David Rastovich was born in New Zealand. He moved to Australia when he was six years old. He was always fascinated by the sea. He started off as a young lifeguard and then moved on to surfing. The competitions that he won showed everybody that he was a great talent. But he realised that he didn’t like com-petitions very much and so he changed direction. A sponsor paid him to surf and film in exotic locations around the world … a great job for him. Now, he also makes surfing films himself.Rasta is well known and respected for his alternative lifestyle. He does yoga every day and meditates, too. He also grows his own organic vegetables and works to find ways of making surfboards more eco-friendly.
He is passionate about the sea and everything that lives in it. For example, Rasta supports campaigns to stop the killing of whales and dolphins, especially in Japanese waters. At the end of 2012, he paddled 350 km up the west coast of New Zealand on his surfboard to protest against plans to mine minerals from the seabed in that area. If the planned mining goes ahead, a rich marine habitat will be lost forever.

Sample story for the teacher
I’d like to tell you about a very unpleasant holiday I had. Some time ago, I went to one of the Greek islands with a friend. The idea was to enjoy some sunny days and relax before the colder season would begin. When we arrived at the hotel, some-one came to speak to us. It was bad news. The hotel was over-booked. This was unbelievable! I was just getting really upset, after all, I was very tired after the long journey … when they said they would drive us to another hotel where we could stay for two nights before returning to their hotel. Well, we were not exactly thrilled about unpacking, packing and then unpacking our suitcases within two days, but there was nothing that we could do about it. So we agreed to do so. On top of everything, the hotel they drove us to – by the way it was a long journey!! – was still a construction site, some parts of it weren’t even built. It was awful. We dropped our suitcases and went out. The next morning we heard the most terrible noise from outside our window. It was far from what you’d call a relaxing holiday. Well, to cut a long story short, after two days of beautiful sunshine on the “construction site”, it rained for the rest of our holiday.
