Bowling competition rolling a combined three game total of 599. It bettered the previous record of 523, set by James Stanford of Lake Worth, in 1995, by 63 pins. Long's three game total featured individual games of 222, 204 and 173. His gold medal winning performance bested the second place finisher by 98 pins. In the women's singles competition, Sebring's Evelyn Gooding topped her own record in the 75-79 age group by two pins with a three game total of 525. She set the age group record at the 2000 Florida Senior Games State Championships with a 523 in Kissimmee. The high singles score belonged to Sarasota's Jim Ord, who rolled a three game total of 660 to take the gold medal in the 60-64 age group. Ord had individual game totals of 245, 202 and 213. The high women's score was recorded by Pat Roberts of The Villages with a 615. Roberts had the highest overall single game total of the day with a 246. Joan Haytaian and Terry Welch of Sebring set a Florida Senior Games State Championships women's doubles record for the 55-59 age group rolling a 1091. Haytaian had a three game total of 594 and Welch totaled 497 in their record-breaking effort. It topped the previous record that stood since 1995 by 44 pins. Haytaian's three-game total consisted of 200, 205 and 189 games

Cycling -- November 29 & December 1, 2001 -- Villages of Poinciana Carol Jean Vosburgh of St. Petersburg, Arnold DeHart of Naples and Victor D'alessio of Port Orange each set records for their age groups in the 10K competition. Vosburgh had a time of 17:24 to break the previous record in the 55-59 age group by :02. DeHart's time of 17:13 bettered the previous mark in the 75-79 age group by :23. D'alessio time of 19:27 broke his own record, set last year, by :05. Golf -- November 30, 2001 -- Cleveland Heights Golf Course Brian Jeffrey of Lakeland recorded the lowest score of the day at the 2001 Florida Senior Games State Championships Golf Tournament with a 70 and established a new record for the 55-59 age group. Jeffrey's score tops the previous record by one stroke and is the second lowest-score in Florida Senior Games State Championships history. The all-time low score is 68. Also, Gary Bronson of Clearwater, won the 65-69 age group competition for the third consecutive year with a 73, the second-lowest score of the day. Sarah Huneycutt of Indian Lake Estates had the lowest score of the day in the women's competition with an 82 to win the gold medal in the 65-69 age group. Horseshoes -- November 30, 2001 -- Rotary Park Patsy Kontz of Kissimmee and Walter Chalfant of Mulberry won championships in their age group for the fourth consecutive years. Kontz won the 60-64 age group while Chalfant took the gold in the 75-79 age group. Chalfant also won a silver medal at the 2001 National Senior Games. 1500 Meter Race Walk -- December 1, 2001 -- George Jenkins High School Ft. Lauderdale's Denny DeMauro and Bartow's Mary Borque established new records in the 75-79 age group as DeMauro posted a time of 10:07.62 and Borque crossed the finish line at 13:13.56. Tallahassee's Gene Opheim had the fastest time of the day with a 7:39.98. He missed topping his own record in the 50-54 age group, set in 1998, by .84 of a second. Racquetball -- November 28-29, 2001 -- Lakeland YMCA George Peskar, of Malabar, won a singles gold medal for the third consecutive year topping the 75-79 age group after taking the gold in the 70-74 age group at the 1999 and 2000 Florida Senior Games State Championships. Peskar also won Florida's only racquetball medal in the 2001 National Senior Games with a gold. Shooting -- December 1-2, 2001 -- Polk County Trap & Skeet Gary Odell of Lakeland posted a perfect score of 100 in the trap shooting competition to take the gold medal in the 65-69 age group. Stuart Laeder of Lakeland and John Stenger of Brooksville, were one shy of Odell's perfect score with 99, as Laeder won the gold in the 70-74 age group and Stenger won the 60-64 age group. Stenger also won a gold medal in skeet shooting with a score of 83 out of a possible 100. Shuffleboard -- November 27-28, 2001 -- Lake Mirror Civic Complex Roger Hammond of Zephyrhills, won the 55-59 age group for the third consecutive year. In the women's competition, Anna Duffy of Lakeland, won the gold medal in the 85-89 age group after winning the 80-84 age group at the 2000 Florida Senior Games State Championships in Kissimmee. In doubles competition Roger Hammond and Bud Trommater, of Zephyrhills, repeated as doubles champions in the 55-59 age group.

Softball -- November 30-December 1, 2001 -- DiamondPlex Snappy Tomato Pizza, of The Villages, swept through the Men's 50+ competition undefeated scoring 43 runs in three games to take the gold medal. In a 12-3 championship game win over Lakeland Sun Trust, Snappy Tomato Pizza had a six-run second inning and its defense even pulled off a triple play. Swimming -- November 29-30, 2001 -- Gandy Aquatic Center The 2001 Florida Senior Games State Championship Swimming competition saw a total of 46 age group records fall. Leading the way with five records broken in the 60-64 age group was Sperry Rademaker, of Floral City, who was entered in six events. Rademaker set new marks in the 50 and 200 yard freestyle, 50 yard butterfly, 100 yard backstroke and 200 yard individual medley. Her record-setting time in the 200 yard individual medley broke the mark set by Patricia Bond, of Bradenton in 1999, by 11 seconds. Table Tennis -- November 28, 2001 -- Polk Community College Sari Kisbany, of Redington Shores, won her sixth consecutive women's singles championship taking the gold medal in the 70-74 age group. Kisbany won the 65-69 age group title from 1996-99 and has won the 70-74 age group for the past two years. Also taking a gold medal in the 90+ age group was the 2001 Florida Senior Games State Championships oldest participant, 95-year old John Donnelly of Sun City Center. Tennis -- November 28-December 1 -- Lakeland City Courts Veterans Park Lakeland's Dave Dean won his fourth Senior Games singles gold medal winning the 65-69 age division. Dean, the top seed in his division, defeated Dale Nofzinger, of Lady Lake, 6-1, 7-5 in the championship match. Dean also teamed with Don Wilder, of Sebring, to win the men's doubles 60-64 gold medal. The duo defeated Dick Moffatt and Roy Nyren, of Zephyrhills 6-2, 6-2 in the finals. In the women's singles competition, Carolee Ogburn of Clermont, won her fourth consecutive gold medal defeating Charolette Millsaps, of Gainesville, in the 65-69 age group finals. Track & Field -- December 1-2, 2001 -- George Jenkins High School Records were set for 12 age group running events at the 2001 Florida Senior Games State Championships Track & Field competition. Melbourne's Wayne Hansen recorded the fastest times in Florida Senior Games State Championships history in the 100 and 200 meter dash. Hansen broke his own record in the 200 meter dash (55-59 age group) with a 25.24. His previous record of 26.66 was set in 1999. Hansen also set a record for his age group in the 100 meter dash with a 12.31. Hansen's time in the 100 yard dash was .001 quicker than the time of 12.32 clocked by Bennett Darbeau, of Miami, who set a new record in the 50-54 age group. In the field events competition a total of 30 records fell. Leading the way in records broken was 70-year old Len Olson of Daytona Beach with new marks in the shot put, discus throw and javelin. Also setting three new records was 91-year old Allen Bjork of Sebring with high marks in the shot put, discus throw and javelin. Volleyball -- December 1, 2001 -- Florida Southern College The Silverbacks of Malabar won the gold medal in the 50+ Division defeating the previous year's gold medal winning Pensacola Masters. The Silverbacks scored a 25-21, 25-22 victory over the Pensacola Masters to secure the gold medal.
